Thousands Of Cases Of Canned Dog Food Recalled Over Risky Vitamin Level

The latest dog food recall comes from Fromm Family Foods, though it doesnt have anything to do with the salmonella or aflatoxin that was behind numerous recalls earlier this year. This time around, the dog food is being recalled because it may have higher than expected levels of vitamin D, which could lead to health problems, including kidney troubles.

The recall covers around 5,500 cases of Fromms Four Star Shredded Entrée canned dog food, the announcement reveals. These cans were distributed to pet stores across the US theyre packaged in 12oz cans and feature the Best-By date 08/2024. Specific products covered by the recall include shredded turkey, pork, chicken, and beef.

The company is voluntarily recalling these cases of canned dog food after its analysis found potentially high levels of vitamin D. Dogs that consume too much of this vitamin may experience symptoms like weight loss, an increase in thirst, greater than usual drooling, and more. Very high levels of vitamin D could lead to serious health outcomes.

Anyone who purchased one of these recalled products should monitor their dog for symptoms and seek veterinary care if their dog displays any. Fortunately, the company hasnt received any reports of issues in dogs resulting from the canned food.

A Word About Boutique Dog Foods

If youve been following the news in the world of veterinary medicine, then you probably know about the FDAs concerns with boutique dog foods. The FDA seems to be sensing some kind of link between certain ingredients in these foods and dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs.

Right now, no brands have exactly been named.

Initially, people thought it was just about grain-free diets. However, Lisa Freeman has debunked that in her article on the Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association. According to her, the problem has a much broader scope not limited to grain-free diets, but BEG diets. BEG stands for Boutique companies, Exotic ingredients, or Grain-free diets.

Freeman explains that this link might have developed due to the use of lentils and chickpeas which serve as a replacement for grains in grain-free diets. However, its not limited to lentils and chickpeas. Freeman also writes that exotic meats, fruits, and vegetables might also be culpable.

So, what can a dog owner do?

Well, Freeman advises that you only buy from pet food companies that work with veterinary nutritionists and other such experts.

Researchers still have a lot of work to do by way of research. So, youll be wise to check with your vet if you have any concerns concerning your dogs diet.

Dog Food Is Being Recalled Due To Elevated Levels Of Vitamin D Which Can Be Dangerous

There is yet another recall that dog owners should have on their radar.

Fromm Family Foods is recalling about 5,500 cases of Fromm Shredded dog food, which is a relatively small recall considering the food was distributed nationwide. The recall was issued due to elevated levels of vitamin D. The notice, shared by the Food & Drug Administration , says that elevated vitamin D levels can have negative impacts on dogs of all sizes. The company discovered the problem during internal testing.

“Dogs ingesting elevated levels of vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss,” the notice states. “Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.” It is especially concerning considering most dogs have a fairly homogenous diet.

Here are the specific products under recall. All of the products were sold in 12-ounce cans with a best-by date of 08/2024.

What To Do If Your Dogs Food Is Recalled

If your dogs food has been recalled, stop feeding the food immediately. The food should be returned to the store where it was purchased, and you may be able to obtain a refund. Or, you may properly dispose of the food in a manner that prevents other animals from gaining access to it.

If your dog has already been eating the recalled food, consult with your veterinarian to determine what actions, if any, you should take. Even if your dog is not showing any signs of illness, its best to consult with your veterinarian as quickly as possible. Depending upon the reason the food was recalled, your veterinarian will be able to determine what, if any, action should be taken.

If you believe your dog has become ill or has died because of eating a recalled food product, you should file a complaint with the FDA. You can file a report online or contact the FDA consumer complaint coordinator in your state.

If you can no longer feed your dog his usual diet due to a recall, try to find a similar food to replace it or ask your veterinarian for suggestions. Keep in mind that sudden changes in diet can lead to dietary distress for dogs.
