Pet Food Recalled After At Least 28 Dogs Die 8 Sick In Us

Dog food recall

SILVER SPRING, Md. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled pet food products which led to at least 28 deaths and eight illnesses in dogs that ate the recalled product.

The recalled lots of food contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. Its a toxin produced by mold grown on corn and other grains.

The list of dry pet food products to be recalled by Midwestern Pet Food, Inc. on December 30, 2020 is:

If youre having trouble viewing the list on a mobile device, .

The affected products were distributed to online retailers and stores nationwide within the United States, the FDA said.

NewsNation spoke to Dr. Douglas Kratt, the President of the American Veterinary Medical Association about the recall and picking food for your pets. Hes also a practicing veterinarian in Wisconsin. Watch the full interview in the player above.

Symptoms in pets can include:

  • Sluggishness
  • Jaundice
  • Diarrhea
  • In some cases, pets may suffer liver damage but not show any symptoms

The FDA alert said the case counts and scope of the recall may expand.

According to the FDA, pet owners should stop feeding their pets the food and consult their veterinarian, especially if the pet is showing signs of illness.

There is no evidence to suggest that pet owners who handle products containing aflatoxin are at risk of aflatoxin poisoning. However, pet owners should always wash their hands after handling pet food, the FDA said.

Purina Dog Chow Complete With Real Chicken

Its proudly tagged as having 23 vitamins and minerals as well as containing real chicken, so youd expect it to be a healthy chicken-based dish for your pup. But that would be wrong.

There is no chicken to be found within the first five ingredients. But wheres the chicken? Its in the 7th slot, after the corns and legume.

Well list down the first five ingredients here: Whole Grain Corn, Meat And Bone Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Beef Fat Naturally Preserved With Mixed-Tocopherols, Soybean Meal. Thats a significant amount of corn and soybean when put together.

We dont have a problem with corn. We recognize that corn contains nutrients and is not a filler. In most cases. However, for a recipe thats not formulated to target specific canine medical conditions, wed expect the corn to be merely a supporting ingredient and not the main one. Quality dog food should always contain more meat than carbohydrates.

The second thing weve noticed is that most of the meats are unnamed. Thats a red flag in dog food. While an unspecified meat ingredient will not harm your pup, its kind of worrying that you dont know whats going in your pets food. Itll even be more worrying if your pet turns out to be sensitive to the ingredient included.

Theres Meat And Bone Meal and Poultry By-Product Meal. What meat do these refer to? Pork, beef, chicken? What kind of poultry? Turkey or chicken?

Warning! These 10 Dog Foods Have Been Recalled (2020 ...

This dog food is billed as providing complete nutrition for adult pups and even includes an optimal content of omega fatty acids for shiny hair.

It also proudly boasts that it is made of the finest ingredients. Looking closely at the label, however, we see a different story.

The first ingredient of the meal is ground whole grain corn. The third ingredient is also corn while the fifth is soybean meal.

So in the first five slots, you get three corn and legume ingredients, which means that this is not a meat-based dish at all. Here, the meat acts as support only and not the other way around, and there are too many grains.

The second thing we dont like about this recipe is that it uses unrecognizable animal ingredients. Were talking about the meat and bone meal.

Meat meals are usually okay provided that the animal the meat comes from is named. For example, chicken meal or lamb meal. But meat and bone meal? Which animal meat was used? Is there more than one kind of animal? And then, which parts?

Lastly, while the brand says that the recipe does not contain artificial flavors or sugar, it does contain artificial colors. There are four we could see, and theyre listed midway in the list, having more volume than the added nutrients the food contains.

Problem Ingredients: Ground Whole Grain Corn, Meat And Bone Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Soybean Meal, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Wheat, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2, Yellow 5

The recall was issued after the brands’ manufacturer, Sunshine Mills, Inc., identified the presence of “potentially elevated levels of aflatoxin above the acceptable limit.” The FDA explains that “aflatoxin poisoning can also occur if a pet eats moldy corn, grains, peanuts, or other aflatoxin contaminated food . . . even if there is no visible mold on the pet food.”

In these cases, the FDA says aflatoxin exposure may lead to any of the following symptoms:

In Thursday’s announcement, Sunshine Mills stated that “no illnesses have been reported in association with these products to date.” They also suggest that pets should be seen by a veterinarian if they exhibit any of the above symptoms after consuming one of recalled dog foods.

Whats A Dog Food Recall Anyway

A product recall is a request from the manufacturer to discontinue use of a product after the discovery of safety issues or defects that might put the consumer at risk. When it comes to dog food, there are two types of recall:

  • An FDA-issued recall
  • A voluntary recall
  • When the FDA issues a recall, its typically in response to customer complaints or based on the discovery of a problem when testing the product. Anything from potential contamination with a dangerous pathogen to inconsistencies with product packaging can trigger an FDA recall.

A voluntary recall happens when the manufacturer itself initiates the process. The manufacturer might recall the product if it tests too low in a certain nutrient, or if a problem is discovered with one of the ingredients. A recall can also happen if theres a problem with the formulation, processing, or packing of the product.

Sometimes, a company issues a voluntary recall in anticipation of an FDA recall. Sometimes by taking early action, companies can reduce the negative impact of the recall on the brand.

We also want to alert readers to the fact that, in late June 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified Rachael Ray Nutrish as one of 16 pet food brands that may be linked to heart disease in dogs and cats. None of those 16 brands have been recalled as part of the agencys ongoing investigation, though.

Eight more varieties of canned dog food are being recalled for potentially toxic levels of vitamin D, Hill’s Pet Nutrition announced Wednesday.

The company voluntarily recalled 25 products for the same concern earlier this year.

The number of dog food affected now totals 33.

Pet food recalled after at least 28 dogs die: FDA

Several pet food products have been recalled after the death of at least 70 dogs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.

Three brands of Sportmix products for dogs and cats made by Midwestern Pet Foods may contain potentially fatal levels of the toxin aflatoxin, according to the FDA.

The FDA said it is aware of at least 70 deaths and 80 illnesses in dogs that ate the recalled pet food, adding that the count is approximate and may not reflect the total number of pets affected.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture tested multiple samples of the food and found “very high levels” of aflatoxin, which is produced by a mold that can grow on corn and other grains used in pet food, the FDA said.

Midwestern Pet Foods has committed to recalling nine lots of Sportmix products, the FDA said. The FDA and Missouri Department of Agriculture are working to determine if any others need to be recalled.

The lot code, which begins with the letters “Exp,” is located on the back of the bag.

As of Dec. 30, the recalled products are:

Why Do Vets Hate Blue Buffalo

Many vets dont like Blue Buffalo in large part because of extremely deceptive marketing practices, using a lot of guilt to imply that if you dont feed their food you hate your pet and are contributing to his/her early death. Blue Buffalo is claiming previous ignorance of these ingredients in their foods.

What Should You Do If Your Dog Food Gets Recalled

The first thing you should do is stop feeding the recalled food to your dog. Then read the details of the pet food recall to make sure your brand is exactly the variety being recalled. If it is, try to find another dog food with similar ingredients. That way youll avoid upsetting your dogs stomach .

After that, look out for symptoms of illness in your dog. If you notice any changes, you may want to schedule a checkup with your veterinarian. And that bag of recalled dog food? Take it back to the store. You should be able to get a full refund.

    Concerns About Boutique Dog Food

The FDA is looking into a possible link between DCM in dogs and ingredients found in certain boutique pet foods. Taurine deficiency is a frequent cause of DCM and is notable in certain breeds like golden retrievers. While the FDA havent named any brands yet, most involved are smaller, boutique companies like those in this list. In a recent article of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Lisa Freeman, DVM, Ph.D., DACVN, explains the issue is not just grain-free diets, but rather, BEG diets .

The apparent link between BEG diets and DCM may be due to ingredients used to replace grains in grain-free diets, such as lentils or chickpeas, but also may be due to other common ingredients commonly found in BEG diets, such as exotic meats, vegetables, and fruits, Freeman wrote.

Dr. Freeman recommends purchasing food from companies that employ veterinary nutritionists and other experts. Lake Harriet Veterinary Clinic in Minneapolis has also published a useful resource about taurine-deficient DCM, which you can read here.

Alpo Come & Get It Cookout Classics

ALPO is a known dog food brand that may look to many as a quality pet food. But as turns out, its not. Or at least, this particular recipe isnt.

This formulation does not start with meat. In fact, the first meat ingredient wont be found until the 3rd slot in the list. And the only other meat is in 6th place.

What starts off this food is ground yellow corn, meaning that corn has the most significant volume in the diet. Not only that, there are two more corn ingredients in the recipe and one legume.

Its a formulation that focuses more on carbohydrates rather than protein. It meets the AAFCO standard, yes, but does not really go much above it.

The second thing we dont like is the inclusion of artificial food coloring. Color is not a requirement in dog food, and dogs will be better off without it. The less artificial ingredients in dog food, the better.

The Come & Get It! Cookout Classics is the least of the worst dog foods in our list because it contains real and named meat ingredients.

Recall Info: None for this recipe, and the only recall for the ALPO brand happened way back in 2007 for possible melamine contamination.

Problem Ingredients: Ground yellow corn, corn germ meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6
