Dogs Should Stick To Dog Food
Don’t believe anyone who tells you that dogs can eat anything that humans eat, as there are several human foods that dogs absolutely shouldn’t have. Dogs and humans may be similar in some ways, but the nutrients their bodies need and how they react to people food can be very different! For example, many people benefit from a diet filled with garlic and onions however, dogs’ red blood cells can actually be destroyed from the smallest amounts, including powdered forms of garlic or onions. So while humans may get a boost for their immune system or reduced inflammation, dogs that get garlic in their system could develop anemia.
The overall health of pets is important. Just like humans, the healthiest dogs eat well-balanced meals and get plenty of exercise. When pet parents start feeding their dog people food, they are often creating an imbalance with their dog’s digestive system and overall wellness. This is especially dangerous with young dogs and puppies. One of the biggest dangers to feeding your dog or puppy human food is he may think all human food is up for grabs. Despite your best efforts to only feed your pup snacks on the “safe” human food list, chances are he won’t see the difference and may be more likely to try to get into a variety of foods, any one of which could be deadly. This may be a habit that’s difficult to break.

Why Choose Home Cooked Dog Food
Why do pet parents choose home cooking over prepared commercial pet foods, particularly when home cooking seems much more expensive and time-consuming?
There are many reasons why people choose to make home-cooked dog food for their pets, but a few of the most common include:
- Saving money if they have access to more affordable ingredients or if their dog has allergies, home cooking can be a cheaper feeding option.
- A distrust of commercial pet food companies is hardly surprising after repeated dog food contamination recalls over the past 15 years.
- A belief that home-cooked dog food is a healthier or more natural way for their dog to eat.
Whatever the reason you might have for considering home-cooked dog food recipes, know that it still requires a proper education in canine nutrition.
While the homemade approach can sometimes be healthier for pets, doing it incorrectly will actually be the opposite.

Herbs And Spices To Avoid For Dogs
Because medical measurements are typically calculated in kilograms, for easy reference 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds .
Allspice Since it contains eugenols, it should be avoided. Small quantities will likely cause no issue, such as in baked goods. Eugenols can cause a slight decrease in body temperature and an increase in pulse rate. When a dosage level of about 2.5 grams per 10 kg of body weight is ingested, vomiting can occur. Note: more toxic to cats!
Bay Leaf It contains eugenols and other essential oils that make it toxic to dogs. Ingestion can cause vomiting and diarrhea. If dogs consume large numbers of large leaves, intestinal obstruction is possible.
Cayenne Even though it is not toxic, it can cause significant irritation to your dogs nose, eyes, and throat. If swallowed, it can cause burning, irritation, and pain to the gastrointestinal tract and cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Cocoa or cocoa powder Highly toxic to dogs. It contains up to 26mg of theobromine per gram. Mild to moderate toxic effects can appear with ingestions as little as 20mg per kg of body weight or 9mg per pound of body weight. In powdered form, which is most toxic, effects can occur at as little as 0.14 ounces for a ten-pound dog. For more help, use this chocolate calculator. Toxicity results in vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, rapid heart rate, seizures, and even death.

Managing Dog Seasonal Allergies With Medication
One way to manage seasonal allergies in dogs is by using the allergy serum prescribed by your dog’s dermatologist. This requires a series of allergen injections that slowly increase in dose over time. The needle you’ll use is very small, but you can perform these injections at home with professional guidance.
Allergy injections tend to have low levels of side effects, which can make them a good option for dogs with moderate to severe allergies.
If your dog only has mild seasonal allergies, they may respond well to several over-the-counter and at-home remedies, such as antihistamines.
Oral prescription medications are another option. Anti-itch medicine that can work quickly and can be discontinued without negative side effects could be an option for your dog. There are even medications that modulates the immune system’s response to allergens. Both are available via prescription from your local veterinarian and require annual examinations and/or blood work.
Both of these types prescription medications have side effects, so be sure to talk with your vet about how taking them could impact your dog’s health. In general, it’s always a good idea to ask your vet before introducing anything new to your dog’s system especially with over-the-counter medicine so you can give your pet the option and dosage best for their unique needs.
My Dog Wont Eat Or Drink Water
If your dog wont eat or drink water, then you need to talk to your vet. Right away. It isnt normal for a dog to go more than a few hours without drinking or eating anything. If your dog is drinking a lot more water than usual and refusing to eat this can also be a sign of an infection or a serious disease.
Just like people, dogs get tummy bugs. When the are vomiting and/or have diarrhea their natural instinct will tell them to stop eating. These minor bugs are not usually serious and most dogs will carry on behaving normally throughout. And they will drink enough water to replace lost fluids.
Veterinary advice is to not feed your dog for about 12 hours after a tummy upset. Then start by feeding small amounts of bland food every few hours on the first day. This allows the digestive tract to recover. Increase the amount of food gradually and if it seems that the problem is solved you can start reintroducing normal food.
A lack of appetite accompanied by absence of bowel movements, or by straining, may indicate a bowel obstruction. So its off to the vet without delay! Obviously, you dont want to run to a vet with every little minor tummy upset, but your vet would always rather see a healthy dog unnecessarily, than a sick dog too late. Illness aside, the vast majority of dogs that go off their food are not in the throes of a medical emergency.
Many dogs that gradually stop eating do it because they want you to feed them different food. Lets have a look at this.

Which Brand Should You Try
People often ask us which brand of dog food they should try, especially when their dog is refusing several brands. We simply cannot advise you on which brand of food you should feed your dog. That is a matter for you, and possibly your vet, to decide in consultation with your wallet.
But be very wary of switching brands on more than one occasion. You can end up in a cycle of constantly switching from one food to another whilst your dog gets more and more picky.
Did Your Dog Just Have Surgery
It is not unusual for your dog to skip a meal or two after a surgery. The medications used for sedation and anesthesia commonly cause nausea and a decreased appetite, and medications that they may go home on, such as pain medications and/or antibiotics can also suppress the appetite.
You may try tempting your dog to eat with a spoonful of canned food or boneless, skinless, boiled chicken on top of their kibble. Better yet, ask your veterinarian for a few cans of a prescription gastrointestinal diet to feed for the first few days after surgery. These foods are highly palatable, are easily digestible, and can help counteract some of the gastrointestinal upset that can happen after surgery and anesthesia.
If your dog had oral or facial surgery, your veterinarian may recommend feeding only canned food for two or more weeks. This also means that your dog should not receive hard treats or chew on hard toys until they are declared healed at their recheck appointment. If your dog is refusing to eat the prescribed canned food, reach out to your veterinarian in case there are any post-operative complications.
