Bananas Are Safe For Dogs And High In Fiber

According to PetMD, it’s OK to serve your dog a slice or two of banana as a sweet treat, as the fruit is rich in fiber, potassium, and vitamins B6 and C.

Since bananas are high in sugar, you shouldn’t serve them to your pet too often. The peels can also be difficult for dogs to digest, so it’s best to slice and portion the pieces for them.

Can Dogs Eat Cheese

Since dogs are not able to easily digest milk, its recommended to not feed them cheese. Blue cheese is particularly dangerous as it contains roquefortine C, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea. If the case gets worse, your dog may experience tremors, seizures and a high temperature. Visit the vet immediately if you think your dog has eaten blue cheese. Cheese boards are popular at Christmas time so be careful to keep this out of reach from your dog who may be tempted to give it a try.

Foods To Help The Meds Go Down

Some dogs resist taking pills, especially if theyre big or smell bad. To make one go down easier, hide it in a tasty treat — like peanut butter or a marshmallow. Make pill time game time if they like to play catch. Toss them a few pieces of what you plan to hide their meds in, one after another, with the pill in one of them. They may swallow it without even knowing it was there. Ground beef and chicken are other good hiding places. If none of these works, it’s OK to use a slice of hot dog. Ask your vet for other ideas.

Although its not a great idea to give your dog a large amount of any human food, a small amount of watermelon, mango, or broccoli can be used as a yummy and healthy treat for your dog.

Watermelon can be an especially sweet and refreshing option on a hot summer day! Just remember that whenever you give your dog fruits or vegetables, its important to remove the seeds or pits, as they can be a choking hazard and in some cases toxic.

Heres a list of healthy fruits and veggies most dogs love:

  • Cantaloupe
  • Raw or undercooked meat and poultry are not safe for dogs or humans.
  • Bacon, deli meat, and other highly processed meats are not good for dogs.
  • Seasonings such as garlic powder, onion powder, and nutmeg are toxic to dogs, so remove any seasoned skin before feeding meat to your dog.

Natural Dog Food Is Nutritionally Superior

Sugars and carbohydrates are part of a balanced diet in humans. The question now comes to the source of those sugars and carbohydrates. Is it better to obtain them from processed sources such as junk foods and sodas, or from natural sources such as fruits and vegetables?

Without a doubt the majority of all humans on earth would say that they would rather go for the fruits and vegetables as their source of carbohydrates. So, why would humans assume different when it comes to feeding their canines? Processed dog food, whether dry kibble or canned dog food, is exactly that: processed, unnatural, less wholesome and incomplete.

While there has admittedly been few studies done in terms of coming up the definitive effects of a raw food diet in dogs, comparisons can be made with the effects of such a diet on humans. This is evident in the response of the human gut to such a diet. Gut health and the reduction of its inflammation is a primary effect of adopting a raw-natural food diet.

It has been observed that the consumption of refined sugars, usually originating from processed foods high in trans fats and fructose, increases inflammation in dogs and is a known contributor to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. In contrast, the consumption of omega-3 fats from natural sources such as salmon and sardines, natural fish oils, decreases inflammation in dogs’ gut drastically.

Although the cause is unknown, grapes and raisins are particularly bad for dogs as they are toxic to their system. If your pet has eaten raisins or grapes they can become unwell, showing signs of vomiting and diarrhoea eating large amounts can cause severe complications and lead to renal failure.

In particular, at Christmas time, dogs are more likely to be around food like Christmas cake and fruit loaf, which contains dried fruit. Be careful to ensure this kind of food is kept out of reach and guests do not feed your pet with their leftovers.

Can Dogs Eat Nuts And Seeds

Nuts and seeds are one of the trickier categories in terms of human food for dogs. Thats because some of them are wonderful, healthy treats that are great to give your pup, while others are toxic and can seriously risk the health of your furry friend.

Its a good idea to avoid giving your dog salted or seasoned nuts and seeds. Stick to plain, fresh nuts in small amounts. Peanuts can provide a great source of nutrition for dogs, but to avoid the possibility of your dog choking on a peanut shell, its best to stick to peanut butter or peanut-butter-containing treats, such as the Wet Noses Grain-Free Peanut Butter and Banana Treats.

Sunflower seeds are also safe and healthy for canines. As with all nuts and seeds, make sure you keep your dog away from shells, though, since these can be a choking hazard. Fruit seeds are typically also non-toxic, but fruit pits like the ones found in peaches, plums, and apricots should never be given to dogs.

Providing good nutrition is a proactive way to help your dog maintain a strong immune system. Its certainly no guarantee he or she will not get cancer, but it helps in the fight. And maintaining good nutrition while a dog is fighting cancer will help in the battle against the disease.

We found this article by Simi that might help you in deciding to broaden your dogs diet, and what youd be comfortable adding. As with everything The Puppy Up Foundation publishes, we encourage you to do your own research and draw your own conclusions. Every dogs digestive system is different, and different dogs will respond differently to each item below. Keep your dog healthy and fit with this easy peasy homemade recipe its cheaper than store-bought and chockfull of fresh veggies!

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So thats what we did we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

Thats when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food just like making anything at home is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.

But its important to note that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size, such as:

  • High-quality protein
  • Fat
  • Calcium
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Now this recipe here has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies and 25% grains, but the ratios can easily be adjusted to suit your pups breed and/or needs.

We know it’s best to avoid feeding man’s best friend table scraps, but sometimes those puppy-dog eyes get the best of us and we can’t resist slipping them a treat from our plates. As a general rule of thumb, no more than 10 percent of your dogs diet should consist of treats including human food.

Just because a food is good for us doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe for dogs. Keep in mind that every dog is different, so try any new food in small amounts, and if your dog has a reaction, consult a veterinarian. The consequences of feeding your dog the wrong food can range from loss of appetite to heart damage or even death.

Here’s a list of dog-approved people foods, as well as several items you should never share with your canine companion.
