Why Do Vets Hate Blue Buffalo
Many vets dont like Blue Buffalo in large part because of extremely deceptive marketing practices, using a lot of guilt to imply that if you dont feed their food you hate your pet and are contributing to his/her early death. Blue Buffalo is claiming previous ignorance of these ingredients in their foods.
Search For The Cause Of The Illnesses
Unable to locate the source of the kidney failure exhibited by test subjects that consumed some of their wet food products, Menu Foods sent food samples to Cornell University between 13 March and 15 March for chemical analysis. They too, were not immediately able to pinpoint the cause of the sicknesses, so they sent samples to the New York State Food Laboratory, a part of the federally funded Food Emergency Response Network.
Our Picks For Budget Dog Food:
There’s a lot of buzz about grain-free diets, but it’s important to know that they’re not necessarily better for your dog. If your dog happens to be allergic to or intolerant of certain grains, then a grain-free food might be helpful.
And FYI, these foods aren’t carbohydrate-free. Instead, the carbs in grain-free dog foods come from non-grain sources like white potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, lentils, chickpeas, soybeans, and tapioca.
Also, it’s key to talk to your veterinarian before switching your dog to a grain-free diet. The FDA continues to investigate a potential link between dogs fed grain-free diets and the development of a heart condition called non-hereditary dilated cardiomyopathy, which can be fatal in a matter of months, according to Richardson. Because of this, some vets are strongly opposed to grain-free diets in general. They believe the risks of feeding a grain-free diet simply outweigh any potential reward. In a study published in the journal “Scientific Reports” in August 2021, researchers at Tufts University found that peas are a common ingredient in the DCM-associated foods they examined, but research is ongoing and conclusions can not be drawn at this time.

Is A Raw Diet Good For My Dog
Insider Reviews spoke to veterinarians who said that even though there are some reported benefits of raw diets, they’re just too risky. They put pets at risk of nutritional deficiencies, bacterial infections, and possibly even injuries from bones in the food. Plus, there are risks to humans. Those who are immunocompromised, elderly people, and young children are at risk of bacterial infections if they live in a household where a dog is fed a raw diet. If you want to learn more, you can check out the statements from the FDA and CDC on the health and safety risks of raw dog foods.
Prevention Of Illness In Pets
As of 4 May, the FDA advised: “If your pet food is not listed , the pet food is not affected by the recall and you can continue to feed it to your pets however, if your pet exhibits a sudden onset of symptoms including loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, stop feeding the pet food and contact your veterinarian.”
The growing number of recalls has motivated at least one well-known animal protection organization, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to recommend “until this crisis is resolved … pets be fed products containing U. S.-sourced protein supplements only.”

2 There Are Over 60 Brands Named In The Report Not Just 16
The mainstream media confusedly began reporting headlines such as These 16 pet food brands are linked to heart disease. While these 16 brands had the most reports, there are many more brands also linked. Other common brands named more than once include Purina, Canidae, Iams, Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, Halo, Wellness Core, and many more. Frustratingly though, the FDA only called out brands and not the specific formula of the food. Often times the exact formula isnt mentioned, only the brand.
Also, while the majority of reports are from grain-free foods using legumes instead of grains, there are still some grain based foods in the reports. Some have speculated that since the 2018 announcement that the FDA was investigating a link with grain free caused both owners and veterinarians to disproportionately report incidents involving grain-free foods.

Alpo Come & Get It Cookout Classics
ALPO is a known dog food brand that may look to many as a quality pet food. But as turns out, its not. Or at least, this particular recipe isnt.
This formulation does not start with meat. In fact, the first meat ingredient wont be found until the 3rd slot in the list. And the only other meat is in 6th place.
What starts off this food is ground yellow corn, meaning that corn has the most significant volume in the diet. Not only that, there are two more corn ingredients in the recipe and one legume.
Its a formulation that focuses more on carbohydrates rather than protein. It meets the AAFCO standard, yes, but does not really go much above it.
The second thing we dont like is the inclusion of artificial food coloring. Color is not a requirement in dog food, and dogs will be better off without it. The less artificial ingredients in dog food, the better.
The Come & Get It! Cookout Classics is the least of the worst dog foods in our list because it contains real and named meat ingredients.
Recall Info: None for this recipe, and the only recall for the ALPO brand happened way back in 2007 for possible melamine contamination.
Problem Ingredients: Ground yellow corn, corn germ meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6
Carbohydrate Effects On Taurine And Heart Function
As you can imagine, the fact that diets rich in specific carbohydrate, when used to replace grains, are resulting in heart failure is a big deal and there has been a push to try and understand why this problem develops, and how it differs from normal dilated cardiomyopathy.
This study looked at ultrasound examination of dogs with DCM, and compared the features of their disease based on the diet they were being fed.
This significant conclusion was that in those dogs fed a grain-free diet, the disease can improve with nutritional management, including diet change
So, for those dogs being fed an at-risk diet, changing their diet may be able to significantly reverse their heart changes.
A more recent 2020 study looked to see if a grain-free diet containing peas, potato, and tapioca resulted in different taurine levels in otherwise healthy dogs.
The conclusion was that overall taurine status was not affected by dietary treatments.
There is still a long way to go when it comes to understanding this diet-related disease.

Vague titles like animal, meat, or poultry dont tell you much about the health value of the food, which is especially dangerous for dogs with allergies.
- Free of any artificial flavors, preservatives, or pesticides.
- Made without fillers like corn, wheat, and soy these offer minimal nutrition and may cause digestive issues.

Initial Efforts Focus On Aminopterin
On 23 March, the New York State Food Laboratory reported that aminopterin was found in samples sent to them by Cornell.Michigan State University also investigated the source of the kidney failure and made available to researchers and veterinarians pictures and photographs of affected animal kidneys “demonstrating acute tubular necrosis in the kidney with intratubular crystals.” Aminopterin was widely described in news reports as a “rat poison“, though that assertion may be based upon a hypothetical use listed in the 1951 patent application and not upon the actual use of the chemical.Aminopterin is illegal in China, and neither Cornell University nor the FDA could replicate the New York lab’s results. On 27 March, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reported the symptoms described in affected animals are not “fully consistent with the ingestion of rat poison containing aminopterin.”
Industry And Government Response

The popular pet food brand has been linked to more than 130 dog deaths and may have caused hundreds more to fall ill after multiple violations and recalls, the Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday.
The FDA sent a warning letter on Aug. 9 to Evansville, Indiana-based Midwestern Pet Foods, noting that the branded dog food could be responsible for at least 220 sick dogs.
The FDA is dedicated to taking all steps possible to help pet owners have confidence that the food they buy for their animal companions is safe and wholesome, Steven Solomon, director of the FDAs Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a Tuesday statement. We are issuing this corporate-wide warning letter because inspections of Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.s manufacturing plants revealed evidence of violations, which were shared across multiple plants and were associated with the illness or death of hundreds of pets who had eaten the companys dry dog food.
At high levels, the agency said, aflatoxins can cause illness and death in pets. Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include sluggishness, loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting.

What Makes Vitamin D Dangerous
Some vitamins are water soluble, meaning they are dissolved in water and ware absorbed into tissues for immediate use. Very Well Health says that if these vitamins are present in excess in the body, they are excreted in urine. This means that they need to be replenished regularly, and rarely rise to toxic levels. Water soluble vitamins include B vitamins and vitamin C.
In contrast, some vitamins, like vitamin D, are fat soluble. This means that they are not excreted through the urine, and are absorbed by fat globules and distributed through the body in the bloodstream. Because they are stored in the liver and fatty tissues, they can accumulate to toxic levels.
Unfortunately, such was the case for some dogs who ate affected kinds of Prescription Diet and Science Diet canned dog food, according to some customers.
