Puppy Feeding Schedule: Look At The Chart Follow The Tips

How To Feed A Dog Or Puppy Correctly

Creating a healthy puppy feeding schedule is not only about nutrition. Im a dog trainer, so I must tell you that food will be your number one communication tool with your pup. Use it wisely! How many times a day should I feed my dog? That is your question.

Its not only about how many times, its about how to feed your puppy too. When your puppy is between 2 to 4 months of age, he is going through his socialization period. This means that you have roughly 4-6 weeks to teach him important things about the human world! Using part of your puppys daily meal is a great way to do this and prevent overfeeding. While your puppy keeps growing, its important to teach him basic manners, potty training, how to stay home alone and how to stay calm with visitors, among other things. Below you will find a puppy feeding chart by weight as well as how many times your puppy should eat depending on his age. Follow this chart to know the amount of food your puppy requires, then use the tips below to use some of that food to raise a well-mannered dog. Lets get on with feeding and training!

What Is Wet Dog Food

The fundamental difference between wet and dry food is the water content. Dry food has a moisture content of between 3 – 12%, while wet food is between 60 – 84% moisture.

Wet foods are either canned or sealed in pouches, while dry foods usually come packaged in big waxed paper bags or packaged in cardboard boxes.

Whilst dry food brings many advantages in terms of ease of storage, price and cleanliness, wet dog food can be a good choice for puppies with poor appetites as the smell and texture is more likely to appeal.

Should I Feed My 8 Week Old Puppy Wet Food

At 8 weeks old you can start feeding your pup wet dog food. Your puppy still has soft teeth, which can make wet food a better choice. Pups at this stage are finally transitioning from their mothers milk to solid food and wet dog food is perfect for this, as dogs often find it more palatable and easier to eat.

After this, once your puppys teeth have started to strengthen and harden, you can make the swap from wet to dry food, if you wish. When doing so, it can be helpful to soften the kibble by moistening it with water before feeding it to your puppy. Its also best to make the transition slowly, ideally over a 10-day period: dogs stomachs are sensitive and can suffer from sudden dietary changes.

There is some debate over whether dry kibble is better for good dog dental health. Some argue that the crunch is essential for developing strong and healthy teeth. Others, however, claim that the fact that dry food stays stuck to their teeth can create decay and other problems.

Once youre past the weaning stage, it really is down to personal choice both yours and your pups!

Switching From Puppy To Adult Food Twice A Day

When is the right time to change your pooch from puppy kibble to adult food? Puppy food is full of extra nutrients and calories to meet your puppys growing needs. But as they mature, they need less of the rich stuff.

Handy Hint: Heres the age at which puppies will start to eat solid food and drink water instead of their mothers milk.

Its essential you dont switch your puppy too soon to adult food. Its also just as important you dont keep them on puppy food for too long. This could lead to obesity and other health issues.

Smaller dog breeds mature quicker than larger dog breeds. So, if your little Dachshund is 7 to 10 months old, you can start switching them to adult food.

Large breed dogs should reach 80 pounds before you start switching them to adult food. This can be anywhere between 12 and 16 months.

The switch over from puppy food to adult food should be done gradually. By introducing adult food to your puppys diet over one to two weeks, theyll adjust better and cope with the change with less stress. The gradual process might also help you deal with any problematic begging behavior. If it doesnt heres how to stop your dog begging and barking when you eat.

Once again, follow the feeding guidelines on the dog food package or can to ensure your puppy is getting the right quantities. You can also speak to your vet if youre still unsure about how much to feed your puppy when you move to adult formula.

How Do You Get This Mushy Consistency

When Should I Start Feeding My Puppy Like An Adult

Well, its a combination of dry dog food and liquid. We suggest letting the liquid soak into the kibble, then, mash it with a spoon to get the ideal consistency our bamboo sporks do just the trick.

The amount of water to dry food ratio changes week-to-week. But weve outlined the exact measurements you need for the 4-week weaning stage. And if thats not enough, weve included our very own Beco feeding guide, for puppies of all shapes and sizes.

  • Week 1: one part dry dog food, three parts liquid.
  • Week 2: two parts dry dog food, two parts liquid.
  • Week 3: three parts dry dog food, one part liquid.
  • Week 4: your pup should be ready to eat dry dog food.

Puppies tummies can be temperamental. Remember, theyre a lot smaller than normal dogs despite their appetite suggesting otherwise. Where youd feed a regular-sized dog substantial meals maybe once or twice a day, we recommend feeding puppies smaller but more frequent meals three to four times a day. Its also always a safe bet to look for sensitive stomach puppy food.

If your puppy seems to be struggling with the transition from liquid to dry food, we advise slowing down the weaning process. No puppy is the same, so dont worry if yours is taking a little longer than expected.

How To Change From Puppy To Adult Food

For dogs of all ages, they should have a balanced, decent, and natural diet that suits them no matter how old they are. Its fine to concentrate much on your puppy or adult diet as stated by the pet food industry. But we suggest you feed your dogs a good-quality, balanced, organic, and even homemade diet without caring much about the age.

If its the homemade diet, lets give your dogs more nutrients they need in the form of vitamin supplement. This offers them the great longevity and health benefits that can last a long time. Make sure to check with your veterinarian for help in deciding if anything further is needed.

To make your dogs dietary switch as easy as possible, heres our basic guide:

  • On the first day, you can fill the dogs food bowl with 75% puppy food and only 25% adult dog food. Next day, lower the amount of puppy food to 50% while increasing the adult food to 50%. On the third day, offer the dog with around 25% puppy food but 75% adult food. For the last day, you can fill its bowl with 100% adult food without needing to mix with any puppy food.
  • When the puppy doesnt appear to be ready for the new adult food, just switch its formula type. For example, you can change from chicken to lamb. But avoid returning to its puppy diet before.

Why Is Diet So Important

Diet also plays a big part when it comes to your dogs weight, and with the right exercise, diet can go a long way towards helping your dog stay in perfect shape. Being overweight or obese is harmful to your dogs wellbeing, as it can stop them from being as active as they need to be and put them at risk of certain, serious health conditions.

At The End Of 2019 During Our Yearly Vet Check We Received The Horrible News That Our Dog Was In Stage 4 Kidney Failure

Honestly, I was in total shock, how did we miss this?! He is with me all day, every day!! He just seemed like he was dealing with some symptoms of old age frequent urination, sometimes excessive water drinking, and I would notice occasionally that he would have a mild case of diarrhea. It definitely didnt feel like life threatening symptoms to us! As much as the diagnosis was a shock, the price tag of the prescription diet that we were told he would need to eat for the remainder of his life was pretty horrifying too! When I asked our vet how long we had left with him the prognosis wasn’t good, 3-6 months maybe 9 if we were lucky. We had to wait 6 weeks for a follow up blood panel to really know what kind of timeline we were looking at.

The Benefits Of Feeding Premium Food

Why move your grown-up pup to a premium adult dog food? Because quality counts. It’s crucial to continue his superb puppy nutrition into adulthood. Downgrading to a lower-quality brand at this stage of his life may upset his digestive system, and won’t provide him with the same level of nutritional excellence he was raised on.

Think of a baby. When it’s time to start giving him solid food, you wouldn’t dream of feeding your child anything less than the best nutrition you can buy. The same is true for your maturing puppy. He needs the best age-appropriate food there is to help maintain his overall health.

Premium foods, such as IAMS, are specifically designed to provide your dog with a food that has:

  • High-quality ingredients
  • Clear, bright eyes
  • Small, firm stools

Founded on more than 60 years of research into canine nutrition, premium formulas from IAMS help maintain your dog’s health and provide him with the nutrition he needs for a long life. Basic brands may not provide these benefits or match the level of expertise that goes into every bag of dog food from IAMS.

Keep your dog healthy and fit with this easy peasy homemade recipe its cheaper than store-bought and chockfull of fresh veggies!

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So thats what we did we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

Thats when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food just like making anything at home is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.

But its important to note that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size, such as:

  • High-quality protein
  • Fat
  • Calcium
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Now this recipe here has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies and 25% grains, but the ratios can easily be adjusted to suit your pups breed and/or needs.
