Thoughts About The First 5 Ingredients
Overall, the first five ingredients in this food show a lot of grain but they also look like they provide lots of protein. For the purposes of a dog food for sensitive skin, these first few ingredients look like they probably provide plenty of protein and fat, along with some of the Omega-6 and Omega-3 the food claims it includes. If your dog is not allergic to corn or other grains, the food looks like it could be helpful.

Before you start searching for a better food for your dog, you need to figure out what is causing your dogs sensitive stomach. Once you have ruled out serious conditions like stomach cancer, it is time to examine the other possible causes of sensitive stomachs in dogs. There are a wide variety of food items that certain dogs have trouble tolerating. Other dogs are sensitive to certain proteins. Another possibility is that your dogs food is lacking something, like sufficient fiber, vitamins, and minerals, or contains too much of something, like fat. Your dogs food might not even be the problem. If your dog has a habit of getting into the trash or eats a lot of treats and table scraps, then it could be something else causing his upset tummy.

Home Cooked Meals For Dogs With Sensitive Stomachs
Some dogs benefit from bland meals prepared at home. A simple dinner of cooked chicken and rice, without any seasoning, might help settle an upset stomach and diarrhea. These days, an increasing number of dog owners are turning to homemade diets for all of their dogs meals. This can be an excellent option for dogs with sensitive stomachs, as long as owners make sure they meet all of their pets nutritional needs. An easy way to do this is to check with your veterinarian to make sure the foods you are feeding your dog contain appropriate amounts of necessary nutrients. Another option is to use a website like balance IT®, created by Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist Sean J. Delaney, DVM, MS, DACVN, to help vets and owners balance the nutrition in their pets homemade meals.

Hills Science Diet provides more individualized foods for dogs with different health conditions and life stages than any other brand that comes to mind. If your dog has any kind of health issue, regardless of his age or condition, its very possible that Science Diet has a food for him, or your vet can prescribe one of their Prescription Diets for him. Their Prescription Diets are costly and even their regular foods are expensive. Many people question whether these are good foods when they look at the ingredients, but dogs who eat these foods seem to do well.
What Should I Look For In Sensitive Stomach Dog Food
While it is best to consult a veterinary nutritionist, pet parents can do their own research to decide on a good brand that makes food for sensitive stomachs. Your vet might place your dog on a limited ingredient diet or a prescription diet depending on their problems. However, it is still advised to reach the label of the product.
The most common factors that one needs to consider in a sensitive stomach diet include
- Low Fat and Carbs. If your dog food contains low amounts of fat and carbs, then you can consider using that brand of dog food. This will prevent unnecessary weight gain and keep your dogs GI tract functioning well.
- Probiotics and Prebiotics. Probiotics and prebiotics help improve the quality of gut flora. These are beneficial bacteria that help with digestion.
- Single Protein Source. Often, a single source of protein can reduce the chance of an allergic reaction in most dogs. Make sure that the protein is present without any meat by-products.

Additional Ingredients Of Interest
Aside from the top five ingredients, there are several other notable ingredients found in Hills Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach & Skin Dog Food. Some of these ingredients include: pork fat, soybean oil, chicken liver flavor, dried beet pulp, flaxseed, and various vitamins and minerals plus a vegetable and fruit blend. Pork fat is used in the food and we dont have a problem with it. Its a named source of fat. Dogs love pork and pork fat. . This food contains soybean oil and it has many of the same issues as flaxseed . Soybeans are a good source of protein and fat and they are low in carbs but they are a common cause of allergies in dogs. They are also a source of phytoestrogens which can interfere with your dogs hormones to a certain extent.
We also see chicken liver flavor in the food. Added flavors always raise a few eyebrows, but since this is a named source, it looks fine. However, the food also contains Natural Flavors which is not fine. Natural flavors in dog food could be almost anything approved by the FDA as GRAS . It is frequently monosodium glutamate the same MSG that is added to human foods for flavor and color. Your dog doesnt need MSG unless you are trying to discourage him from eating his own poop .
