Verified Review: User Experience

One of the customer reviews that we have found, Maddie, spoke about her beloved Goldens struggle with having diarrhea for months. Maddie had put her dog on a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and was in and out of the Vets office, unable to resolve her GI upset. Maddies golden became lethargic over time and would sleep all day. She said on the last visit that she had almost reached a sum of over 600 dollars. Her Veterinarian had recommended Hills Sensitive Stomach and Skin diet, and within days of starting it, her stool became firm. She was back to her bright and happy Golen self. Maddie wrote, I will keep her on only Hills Diets. For now, it will save me the hefty Vet bills.

Hills Science Diet Adult Perfect Digestion is nonprescription dog food, that customers rave about. This customer said in their review that they had a year old Goldendoodle who had recurrent loose stool and occasional episodes of vomiting bile. After bringing her to the Veterinarian for a whole workup, to find there was nothing wrong with her dog.

Best Budget Friendly Diet: Hills Science Diet Adult Perfect Digestion Salmon Dry Dog Food

Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin Cat Food | Chewy

Like the sensitive stomach and skin diet, this Hills science diet is not a prescription food, which means its less costly than most of the previously listed diets for sensitive stomachs. In theory, its in the same price range as the sensitive skin diet. It deserves the most budget-friendly diet for all of its added value. This diet contains high-quality salmon and ingredients that will assist gut health and normal stool production.

To help form stool, it contains prebiotics, whole grain oats, and pumpkin. Hills Perfect Digestion dry food contains Vitamin C to help boost your pets energy and immune system. The antioxidant is also great for reducing inflammation. Vitamin E is in this food as well. Hills said that when wild-caught salmon is accessible, they use that in the food as the primary protein source. There are still chicken products in the ingredients. To be safe, you might want to steer clear of this product for pets with chicken food sensitivity.

You might wonder why this food is not the best overall diet due to its ingredients and affordability? Its a new product. This food has only been on the market for a little over a year. Customers have left great reviews on this product, but it hasnt been out as long as some other diets. When reviewing food, its helpful to see if a veterinarian suggests it. There are just client reviews, and most of them have discovered it on their own. So far, though, all of the reviews have been great!

Recommended Reading: How Much Homemade Dog Food Should I Feed My Dog

Recommended Serving Amounts For Homemade Dog Food

As a general rule, dogs will eat around 2 to 3 percent of their ideal body weight in fresh food daily. Larger breeds may need as little as 1 1/2 percent, and smaller breeds may need as much as 4 percent.

This works out to be approximately:

  • 2 pounds of food per day for a 100-pound dog
  • 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of food per day for a 50-pound dog
  • 1/2 to 3/4 pound of food per day for a 25-pound dog
  • 5 to 6 1/2 ounces of food per day for a 10-pound dog

There is much variation in what the ideal amount should be as it depends on how much your dog weighs and how active she is.

I feel that the best approach is to feed and watch if your dog is losing weight, give more, and if your dog is gaining weight, give less.

For our pugs, we feed a scoop each in the morning and a scoop each in the evening, plus all their supplements.

We have an easy system for this: homemade food is refrigerated in a sealed container with a measuring cup , and all the supplements are lined up together in a cupboard in the kitchen. Keeping your ingredients organized and accessible will make feeding time fast and smooth.

Compared to feeding commercial food, where you might scoop out kibbles or open up a can, feeding homemade food with all the supplements takes maybe 10 seconds more. And even if it took 10 minutes more, fresh wholesome food for our furbabies is worth it.

The Answer: Prescription Diets Revealed

Now, if theres one thing I can say about my veterinary friends, its that they dont follow direction very well! Only one of the vets actually ranked all of the foods as asked.

But the rest had some very interesting things to say about the prescription diet.

So to start, here are the rankings in order from best to worst from Dr Marty Goldstein, author of The Nature of Animal Healing:

Food #2 ranked first because it contains all whole foods

Food #4 ranked second because it contains meal but otherwise contains whole foods

Food #1 ranked third, thanks to the by-product rice, by-product meal and overall low quality ingredients

Food #3 ranked last, based on the use of corn for its first ingredient, followed by by-product meal.

And if you havent guessed already, the prescription diet in that list is Food #3.

Want to hear what some of the other vets had to say about the prescription diet?

Dr Jodie Gruenstern: This food was the lowest quality in the list. It contains GMO corn, soy , which is a common allergen, synthetic vitamins/minerals, shavings , natural flavors, which usually mean MSG.

Dr Jean Dodds: Poor quality food: the first ingredients are corn, which is often GMO, and chicken by-product meal rather than whole chicken. Flax and soy are phytoestrogens.

Dr Peter Dobias: The worst recipe first ingredient is corn, then by-product, then flavors, wood chips. It may not be supermarket food but a veterinary diet right?!

Ironically, they thought many of them would be harmful.

Is Fresh Food Right For My Dog

While fresh foods for dogs may be the way to go for some pups, there are cases when fresh isnt the right call, including:

  • If your dog has a medical issue, they may need a prescription diet thats unavailable in fresh form.
  • If your dog is allergic to an ingredient in fresh food, that reaction is likely to outweigh the benefits of fresh food.

Pet parents should also consider their own lifestyle factors:

  • Can you afford to buy fresh food?
  • Are you able to store the food at a frozen or refrigerated temperature to ensure it doesnt spoil?

Remember: Every dog is unique. Before making any significant change to your pets diet, its important to talk to your veterinarian, who can provide the best advice based on your pets individual health profile.
