Has Rachael Ray Nutrish Ever Been Recalled
Yes, Rachael Ray Nutrish was recalled in 2015. The recall included five varieties of wet cat food which contained elevated levels of vitamin D. Eleven reports of illness were associated with the recalled products.
Although vitamin D is an important part of a cat’s diet, excessive amounts could cause serious problems. symptoms of excessive vitamin D include vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, increase urination, muscle tremors, and seizures.
Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is the company that owns Rachael Ray Nutrish. Here is the company’s explanation for why the recalled pet food contained excessive levels of vitamin D.
After conducting a number of product tests, Ainsworth confirmed that the affected products have elevated levels of vitamin D. The high levels result from the natural levels of vitamin D that are found in some of the fish ingredients that were used in these specific formulas.
Basically, they believe the problem stems from high levels of vitamin D in fish ingredients. Although the company did mention that they would reformulate the recalled varieties of cat food, they did not provide any specific procedural changes in manufacturing.
Ideally, consumers would like to know if Ainsworth Pet Nutrition will begin checking vitamin D levels in raw ingredients before putting them in Nutrish cat foods moving forward.

- AmazonKitty Favorite! We recently switched from Purina One to Rachael Ray Nutrish Super Premium Dry Cat Food and our three kitties love us for it. We did the blind taste test with two bowls side by side with each cat food and all three fought to eat out of the same one the one with Rachael Ray Nutrish Super Premium Dry Cat Food in it. To say we are pleased is an understatement. It is more cost-effective and not only are our kitties loving the new food choice, but it seems to fill them up more so they are eating less.Read more reviews of this product here.
- ChewyGreat product! I have had my clan on this for about a year. Of course we get a different flavor every month. But their coats look great. Dandruff at a bare minimum. They love this food. I used to use Purina Complete and they always had poop/diarrhea issues. Now their stools are fine, no more vomiting or dull fur. They also seem more active. I have age range from 3 months to 9 years all doing great on this!Check out similar reviews here.

Pea Starch Pea Flour & Pea Protein
Pea starch, pea flour, and pea protein should only be a supplementary protein source for your dog, not their primary protein source.
While peas are high in protein, canines cant digest them the same way they can digest meat and will not get maximum nutrient value from these protein sources.
That said, they are a great addition to bolster the protein content in peak performance diets where dogs need a bit of extra energy.
One recipe containing pea is the Rachael Ray Nutrish Natural Beef, Pea, & Brown Rice Recipe, with a rating of 4 and a daily feeding cost of $0.65.
Rachael Ray Nutrish Zero Grain
Zero Grains formulas from Rachael Ray use meat first recipes that exclude any grains or gluten. This product line features 4 dry dog food recipes based on chicken, turkey, salmon, or beef.
All recipes in the Zero Grain line up have no corn, wheat, soy, or gluten. Instead, grain-free Nutrish recipes use wholesome vegetables like sweet potatoes as an alternative source of digestible carbohydrates. Peas and tapioca provide additional gluten-free carbohydrate sources.
These formulas have a moderate protein content suitable for a wide range of dogs. The moderate fat content from flaxseed and animal fats is also ideal for most dogs.
Protein from U.S. farm-raised animals offers excellent digestibility for enhanced nutrient absorption compared to plant-based ingredients. But like some other grain-free formulas, the high volumes of peas and potatoes in this recipe are not ideal for dogs with heart conditions.
Rachael Ray dog food reviews share that this product can help manage the adverse reactions associated with grain sensitivities. But not all picky dogs find the flavor appealing.

Rachael Ray Nutrish Dog Food Verdict
The Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food brand is advertised as being super-premium and all-natural, but you cant always believe everything you read from the brands website. There is no doubt that Nutrish contains quality ingredients like real meat and veggies, but I wouldnt go so far as to label it super-premium.
While it is true that Nutrish uses natural ingredients, the quality of those ingredients is questionable, at least, when it comes to certain recipes. For example, ground corn is a common ingredient in several formulas although it doesnt provide any nutritional value to dogs. And it is still included even though almost all pet owners know that pet food manufacturers use corn as a filler to bulk up the calorie count.
The fact that Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food always has a high-quality named meat protein as the main ingredient improves the brands entire standing. Also, a wide variety of different meats present is the feature that sets Nutrish apart from the brands of similar quality.
On the other hand, Im not really impressed with the fats and oils which are used in Nutrish recipes. Almost all recipes feature chicken fat as the main source, with some other fat or oil further down the list to bulk up the fat levels and make the food more appealing. Compared to other premium brands and the types of fat they use, Nutrish is a bit disappointing.
With so many different and nutritious options you will definitely manage to find the food you approve of and your dog likes.
