2019 Heart Disease Investigation
We also want to alert readers to the fact that, in late , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration identified Rachael Ray Nutrish as one of 16 pet food brands that may be linked to heart disease in dogs and cats. None of those 16 brands have been recalled as part of the agencys ongoing investigation, though. Most, but not all, of the pet foods are grain-free and/or dry dog food formulations.
The FDA says this is a complex scientific issue that may involve multiple factors, and that it cannot even be certain that diet is a cause of the heart problems.
2018 Class-Action Lawsuit
In August 2018, a consumer filed a $5 million lawsuit against Ainsworth Pet Nutrition.
The lawsuit alleged that Nutrish contains an undisclosed dangerous herbicide called glyphosate, a potent biocide and endocrine disruptor, with detrimental health effects that are still becoming known.
The suit stated, Rachael Ray Nutrish holds itself out to the public as a trusted expert in the sourcing and processing of dog food, adding that the company also knew that contains glyphosate, an unnatural biocide.

As reported by Fortune, in 2018, a man accused Rachael Ray of making misleading claims by calling her dog food brand, Nutrish, natural. They claimed that products from the brand contained a potentially harmful ingredient called herbicide glyphosate. A proposed class action alleges Rachel Ray Nutrish-brand Zero Grain dog food is harmful to dogs in that the product is deficient of taurine and contains legume-based protein, a combination linked to a potentially fatal heart condition when used in grain-free foods.
The plaintiff, a Los Angeles resident, claims consumers would not have bought the premium-priced dog food, sometimes paying up to double what competitors charge for similar products, absent the defendants deceptive and misleading representations.
In other words, Plaintiff and the Class were actually paying more for less healthy foods, the lawsuit says.

If you have been following some of my food posts, you may have heard me talk about how I am trying to make more of our food from all natural ingredients and trying to eat a little healthier. But just because we are eating healthier, doesnt mean we have to eat bland, boring meals. I love making nutritious meals that are good for my family, yet taste amazing.
So when I recently read a recipe for Rachael Rays homemade teriyaki sauce, I was so excited to try it! It was really easy to put together , and had an amazing flavor that turned my healthy meal of brown rice and chicken breast into something truly gourmet!
To prepare I simply mixed all of the ingredients and brought them to a low boil for 15 minutes, stirring constantly.
I wish that you all could have been in my kitchen as I was doing this, because the smell was indescribable! The mix of ginger and garlic had this heavenly scent that reminded me of a really authentic Chinese Restaurant, or walking down the streets of China Town in San Francisco.
I had reserved a small bowl of the Teriyaki sauce to use to drizzle over the top of the finished meal, and Im glad that I did, as it was the perfect way to add a final touch of flavor to the dish.

Despite what this lawsuit claims, we would never use ingredients in our products that harm pets. The pesticide mentioned in the lawsuit, glyphosate, is commonly used by farmers but is obviously never added as an ingredient in our products, Modi said. All our products meet or exceed federal food safety requirements. We plan to aggressively defend ourselves against this misleading lawsuit and hope it does not cause pet parents any additional unnecessary concern.
