Purina One does not use any artificial food coloring dyes. According to our records, none of the 40 Purina One dog foods contain artificial food dyes.
Artificial food coloring dyes are unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients. In general, we not not recommend feeding any pet foods that contain artificial dyes.
In 2010, the CSPI raised serious concerns regarding the safety of many artificial dyes. Most of the studies referenced by the CSPI involved prolonged or excessive consumption. Since most dogs consume the same foods throughout their lives, concerns raised by the CSPI are alarming to say the least.

Making The Switch To Purina One
Although youll be anxious to see the difference Purina ONE can make in your puppy, please allow 7 – 10 days to ease the transition from your puppys current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Purina ONE until youre feeding Purina ONE exclusively. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets.
Purina One Recall History List:
In 2011 Purina One issued a recall for possible salmonella, but this recall only covered their cat food portion. However, in 2013, the recall happened again for possible salmonella contamination, this time with the Chicken and Whole Barley dog food recipe.
Although other lines from Purina have experienced other recalls, 2013 was the only time Purina One Dog food experienced a recall.

Well, if youre looking for premium dog food with high-quality ingredients, you wont like Purina ALPO Prime Cuts. The first ingredient is not real meat, but Yellow Corn.
Moreover, there is virtually no real meat in this recipe. The main protein sources are Meat And Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, and Corn Gluten Meal.
I hope I dont have to say how unhealthy this is for dogs. Animal sources are not named, so their quality is uncontrollable. And plant protein sources are biologically low in value for dogs.
The protein content of the product is 18%, which meets the requirements of AAFCO however, I do not really recommend this product due to the quality of the proteins.
In addition, artificial colors can be found among the ingredients. Although these are allowed, I still believe that these compounds are disadvantageous in the diet of dogs.
The overall picture is somewhat improved by the fact that the recipe contains added vitamins and minerals. This balances the nutrients somewhat.

As you can see from the Purina dog food reviews in my article, this brand is considered good overall. I mainly recommend Pro Plan products, but One recipe is also quite good if youre on a low budget.
Some product line recipes contain questionable ingredients, and although they are approved by the FDA, experts do not usually recommend them. My suggestion is that if you want to give Purina dog food to your pooch, choose Pro Plan or One.

Purina One Smartblend Natural Adult
This food has chunks of tender, meaty morsels in it, so dogs will be more likely to want to scarf it down than some other foods out there. It also uses lamb as one of its primary ingredients, and lamb is high in glucosamine, so it may help your dog stay spry and limber into old age.
The beef fat is another nice touch, as its full of omega fatty acids and other important nutrients. Theres also a little bit of carrots and peas sprinkled in for extra nutrients.
However, there are quite a few ingredients here that we dont like. Corn, wheat, chicken by-product, artificial colors and flavorsits like a Whos Who of disreputable foods. We dont know why a supposedly premium food would have all these things in it, but were sorry to see that it does.
Beyond that, theres less fiber in here than wed like, but that pales in comparison to the negative ingredients they used to make this formula.
The puppy version of this food is very similar to the basic formula reviewed above, but they used fewer low-quality ingredients, and even swapped some out for better foods.
Theres fish oil added in here, and thats about as close to a miracle food as you can find. Its good for the brain, eyes, immune system, skin and coatyou name it. Puppies need all the nutrients they can get, and fish oil is a great way to see that they get them.

The product contains very little real meat. The main protein sources are Meat And Bone Meal and Poultry By-Product Meal. Both are unnamed sources, so you may not know exactly how many animals are in it. This can be a problem when your dog has some sensitivity or allergy.
The primary ingredient and also the main source of carbohydrates is Whole Grain Corn. Its not the best quality carb, but it can be a good alternative if your dog doesnt have sensitivity to it.
On the other hand, Beef Fat is an excellent source of fat that contains valuable fatty acids and makes the recipe tasty.
Another positive is that the product contains added vitamins and minerals.
Overall, this is not the best Purina product. Still, if affordability and good taste are important considerations and your dog has no sensitivity or allergy to questionable ingredients, you can purchase this recipe.
