Ultimately, only you can decide what is best for you and your pets. The main point of my sharing this article is to simply beg pet owners to do their own extensive research on any pet food brand youre considering. Pet food brands can very often have misleading marketing.
Veterinarians mean well, but they also cant truly vouch for another brands ingredients or process. And as Ive learned, unfortunately, the FDA is not really concerned with the health of your pet meaning the current pet food regulations in the United States arent up to par.
After my mom and I reviewed as much information as we could about pet food brands and any associated lawsuits/recalls/complaints, and talked to other concerned pet owners, we ended up feeding our animals with a brand called NutriSource. While its not sold in major stores, we dont mind ordering online and it’s pretty affordable for a higher-end pet food.

Why I Researched Some Of The Worst Brands To Feed Your Dog Or Cat
My moms dog, Blossom, almost died in 2021… and her other 8-month-old puppy, Baby, was extremely lethargic. Were certain it was because of a premium brand of dog food called Taste of the Wild .
My mom does extensive research on every product she buys. Shes a big label-reader, and Taste of the Wild markets itself as a pure, raw, ancestral diet for your dog, using ingredients like wild boar, bison, smoked salmon, roasted duck, and venison. Sounds great, right? My mom thought so, tooshe only eats organic, whole foods herself, never any ingredients she cant pronounce, and she treats her animals the same.

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. Purina is confident that the contaminated wheat gluten has been isolated to this limited production quantity of ALPO Prime Cuts canned products.

Blue Ridge Beef Kitten Grind Raw Pet Food
When it was recalled: February, 2018
Why it was recalled: Blue Ridge Beef issued a recall on its Kitten Grind raw pet food due to potential salmonella and listeria contamination. The recall comes after two reported kitten deaths one of the deaths was confirmed to be a result of salmonella exposure. FDA testing confirmed the presence of salmonella and listeria in Kitten Grind raw food. Affected products are 2-pound rolls from lot GA1102.
If you have any of these foods at home, stop feeding them to your pet ASAP. And make sure you either return it or get rid of it so that no other animal can eat it.
What Do I Do With The Food Should I Be Worried About Myself Or My Dog
If your pet has been eating the recalled food, discontinue use immediately. Due to potential adverse reactions in dogs of any size, if you have been feeding your pet the potentially contaminated product, contact your veterinarian to ensure they know the situation. Then return the food to the original purchase location for a full refund.

The recall was initiated after Tuffys was notified by the product manufacturer that this product may contain elevated levels of vitamin D.
The manufacturer of the affected product has identified and isolated the error and corrective actions are in progress to prevent this from happening again.
There are no other Pure Vita products affected by this recall.
This voluntary recall is being made with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and is being made out of an abundance of caution.
Diamond Naturals Large Breed Adult
If youve got a king-sized dog at home, you may be interested in this formulation for Large Breeds. When a pet food is recalled, its taken off the market by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration . A pet food can be recalled if:
- It violates FDA regulations
- It can cause death
But just because something gets recalled doesnt necessarily mean that product is recalled forever.
According to the FDA, a recall is terminated when all reasonable efforts have been made to remove or correct the violative product and proper disposition has been made according to the degree of hazard.
So, more pet foods than the ones listed below have been recalled in the past five years, but those recalls have since been terminated. Were only including recalls that are still active, which means there can still be risks associated with using that product.
