Is Vegan Dog Food Good For Dogs

Does My Dog Need To Eat Meat

What We Feed Our Dog: Homemade Vegan Dog Food Recipe

The dogs of today are quite different from their wolven ancestors. Wolves hunt animals like deer, and consume the meat raw right after the kill. Dogs on the other hand have been raised to eat what humans feed them.

Our relationship with dogs dates back 15,000 years, and for most of that history, weve been feeding them food off our plate. Before the industrial revolution, it would have been rare for dogs to be fed meat, as it was a premium commodity. In the 1850s, supermarket dog food came on the scene and the pet food industry was born.

Contrary to popular belief, complete proteins arent only found in animal products. High quality plant proteins such as yeast, fungi, and algae are complete proteins, meaning they contain the 10 essential amino acids a dog needs to obtain from diet. Amino Acids work for dogs in the same way they do for humans. They help dogs build muscle, produce hormones, and fight infection.

Fermented yeast protein is the dog food of the future. Wild Earths pet food provides all essential amino acids without the need for animal suffering, and puts the debate to rest once and for all over what kind of food dogs really need to thrive.

Wet Food Vs Dry Food: Animal Products Are Often In Vegan Dog Foods

I found a concerning study in my research.

They tested several vegan dog foods for animal DNA.

They found that all dry vegan dog food that they tested contained some level of animal DNA. Almost none of the wet food did.

They didnt specify which brands they tested, or how much DNA was found however, so it could be a minuscule amount.

Still, I thought it was worth mentioning.

If you want to be 100% sure that your vegan dog food is actually vegan, stick to wet food.

With all that said, lets look at the best vegan dog foods, both wet and dry.

Not All Proteins Are Equal

Many vegan diets for dogs are within the range of normal protein intake, but on the low end of the spectrum, says Dr. Weeth. They may also vary in quality. Plant proteins dont have as complete a profile of amino acids for a dogs dietary needs as animal proteins do .

Vets look at biological value , a measurement used to determine the efficiency of a particular protein. For example, An egg has a very high BV. It has all of the essential amino acids that are required for a growing animal because its an egg, and its designed to support a growing fetus, Dr. Weeth says.

A seed, nut or grain, on the other hand, doesnt have as high of a BV its amino acid profile isnt as complete as that of an egg. So we need to look at the type of protein, the quality of protein, as well as the amount, she says. However, it is possible to combine different plant proteins so that all of the dogs amino acid requirements are met.

Another issue with plant proteins is that they tend to be less digestible for dogs than animal proteins, Dr. Weeth adds. So if youre feeding them soy, its going to get metabolized differently than if youre feeding them chicken or beef. And so we need to make sure that those plant-based proteins are digestible and the animal is able to utilize them. Otherwise we can run into problems, especially with pregnant dogs, lactating dogs or growing dogs.

Differences Between Vegetarian & Vegan Diet

It is important for dog owners to be aware of several facts and details before switching pet food. For some reason, a quick Google search will lead to several articles that use vegetarian dog food and vegan diets interchangeably. While vegetarian diets and vegan diets do have similarities, they also have important differences.

Vegetarian and vegan dog foods both lack meat. However, vegetarian diets can still have animal products such as eggs and milk whereas vegan diets cannot include any animal products. You can see why adopting any plant-based diet but particularly a vegan diet can be challenging to say the least.

Vegan dogs are very rarely susceptible to food allergies. According to BMC Veterinary Research, the top 3 most common food allergens in dogs are beef , dairy products , and chicken . However, plant-based ingredients wheat and soy come in at fourth and fifth respectively.

The same ingredients are usually suspected as the origins of many skin issues in dogs. A plant-based diet is also attributed to improving breath odor in most vegan dogs. Most vegan dog foods have very low-fat content and caloric load, making these diets appropriate for weight management.

Does A Vegan Diet Provide Enough Nutrition

Yes, if you use a commercially prepared complete dog food. All commercial dog foods described as complete are bound under law to provide all of a pets dietary requirements. It is interesting to note that adding food to an already complete commercial diet can actually cause nutritional deficiencies for example adding cooked chicken changes the calcium to phosphorus ratio, which is especially important for growing dogs. So there is no need to supplement your dogs diet with any extras if you are feeding a complete commercial pet food. If you do want to add something else, adding a small amount of a good quality balanced wet or dry dog food is much better than adding cooked chicken.

Can Dogs Eat Tempeh

Tempeh is generally safe for dogs. However, there is a potential risk for allergies whenever feeding your dog soy, and it is not a complete protein for dogs. That said, tempeh in moderation should be fine and healthy for your dog.

Again, Id start by only feeding my dog little scraps of tempeh. And I wouldnt rely on it to replace her overall dog food, as it is not specially formulated to fit her nutrient needs.

But yes, it should be safe to share some tempeh with your dog!

Balancing Human Ethics With Animal Needs

via flickr/jerkalertproductions

For dog lovers with strong convictions about eating plant-based diets, it can be challenging to reconcile personal politics with the needs of their dog. Im vegetarian, and I dont particularly relish serving up a meaty mess to my dogs. But I trust my veterinarian, who agrees with the general knowledge that an omnivorous diet is best for them.

Here are a few tips to ensure your dogs diet is healthy, humane and sustainable:

  • Select commercial pet food brands with high-quality ingredients that support humane and sustainable farming practices
  • Prepare wholesome homemade dog food using meats from local, trusted sources, and organic or home-grown veggies
  • Compromise by offering your dog vegan treats, and integrating a few meat-free meals per month, while still providing meat-based protein the rest of the time for a balanced omnivorous diet.

With lots of research and careful preparation of meals, it is possible to get dogs all of the nutrients they need without meat. For dogs with particularly sensitive stomachs or serious allergies, a vegetarian or vegan diet, under the supervision of a veterinarian, can be life-saving. Just be sure to consult with experts before you take this route.

Buying Guide For Best Vegetarian Dog Food

Like humans, dogs are omnivores, which means they can thrive on a well-balanced vegetarian or vegan diet. If you want or need to feed your dog a vegetarian diet, commercial vegetarian dog food is your best bet, as it will be complete and balanced to contain all the nutrients your dog needs. Many people feed dogs vegetarian food to align with their ethics, which is a totally valid choice, but it’s also worth noting that meat protein is one of the most commonly allergenic foods for dogs, so you may need to cut meat out of your dog’s diet for her health.

When searching for the best vegetarian dog food for your canine companion, there’s plenty to consider. You’ll need to find out what source of protein the food contains and look at the overall ingredient quality. There are also decisions to make, such as whether you want wet food, dry food, a complete dog food, or a mixer.

Myth: Plant Proteins Are Incomplete

FACT: Plant-based dog foods can provide all the amino acids your dog needs. Dogs require 10 amino acids in their diets, so be sure to look for a plant-based diet that meets AAFCO standards for dog nutrition. Taurine, which is not required by AAFCO, is typically added to these diets as well.

Vegetarian Diet For Dogs Is It Ok

If you check most dog food sites you will find that they support feeding dogs lots of meat protein. In fact, the trend at the moment is to move away from grains, especially corn, and toward feeding dogs more meat. The thinking is that its healthier for dogs to eat a diet that is closer to a natural diet for dogs. Some people look for an ancestral diet for dogs based on what wolves eat. Different people carry this approach to different lengths but you will find that most dog food manufacturers are basing their foods on higher protein from animal sources.

At the same time, dog foods also tend to follow human food trends. As people have become more conscious of organic foods, for example, so have dog owners, and they often seek out dog foods with organic ingredients. As people have become more aware of the benefits of many dietary supplements, dog food manufacturers have begun adding more and more supplements to dog foods. Terms like natural and holistic are used to market many dog foods in the hope of appealing to consumers.

Merely Listing The Vegetarian Foods A Person Enjoys Below A Detailed Description Of Their Personality And Habits Can Be Enough To Make Them Seem Less Masculine

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN DOG FOOD DIY|| WHY I FEED MY DOGS A VEGAN DIET|| SIMPLE, EASY & CHEAP

Take soy boys. The Urban Dictionary defines the slang term as applying to males who completely and utterly lack all necessary masculine qualities, and claims it originates from the link between the over-consumption of soya products and harm to the male physique and libido.

In his research, Heine has found that merely listing the vegetarian foods a person enjoys, below a detailed description of their personality and habits, can be enough to make them seem less masculine. Knowing that, perhaps some men are concerned about what will happen if they order a salad at a restaurant, he says.

In the 19th Century, restaurateurs decided attractive desserts – and salads – were examples of feminine foods

Margaret Thomas, a psychologist at Earlham College, Indiana, agrees. I dont think people necessarily recognise the extent to which the food they choose to eat affects their identity, she says. Thomas has also found that vegans are seen as less masculine but only if its a choice. When her study participants were told that a person had been forced into the diet because of mysterious digestive issues, they werent judged so harshly.

In 2018, the psychologist Carolyn Semmler set out to uncover if women are better at resolving the so-called meat paradox too. Theres a lot of literature about this, she says. The idea that people claim to love animals and yet they eat them.

How To Feed Your Dog If You’re Vegan

So, what’s a vegan pet parent to do? If your motivations for leading a vegan lifestyle are purely health-related, then it’s important to realize that the health benefits that you derive from eating vegan don’t extend to your dog. But things can get stickier if you’re a vegan for ethical reasons. If you’re struggling to strike a balance between feeding your dog a healthy diet and remaining true to your principles, here are some things that might help:

  • Talk to your vet about your concerns. They may be able to direct you to some quality dog foods that use eggs or dairy in place of meat, while also addressing any questions and concerns you have about what you should feed your pooch.
  • Consider compromising by feeding your pup a fish-based dog food.
  • Shop around for high-quality dog foods that use humanely sourced meats as well as ethically sourced fruits and vegetables.
  • If you’re absolutely determined that your dog eat vegan, consult a licensed veterinary nutritionist to develop a nutritionally sound vegan diet for your dog.

While the short answer to “Can dogs be vegan?” may technically be yes, as you’ve seen, the more thorough answer is that it’s far from ideal and even dangerous in some cases. Although it’s admirable to be concerned about the welfare of all animals, when it comes to feeding your four-legged best friend, it’s his life and health that should be at the forefront of your concern.

Can Dogs Eat Beyond Meat

Dogs can generally eat Beyond Meat safely, but its not recommended as a regular meal or replacement for dog food. It is not formulated to meet the nutritional needs of dogs, and the sodium content specifically may be higher than ideal for dogs.

Judging from the Beyond Meat ingredients lists Ive read on several of their products, I didnt see any onion or garlic listed.

So I dont think garlic or onion will be a problem with sharing Beyond Meat with your pup. But it may be worth checking the ingredients on the specific product you have!

There is apple extract in Beyond Burgers, and apples are listed by Healthline as harmful to dogs. However, its the seeds that are harmful . And I wouldnt expect the cyanide to come through in apple extract as an ingredient.
