Nutrish may have a $5 million lawsuit slapped against it right now, but its also estimated to be worth close to $2 billion dollars, if its recent purchase by Smucker Company is any indication.
The purchase of Nutrish, which has been called a disruptor in the pet food industry for its success since 2014, will add to a long list of pet food companies owned by Smucker, including Meow Mix, MilkBone, Kibbles n Bits, Natural Balance, and 9Lives.

Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is the company that owns Rachael Ray Nutrish. Here is the company’s explanation for why the recalled pet food contained excessive levels of vitamin D.
After conducting a number of product tests, Ainsworth confirmed that the affected products have elevated levels of vitamin D. The high levels result from the natural levels of vitamin D that are found in some of the fish ingredients that were used in these specific formulas.
Basically, they believe the problem stems from high levels of vitamin D in fish ingredients. Although the company did mention that they would reformulate the recalled varieties of cat food, they did not provide any specific procedural changes in manufacturing.
Ideally, consumers would like to know if Ainsworth Pet Nutrition will begin checking vitamin D levels in raw ingredients before putting them in Nutrish cat foods moving forward.

A good number of pet food recalls have centered on foods that are either sourced from or made in China. This has created a good deal of warranted concern about feeding pets foods that have any connection to China at all.
Certainly, a large majority of tainted pet food can be linked to China, however, other pet foods that are not linked to China can pose danger to your pet too. For example, the recent 2017 discovery of Pentobarbital in Evangers pet food.
Evangers pet food company claims that their dog foods are produced and sourced in the United States, yet, one dog died and three dogs became sick after eating pentobarbital-tainted Evangers food.
We could also look at the Petco warehouse investigation by the FDA in 2008.
The FDA found the warehouse in Joliet, Illinois, to be infested with birds and rodents and requested that Petco clean the location. When Petco failed to bring the warehouse up to standard, the US. Marshalls seized all products from the warehouse for being stored in unsanitary conditions.
Chinese companies arent always to blame for pet food contamination, however, the damage from U.S. pet foods is generally contained due to safety standards and production regulations.

How Nutritious Is Nutrish
The Nutrish brand of dog foods by now encompasses five different lines: Nutrish, Nutrish Dish, Just 6 , Zero Grain, and the protein-rich Peak.Dog Product Pickerrates Nutrish products very highly: a 99 percent approval rating for Nutrish, 96 percent for Zero Grain, 93 percent for Dish, 89 percent for Peak, and 85 percent for the Nutrish line of wet dog food.
Dog Food Advisor, however, is a little less enthusiastic about the product, awarding Nutrish 3 out of 5 stars and calling it an average dry product as far as nutrition goes. The Just 6 line also received only 3 stars, but the Zero Grain varieties earned between 3.5 and 4 stars.
