Is There An Easier Way To Ensure That Pet Food Is Sourced And Made In The Us

The best way to ensure that the pet food you select is sourced and made in the United States is to purchase from a brand known for their quality control policies.

The best resource for pet food companies who maintain full transparency in their quality and origin of ingredients is the Association for Truth in Pet Food website. Companies listed here have publicly pledged to maintain full transparency when it comes to their pet foods.

Unfortunately, the list of pet food companies dedicated to full transparency is quite small at this time. Despite many companies being asked to take the transparency pledge, only thirty-nine companies have taken it so far.

Has Rachael Ray Nutrish Ever Been Recalled

Yes, Rachael Ray Nutrish was recalled in 2015. The recall included five varieties of wet cat food which contained elevated levels of vitamin D. Eleven reports of illness were associated with the recalled products.

Although vitamin D is an important part of a cat’s diet, excessive amounts could cause serious problems. symptoms of excessive vitamin D include vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, increase urination, muscle tremors, and seizures.

Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is the company that owns Rachael Ray Nutrish. Here is the company’s explanation for why the recalled pet food contained excessive levels of vitamin D.

After conducting a number of product tests, Ainsworth confirmed that the affected products have elevated levels of vitamin D. The high levels result from the natural levels of vitamin D that are found in some of the fish ingredients that were used in these specific formulas.

Basically, they believe the problem stems from high levels of vitamin D in fish ingredients. Although the company did mention that they would reformulate the recalled varieties of cat food, they did not provide any specific procedural changes in manufacturing.

Ideally, consumers would like to know if Ainsworth Pet Nutrition will begin checking vitamin D levels in raw ingredients before putting them in Nutrish cat foods moving forward.

Why Is Dog Food From China Bad

The amount of rumors, controversies, and even recalls surrounding dog food from China has probably made your head spin with questions. Is dog food from China really that bad? What are the facts? What can I do to protect my pooch?

All of these are serious questions that need answering, especially due to the number of lawsuits and cases involving pet deaths from imported dog food. We shed a light on whats really going on in Chinas dog food production, and how you can keep your dog food clean and pup healthy.

The first question that comes to mind when discussing the dangers of pet food from China is usually, Why do we even import it at all?

The reason is twofold. The amount of leftover waste from poultry production, in particular, has fueled the idea of turning it into pet feed. China produces, consumes, and exports a high amount of chicken meat, and the leftovers become waste if they arent used. Since this waste wouldnt be used otherwise, pet food companies have decided to use it as a cheaper option to produce their dog food instead of purchasing premium home-grown chickens in the U.S.

While both of these reasons sound logical on the surface, we have to keep in mind the quality of the products being produced in China. For instance, most Vitamin C manufactured in China is from genetically modified corn whose long-term effects are unknown.

These are just some of those toxic ingredients:

Look For Food Without Chemicals Additives Or Other Vaguely Labeled Ingredients

If youre seeing chemical names or other vaguely listed ingredients like meat on a dog food brand, its best to skip it. When ingredient labels are unclear, it can suggest something hidden within that ingredient, such as meat by-products being hidden under the term meat. Instead, look for specific labels that are of real food, like chicken, turkey, salmon, or other named meats.

Health Extension states all of their ingredients are proudly made in the USA. Each ingredient is also of high quality, with the first ingredient being organic chicken in many of their formulations. They also dont contain by-products, gluten, wheat, corn, soy, or any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

Its Not Only Chinese Ingredients Or Foods That Pose Danger To Your Pet

Rachael Ray Just 6 Dry Dog Food | Chewy

A good number of pet food recalls have centered on foods that are either sourced from or made in China. This has created a good deal of warranted concern about feeding pets foods that have any connection to China at all.

Certainly, a large majority of tainted pet food can be linked to China, however, other pet foods that are not linked to China can pose danger to your pet too. For example, the recent 2017 discovery of Pentobarbital in Evangers pet food.

Evangers pet food company claims that their dog foods are produced and sourced in the United States, yet, one dog died and three dogs became sick after eating pentobarbital-tainted Evangers food.

We could also look at the Petco warehouse investigation by the FDA in 2008.

The FDA found the warehouse in Joliet, Illinois, to be infested with birds and rodents and requested that Petco clean the location. When Petco failed to bring the warehouse up to standard, the US. Marshalls seized all products from the warehouse for being stored in unsanitary conditions.

Chinese companies arent always to blame for pet food contamination, however, the damage from U.S. pet foods is generally contained due to safety standards and production regulations.

I Evaluated My Dogs Needs Before Making The Switch

Hey, every dog owner should do the evaluation part right. I checked with my gang of training dogs and puppies to see what they were lacking. I also double checked the fact if they needed a Grain-Free diet at all. As it turned out, few of them had allergy problems and a dull coat.

I decided to up the ante and removed any soy, corn, and cheap source of Carbs from their diet. I opted for the fresh veggies and fruits this lineup of products offered my friends. Also, the dogs needed a balanced protein to be active all day for training. Luckily, a welcome change to Rachael Ray Nutrish Dog Food supplied them with protein without making my head spin.

Does Having The Word Natural On The Label Mean The Pet Food Is 100% Healthier

Again, the answer is no. There is no regulation in the pet food industry that defines what natural means. It could mean there are no added colors, which would make it safer, but not 100% natural. You need to read your labels and research the brands. Make sure the pet food manufacturer’s definition of natural matches yours.
