  • Rachael Ray Nutrish Zero Grain

Zero Grains formulas from Rachael Ray use meat first recipes that exclude any grains or gluten. This product line features 4 dry dog food recipes based on chicken, turkey, salmon, or beef.

All recipes in the Zero Grain line up have no corn, wheat, soy, or gluten. Instead, grain-free Nutrish recipes use wholesome vegetables like sweet potatoes as an alternative source of digestible carbohydrates. Peas and tapioca provide additional gluten-free carbohydrate sources.

These formulas have a moderate protein content suitable for a wide range of dogs. The moderate fat content from flaxseed and animal fats is also ideal for most dogs.

Protein from U.S. farm-raised animals offers excellent digestibility for enhanced nutrient absorption compared to plant-based ingredients. But like some other grain-free formulas, the high volumes of peas and potatoes in this recipe are not ideal for dogs with heart conditions.

Rachael Ray dog food reviews share that this product can help manage the adverse reactions associated with grain sensitivities. But not all picky dogs find the flavor appealing.

Core Protein: Chicken & Chicken Meal

The first two ingredients listed on the Chicken & Veggies Recipe are chicken and chicken meal, which are both nutritious proteins that dogs often find delicious.

You always want to stick with foods that feature a whole protein at the top of the ingredient list, and you also want to ensure that any meat meals or byproducts contained in it are sourced from a single protein.

Rachael Rays Real Chicken & Veggies recipe satisfies both of these criteria.

According to the nutritional label, protein provides 26% of the calories in the Real Chicken & Veggies recipe.

Rachael Ray Dog Food Company Overview

Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food is a collaboration between celebrity chef and TV personality Rachael Ray and Ainsworth Pet Nutrition. Ainsworth has been in the business of making high quality pet foods for more than 80 years. Ainsworth approached Ray in 2008 for the possibility of establishing a brand of dog food that follows the recipes Ray has been producing for her pet Pit Bull terrier, Isaboo. This was after Ray and her husband spoke passionately on television about their love for animals especially their beloved Pit Bull.

The collaboration provided for a very specific clause which says that proceeds of the sale of each Rachael Ray Nutrish product should go to the funding of one of Rays charitable organizations dedicated to provide assistance to animals in need of medical treatments, food, and other needs. Rachaels Rescue also funds no-kill animal shelters throughout the country.

In spring 2018, Ainsworth Pet Nutrition was bought by J. M. Smucker for $1.9 billion effectively transferring ownership of the Rachael Ray dog food brand to the new company.

    Discussion Of The Primary Ingredients

Lawsuit Filed Against Rachael Ray’s Dog Food Brand, Claiming ‘Potentially Harmful’ Chemical

    Whole Chicken Meat

Whole chicken meat is the first ingredient of most Rachael Ray Nutrish varieties, so this is a great sign when looking at dog food ingredient lists. There are other sources of protein in Nutrish, but its great to see whole meat in one of the top five ingredients. Whole chicken tends to be easier to digest and absorb than meat meal, but it does reduce in size after cooking due to being mostly water.

    Chicken Meal

Chicken meal either the second or third ingredient in Rachael Ray Nutrish recipes, meaning extra protein for your dog. Chicken meal tends to get a bad reputation since its a processed ingredient, but it has more protein than whole meat and is made only with the clean parts of the chicken.

    Dried Peas

Peas are found in a lot of grain-free dog food recipes as a non-grain form of carbohydrates, but there have been recent studies that are showing a link between canine heart disease and peas, legumes, and potatoes. Although it may not solely be due to peas, this could be a concern if your dog already has heart problems. Also, the FDA listed Nutrish in their large recall of foods containing peas, legumes, and potatoes due to the presence of these ingredients in most of their food products.

    How Expensive Are Their Products

The Rachael Ray brand of pet food is by no means expensive in fact, it is designed for affordability and can be found in many local grocery stores.

For a 28-pound bag of dry food, you will spend less than $30 for most of the original recipes, though the Zero Grain and Peak formulas may cost a little more. For 8-ounce tubs of wet food, youll pay about $15 for a case of 8 which averages to about $1.87 per tub.

The Truth About Rachael Ray’s Dog Food

WhileRachael Raystarted off her career by cooking for humans, she soon morphed into an all-around domestic diva and then into a pet care guru. How did she go from people food to pet food? Rachael recalls that she decided to create her own dog food because she wanted her beloved pit bull, Isaboo, to eat as well as the rest of the family . She said she had difficulty finding a dog food that would taste good as well as being nutritious which makes us wonder, was she actually tasting different foods herself? Reading between the lines, it would seem that Isaboo was just a picky eater.

Anyway, Rachael enlisted the aid of Ainsworth Pet Nutrition, and the Nutrish line of pet foods was born in 2008. Just eight years later, it had become the fastest-growing U.S. pet food brand , so obviously Isaboo wasn’t the only dogger to find it yum-o!

Rachael Ray Nutrish: History & Background

Rachael Ray Nutrish Natural Dry Dog Food, Real Chicken ...

Rachael Ray Nutrish is a dog food brand designed by celebrity chef Rachael Ray and manufactured by Ainsworth Pet Nutrition.

Ray developed the original recipes for her own pet pit bull, and a portion of the proceeds generated by the brand are donated to Rachaels Rescue a shelter for at-risk dogs and several other pet charities.

Ainsworth Pet Nutrition was originally started more than 75 years ago by George Ainsworth Lang, who sought to make safe, high-quality, and affordable pet foods that dogs and cats would love. Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is headquartered in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and Lang family members continue to play an important role in the companys leadership team.

It is a little difficult to determine where their foods are made based on the information from the companys website however, we placed a phone call to Ainsworth Pet Nutrition to find out.

Their representative indicated that all Rachel Ray dry foods are made in the USA, while the canned and wet foods are made in Thailand. However, the representative indicated that those made in Thailand were manufactured under the same standards as their US-made foods are.

Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is a reputable and respected manufacturer, whose foods meet USDA, FDA, and AAFCO standards. A few Rachel Ray Nutrish cat foods were voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer in 2015 for potentially elevated vitamin D levels, which can be dangerous for cats.

Rachael Ray Nutrish Wet / Canned Food

Although Rachel Ray Nutrish is primarily a dry-food brand, they do produce six different wet recipes.

You can purchase these recipes individually, but they also come in a 3-flavor variety pack. Note that these foods are all packaged in small, elongated tubs with plastic lids, rather than metal cans.

Wet foods usually have more protein per bite than dry kibbles, and many dogs go crazy for their taste and texture.

Accordingly, wet foods usually cost more than dry foods it can be very expensive to feed a large dog a completely wet diet. You may want to consider feeding your dog a combination of wet and dry foods, to get the best of both worlds.

    Recalls Of Rachael Ray Nutrish

The Nutrish line itself hasnt suffered many recalls, but there have been some contamination and nutrition issues. Both Smucker and Ainsworth have had multiple recalls since both companies have been around for decades, both voluntary and FDA-issued.

    • 2015 Several cans of Rachael Ray Nutrish wet cat food were recalled for high levels of Vitamin D, which can be toxic to cats and dogs.
    • 2019 The FDA recalled multiple brands of grain-free dog foods, including several varieties from the Nutrish line.

Rachael Ray Nutrish Dog Food Recall History

Ive spent a lot of time trying to find out if Rachel Ray Nutrish dog products have been recalled. After an extensive search, Im pleased to inform you that none of Rachael Ray dog products have ever been recalled.

However, I managed to find recalls for some of the brands cat products. In 2015 the brand had to recall five variations of its wet cat food recipes because the FDA established that these products contained higher levels of vitamin D.

It is interesting to note that a customer filed a lawsuit against Rachael Ray Nutrish alleging that the Nutrish line contains glyphosate, a dangerous herbicide which is present in many dog products. However, a federal judge tossed the class action lawsuit due to the lack of specificity.
