What Is The Healthiest Diet For A Dog
It is entirely acceptable to feed your dog a pure kibble diet. Or you can mix their diet up with some cooked or raw meat, fish, vegetables and rice. Many owners like to feed a raw meat diet to their dogs, and while this can suit some dogs very well, there are some important considerations you need to be aware of.

Dog Food Companies Want To Make More Money
Its all about the bottom line! They dont care about you or your dog. Manufacturers use these grains, fillers, and chemicals instead of meat because they are cheaper to manufacture than meat.
Whats Meat By-Product?
Have you ever seen meat by-product meat listed as a dog food ingredient? Do you know what it is?
Its a dry leftover product from slaughterhouse waste. After all the edible cuts for humans have been removed, this waste product is what is leftover. This is the meat in some dog foods. This meat is not considered edible for humans .
However meat by-product doesnt specify the meat. It can include road kill or animals that have died at the factory because of disease. For more info on dog food by-products, you can read this article HERE
There are many complaints online from people who fed their dog Pedigree and the dog became sick and vomited, was lethargic, had diarrhea and other intestinal issues.
Feeding your Rottweiler sub-par food can also cause skin and allergy issues.
Now, keep in mind, someone will always find something wrong with even the best dog food!
The idea is to feed your rottweiler the best food that you can afford to buy or make a way to buy.

Pedigree Dog Food
Why is Pedigree Dog Food on my list of popular dogs foods that are bad for your dog? The ingredients: Ground whole corn, chicken by-product meal corn gluten meal, animal fat , meat and bone meal , brewers rice, ground whole wheat, dried plain beet pulp, natural flavor, salt, potassium chloride, vegetable oil , vitamins , choline chloride, minerals , added FD& C colors
Are these 8 popular dog foods enough to get you to read the labels from now on? Most of these ingredients are non-foods. That’s enough of an indication that they don’t belong in your dog’s tummy. While healthy dog food costs a bit more than this junk food, it may save your dog from getting diabetes or worse illnesses later on. If you can’t afford to buy a better dog food, then you should probably think about building a budget for more vet bills. You will end up paying more in the long run for cheap dog foods that are bad for your pet.
Top 5 Ingredients Breakdown
The first five ingredients in this food are: Ground whole corn, poultry by-product meal, brewers rice, corn gluten meal , animal fat . Youll notice that there are two sources of corn in the first five ingredients ground whole corn and corn gluten meal. When pet food manufacturers do this it is called splitting. It can mislead consumers about the total amount of an ingredient in the food. In this case, there is more corn in the food than you may think. However, since the first ingredient is already corn, you should recognize from the start that the food contains a lot of grain-based protein.
Corn and corn gluten meal are not bad ingredients but when they are over-used in pet foods as a substitute for meat proteins, they are not desirable. Dogs do not digest as much protein from these plant proteins as they do from meat proteins so they are less nutritious for your pet. Corn is also a frequent trigger for allergies in dogs that are prone to allergies and food intolerances. Note, if your dog doesnt have allergies or if he is not prone to allergies, then he can probably eat dog food containing corn without any problems. Many dogs eat food containing corn and they never have any issues. However, if your dog is part of the 10 percent of dogs that has a food allergy, corn could be an issue.

So Is Pedigree Good for Dogs? Our response to that is yes and blindly yes.
There are quite a few articles across the internet that pedigree has too much of grain and it is bad for dogs, but the fact is that our dogs might have taken the pedigree as the first food! Yes, as we know Pedigree is the worlds most preferred choice for breeders.
This topic is not for rich guys who can afford could afford 500 to 1000 dollars per month for their dogs but for someone who could not afford those but who wants to give a good feed for their dogs and keep them healthy and happy.
A Healthy Dog is happiness
The reasons for that could be numerous but here are few we picked out
- Cost effective
The general scenario of a new dog owner will be something like they would opt-out for costly dog food with high protein values and great supplements but eventually, they switch something which is cost-effective.
We advise starting with a pedigree for rescued dogs as they easily get habituated to the pedigree food and cost-effective suggested by.
- Why always commercial Foods?
But, no matter what you do, stay away from meat-free dog foods, not meat by-products. By-products mean any part of the animal except meat

Cooking Our Way To A Healthier Dog Diet
Ever since I started raising my own dogs, Id always wanted to make their food at home but thought it would be too expensive or too time consuming, or that they wouldnt get the nutrition they needed.
During the month of Bugs doggy depression, I vowed to make her precious life as comfortable as possible.
Both of my pugs had a range of health issues growing up, which I unfortunately found out were common for the breed.
My older one had persistent hot spots and itchiness that no commercial dog food could cure .
Bug was overweight for a while when she was younger, even though she ate the recommended amount of food for her target weight. Eventually, I settled on Wellness kibbles and they did well with that brand.
But, I wanted to explore other options. I wanted to give them real food fresh, nutritious ingredients that I recognized and could even eat myself.
Ive mentioned in my post on homemade whole grain chicken feed that the entire household all share the same whole grains and seeds that we buy in bulk, as well as the bounty that comes from our edible garden.
Everything our animals eat, we can eat.
When it comes to homemade feed for our laying hens, we stick to a tried-and-true formula that works for every layer: 16 to 17 percent protein , vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from a wide variety of grains and seeds, and free range of a pasture for weeds, greens, and insects.
Dogs, on the other hand, arent bred for a standard function the way chickens are.

What The Ingredients Really Say
The first ingredient in this Mars dog food is wholegrain cereals
Given dogs are essentially carnivores, from the Order Carnivora, were already off to a bad start. You see, cereals arent really included for nutrition, theyre included because theyre one of the cheapest ways to produce a pet food without filling it full of urea.
You may wonder what they mean by real beef, and its a marketing term I find very funny given the opposite would be unreal beef. What they mean is theyre not using meat meal, which is a rendering process which turns meat and meat by-products into a powder. Real beef isnt necessarily Quality beef.
The meat content in the food is unspecified. We dont see chicken here, or lamb, we just see meat by-products. I thought they advertised Pedigree dog food as using quality ingredients? We dont even know what meat theyre using other than its some combination of various poultry, possibly some parts of a cow, or possibly some parts of a sheep.
The truth is more likely this theyll use whatever animal, and whatever parts of those animals, they can source the cheapest.
We estimate over half of Pedigree dog kibble to be carbohydrates . The 20% protein and 10% fat is really bad, and given they use a typical analysis rather than a guaranteed analysis theres probably even less protein, less fat, and more carbohydrates.
Yep, this isnt looking good for Pedigree, and its hard to understand why they market this dog food as quality.
Best Dog Food For Small And Large Breeds
Small breed dogs and large breed dogs have different nutritional needs. Large breed dogs are more prone to musculoskeletal problems than smaller breeds, and so they often require large-breed dog food with different balances of certain nutrients to promote musculoskeletal health, especially as puppies. Small breed dogs, on the other hand, can choke on large-sized kibble and have their own nutritional requirements that can be accommodated with a small-breed dog food. Research your dogs breed to find out if there are any additional nutritional requirements you should be aware of.

Homemade Raw Dog Food
An easy recipe and guidelines for making homemade raw dog food that you can tweak as necessary to what best fits your dog.
For as health conscious as I am about what kind of foods I put in my own body, I have to admit for the better part of six of her seven years, I pretty much fed Ginger the equivalent of fast food to humans.
Sure, it was the good fast food but after awhile, even Chick-Fil-A isnt healthy any more if you know what I mean.
Of course, occasionally I made her homemade pumpkin dog treats but more often than not her food was anything but homemade.
Then one day earlier this year it was like a switch got flipped.
The guy who sold us our water softener system was sitting in our kitchen and as Ulysses looked over models trying to figure out which one made the most sense, the sales guy and I started talking about dog food.
He explained how he starting feeding a raw food diet for his dogs and how their energy levels were through the roof , their coats were shinier than ever and their teeth in great shape.
It made sense.
I completely buy into the same theories from a human perspective, why wouldnt it be the same for dogs?
So, next trip to Petco, I was forking over some serious money for frozen raw dog food patties and giving this whole thing a shot.
The first meal I gave her the homemade raw dog food, she came running back into the kitchen after licking the bowl clean as if she was begging for more.
Which Types Of Dogs Is Pedigree Dog Food Best Suited For
Overall, we recommend Pedigree dog food for pups in good health. In other words, these arent necessarily the best formulas for dogs with pre-existing health conditions, food allergies, and other concerns.
With that said, this brand is one of the most affordable dog food labels out there for a reason. If youre able to invest a little extra into your regular dog food budget, your four-legged companions might be better off with something of a bit higher quality.
While we understand that not all dog owners can afford premium dog food formulas, some great alternatives available at your local supermarket might include the Nutro Wholesome Essentials Adult Dry Food or the Purina Pro Plan FOCUS Adult Sensitive Skin & Stomach.

Dogs Reaction To Pedigree
It is relatively easy to understand your dogs reaction if whether they like Pedigree or not. Most of the dogs who love the flavor, texture, and smell quickly devour it by wagging their tails and impatiently looking at the food packet every time the owner is in the kitchen.
While dogs who do not like Pedigree show clear signs of their dislike by not eating the food or spreading it instead of consuming it.
Raw Dog Food Recipe Proportions
- 80% meat with fat
- 5% vegetables/fruits
- 5% dairy/supplements
Using those simple proportions, you can pretty much make up your own recipe from whatever you have on hand or find on sale at the store or.
Meat with fat: I will usually buy ground meat of some sort for this just because its easier than breaking down other cuts. Beef, chicken, pork, bison, gamey meats, etc.
Organs: The good news is organs are cheap. The bad news is organs are kind of gross. Nothing like some slimy chicken livers getting pulsed up in your food processor. Liver and kidneys are the two easiest to find in the grocery store.
Vegetables/fruits: Ginger happens to hate vegetables and fruit. Shes literally spit them out before or eaten around them if weve tried to feed her some in her bowl. So I choose sweet things here like apples and carrots and they get processed real fine so she cant tell. Avoid onions, grapes and raisins as they can cause kidney failure in dogs.
Dairy/supplements: Whole eggs are a great source of calcium. Ill also use some plain yogurt to help bind the patties. Supplement wise, ground flaxseed meal, olive oil and fish oil are great additions too.

Raw Feeding A Rottweiler
Many people feed their Rottie raw food with bones and all. Some people feed them cooked food like meat and vegetables.
They can eat any meat, poultry, rice, most fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes, but you must make sure they are in the correct ratios for the size and age of your particular dog.
Also, you dont want to spice the food. It should be plain.
There are some foods Rotties cannot eat like onion, stalks of celery and grapes.
TIP: For upset stomach issues like diarrhea, you can feed your Rottie pumpkin or cooked oatmeal and not the sweet kind in the little packets. You can also feed them plain boiled chicken and rice mixed together.
Those tips do help! Ive given my Rottie those foods when he has stomach issues and it helps him quickly.
