Pedigree Vs Purina Dog Food: 2021 Comparison
You wont find two more massive titans in the pet food world, as Pedigree and Purina are the biggest and second-biggest pet food brands in the world, respectively. Youll find their brands anywhere pet food is sold but does the fact that theyre ubiquitous mean that theyre good?
And more importantly, when it comes to Pedigree vs Purina, which one is better?
We took a deep dive into both brands to determine a winner so that you can give your dog food you can trust. And while there was one brand we prefer over the other, that doesnt mean that we didnt uncover a few surprises along the way .
Guaranteed Analysis: Purina Dog Chow Vs Pedigree
According to AAFCO, all pet food labels must provide a guaranteed analysis of nutrient content. The analysis must provide guaranteed minimum percentages of crude protein and crude fat, and maximum percentages of crude fiber and moisture.
All percentages used in this comparison are averages reported on adry matter basis.
What Dog Food Is Killing Dogs
A pet food recall is widening after the Food and Drug Administration announced that more than two dozen dogs died after eating Sportmix brand dry kibble. The statement issued on Monday said that the suspect is aflatoxin, a byproduct of a corn mold Aspergillus flavus, which at high levels can kill pets.

Pedigree Vs Purina One: Crude Protein Comparison
Merriam Webster defines amino acids as a constituent of all living cells, essential ones that play a role in protein synthesis. So without these essential amino acids in pet food, your canine friend would be missing out on some essential physical and mental benefits.
For example, there are 12 types that the body can synthesize naturally, but 10 have to come from food sources.
The latter includes such things as taurine , histidine , or tyrosine for regulating blood sugar levels to name a few examples! Its incredible how many ways our dog friends depend on us humans for their well-being.
Pedigree has 41.2% crude protein, while Purina One is 45.3%. When it comes to dry food and wet food products, the difference in essential amino acids between brands is less noticeable with canned dog food than when looking at their ingredients for dried kibbles alone.
What is similar in both brands is that none of them produces a poultry by-product meal that reduces the quality of the ingredients added to the pet food.
Who Makes Pedigree Dog Food And Where Is It Produced

The Pedigree brand is one of many dog food labels owned by Mars, Incorporated, which also owns popular human consumables like M& M candies, Snickers, and Milky Way. Dont worry, though the factories that make your favorite candy bars are not also making your dogs dinner!
While many Pedigree dog food formulas bear a Made in the U.S.A. label, its unclear if this applies to every dog food recipe manufactured by the brand. Since this information isnt readily available, we think its safe to say that not all Pedigree dog food formulas are made in the United States. If youre concerned about where your dogs food is manufactured, we suggest only purchasing Pedigree products that display the Made in the U.S.A. label.

Dog Ice Cream Ingredients
The ingredients in Frosty Paws peanut butter ice cream include water, whey, soy flour, coconut oil, sorbitol, natural flavors, and several other ingredients you would probably not recognize.
This simple recipe uses just three ingredients that are generally considered healthy for dogs in moderation. However, like humans, dogs can have food sensitivities, so always keep an eye on your dog when introducing new foods.
Homemade dog treats should be considered treats, rather than food to consume daily. There is no reason to add honey or other sweeteners to dog ice cream, as most dogs love these ingredients already. Feel free to adapt this recipe with other dog-safe ingredients like pumpkin puree, which is good for digestion.

Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food

- Contains one 20.4 lb. bag of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Adult Dry Dog Food, Grilled Steak & …
- This dry food recipe helps maintain a healthy lifestyle with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals,…
This is the companys basic kibble, and its extremely affordable. You can buy a large bag for cheap, making it a great choice for owners on a budget or those trying to feed several dogs without going broke.
Why is it so cheap? A big reason is that the first ingredient is corn. This is a pretty cheap filler, and its full of empty calories, too. The second ingredient is meat and bone meal, which is full of important nutrients, but it feels incomplete without also having lean meat in there as well.
Most of the other ingredients are either animal by-products or grain meal, so dont expect a ton of nutrition. Theres only 21% protein and 10% fat in here, too which is not ideal for keeping your dog lean and trim.
Theres a decent amount of fiber inside, largely due to the dried beet pulp they include. While fibers important, its a distant second to the protein. Wed say we want them to increase the amount of protein inside, but given the ingredients list, were afraid of where theyd find the meat to do so.
We complained about the minimal amount of protein in their basic kibble above, and this recipe is their reply to that criticism. However, high protein to them appears to be average protein to most other food manufacturers.

Guaranteed Analysis Comparison: Who Wins
The AAFCO recommendation is that dogs should receive at least 22% protein. Protein is a key ingredient in a healthy diet, and its crucial for maintaining a healthy weight. Both Purina One and Blue Buffalo offer appropriate levels of protein. Specific formulas do vary in their protein levels, with wet foods and specialty high-protein diets having higher levels, but both brands are sufficient according to AAFCO standards.
Fat is another important nutrient for a balanced diet. It provides energy and helps to keep a coat healthy and shiny. Too much fat can lead to weight gain and some health problems. The AAFCO recommendation is 12%, and both Purina One and Blue Buffalo meet this requirement with similar levels.
Fiber is another important nutrient to track as it is vital for digestive health. However, dogs cannot break down large quantities of fiber or plant material. AAFCO recommends a minimum amount of 5% fiber. Both the Purina One and Blue Buffalo formulas meet the recommended fiber level.
Overall, the guaranteed analysis for both pet food brands is fairly similar, and both brands meet the recommendations set by AAFCO. In this category, well consider the brands tied.

Can Dogs Eat Boiled Eggs
Eggs should be cooked before given to a dog. Cook or boil eggs plain without oil, butter, salt, seasoning, spices, or other additives. It doesnt matter how your dog likes their eggs sunny side up, scrambled, or hard boiled as long as they are cooked. In general, dogs shouldnt eat more than one egg per day.

Pedigree Pushes Wet Food As Hard As Kibble
When they think of Pedigree, most people likely picture their big yellow cans. The company has long pushed wet food as a healthy alternative to dry kibble, even though the science doesnt necessarily back them up in that regard.
Some of their lines like Cesar, for example are primarily wet food-based.

Pedigrees bag states its primary source of protein is meat. But when you look closely at the label the first item listed is ground whole corn, a carbohydrate. Dogs are carnivores and love meat. Shouldnt that be the first thing listed on the bag? Nowhere in the first five ingredients is there a mention of whole, unadulterated meat.
The second item on the ingredient list is meat and bone meal. Theres your protein, but in the form of the nasty bits of the animal bones, livers, lungs, fetuses, etc. It can be high in protein, which is good for your dog, but its still not meat.
Items three and four on the ingredient list include ground whole wheat and corn gluten meal more carbohydrates. Carbohydrates arent bad for a dog, but as in a human diet, carbs can lead to increased weight and lethargy in dogs.
More carbohydrates come next, with corn gluten meal, along with a final mixture of meat and bone meal.

How To Switch Dog Food
You may be anxious to make the switch to a new food, particularly if the new food will help address any issues your dog is having. A gradual transition is the best way to switch to a new food, though.
We recommend making the switch over a 7- to 10-day period. This gives your dog a chance to adjust to the new food.
Heres our 7- to 10-day plan for switching dog food:
- Days 1 to 2: Feed 3/4 of the normal amount of current food and add 1/4 of the new food.
- Days 3 to 4: Serve half the current food and half the new food.
- Days 5 to 7: Feed 3/4 of the new food and 1/4 the previous food.
- Days 8 to 10: Serve only the new food.
If your dog doesnt seem to like the new food or if he experiences digestive upset, extend the transition over a few more days. You can also ask your veterinarian for advice.
Remember, you can use this transition process any time you need to change your dogs food.

Pedigree Complete Nutrition Adult Grilled Steak & Vegetable
This dog food is billed as providing complete nutrition for adult pups and even includes an optimal content of omega fatty acids for shiny hair.
It also proudly boasts that it is made of the finest ingredients. Looking closely at the label, however, we see a different story.
The first ingredient of the meal is ground whole grain corn. The third ingredient is also corn while the fifth is soybean meal.
So in the first five slots, you get three corn and legume ingredients, which means that this is not a meat-based dish at all. Here, the meat acts as support only and not the other way around, and there are too many grains.
The second thing we dont like about this recipe is that it uses unrecognizable animal ingredients. Were talking about the meat and bone meal.
Meat meals are usually okay provided that the animal the meat comes from is named. For example, chicken meal or lamb meal. But meat and bone meal? Which animal meat was used? Is there more than one kind of animal? And then, which parts?
Lastly, while the brand says that the recipe does not contain artificial flavors or sugar, it does contain artificial colors. There are four we could see, and theyre listed midway in the list, having more volume than the added nutrients the food contains.
Problem Ingredients: Ground Whole Grain Corn, Meat And Bone Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Soybean Meal, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Wheat, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2, Yellow 5

Worst Adult Dry Dog Food: Iams Proactive Health
The primary ingredient in IAMS Proactive Health Adult Chunks dry dog food is chicken.
Though chicken is a quality item and raw chicken comprises about 80% water, but when cooked, most of the water is lost, which reduces the meat content to just a portion of its initial weight.
After processing, these ingredients would probably account for a smaller fraction of the whole content of the finished food.
The second ingredient is cornmeal which is coarse ground flour made from the dried corn. Corn is a controversial and inexpensive cereal grain of low nutritional value to a dog.
For that reason, it is not a preferred part of any dog food.
The third ingredient of this product is sorghum , a starchy cereal grain with a similar nutrient profile to corn.
Because it is gluten-free and claims a smoother blood sugar performance than other grains, sorghum may be considered a satisfactory non-meat ingredient.
The fourth ingredient is chicken by-product meal, which is a dry product of the slaughterhouse waste.
This meal is made after all prime cuts have been separated, which includes almost anything left, including beaks, feet, and even undeveloped eggs, anything except the feathers.
But on the bright side, these portions are meat concentrates and comprise protein approximately 300% more than the fresh chicken.
The fifth ingredient is beet pulp, a controversial ingredient, as it is a high fiber by-product made of sugar beet processing.
