Chickens are some seriously diverse eaters. After seeing the long list of foods that chickens will happily eat, its pretty difficult to think of them as picky eaters. Just like dogs, chickens will eat pretty much anything you offer them, except chickens will eat the leafy greens too, which dogs often show disdain for.

From fruits and weeds to insects and animals, chickens are voracious omnivores. Theyll eat plant-based foods and animal proteins, providing a complete mix of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and essential nutrients. Many chickens will get a lot of their food from simply foraging. While foraging, chickens will eat grass, weeds, flowers, insects, small animals, seeds, and whatever else they manage to find.

But when your chickens arent foraging, what should you be feeding them? If youre unsure, the following 99 foods are a great place to start. These foods are all safe for chickens, and many of them are favorite foods of the species. For easier browsing, weve split the foods into groups, such as vegetables, fruits, and kitchen scraps.

Worst Dog Food Brands To Avoid In 2021

Unfortunately, not all dog foods are created equal!

Thats why its essential to learn about the worst dog food brands and discover the best dog foods of 2021 to ensure your furry friend is getting the nutrition they deserve.

The list is based on factual data regarding the percentage of all the ingredients used in the various dog foods.

What makes the dog food brands on this list worth avoiding is that they fail to provide many -if any- of those nutrients your dog needs to stay healthy. Instead they use a variety of low-quality ingredients and types of filler.

These can be harmful or unnamed ingredients that make them bad choices.

What Not To Feed Chickens: 7 Things To Avoid

1. Avocadoes

As with most of the things on this list, I was able to find several people who report feeding avocado to their flock without problem. However, it seems that most sources advise against it. The pit and peel of an avocado contains a compound called persin, which can be very toxic to birds. Ill definitely be leaving these out of my chicken bucket from now on!

2. Chocolate or Candy

I think most of us probably wouldnt feed chocolate to our hens, since its famous for being toxic to dogs. Theobromine is also thought to be toxic to poultry, so its best to steer clear. I doubt my girls have much of a chocolate craving anyway.

3. Citrus

Actually, I think that the jury is still out on this one Im not 100% convinced that citrus is bad for them, since Ive heard such varying reports. I know that my girls wont touch it anyway, so I dont have to worry too much. If you are nervous, it might be best to use those peels to freshen your garbage disposal or make all-purpose cleaner instead.

4. Green Potato Skins

Green potatoes contain solanine another toxic substance. Its ok to feed your flock regular or cooked potatoes, but avoid those green ones in large quantities.

5. Dry Beans

Cooked beans are fine but their dried counterparts contain hemaglutin a big no-no.

6. Junk Food

7. Moldy or Rotten Food

For obvious reasons Stale or overripe foods are fine, but if its rotten, just toss it.

How To Feed Chickens

So now you know what you should be feeding your chickens, the next question is how you should feed them?

We feed our chickens pellets once in the morning and once in the evening- remember they like to eat small portions but often.

Some people prefer to throw chicken pellet straight onto the floor and let their chickens peck at it there. We put our pellets into a chicken trough to keep them clean and dry.

Serving dog food to your chickens is not a complicated task. There are three common ways you can go about it:

  • You can simply offer them dog food as it is or sprinkle it around their coop.
  • If you want to be more creative, you also mash the dog food and mix with the regular poultry feed your chickens eat every day.
  • Dog food also gets along with other treats such as nuts and seeds.
  • All you need to be careful about is moderation, and youre good to go.

    Chicken Breeds I Recommend

My first recommendation to someone just getting into chickens would be Australorps. They are very sweet, incredible egg layers and Ive found that they are very hardy birds.

If you have a lot of property and want your chickens to forage for most of their food, my Welsummers are nearly fearless in that regard and will expand their bug search far beyond their coop, unlike some other breeds.

Australorp: The Australorp is the national breed of Australia. These popular additions to backyard flocks are known as egg-laying machines. There are reports of Australorps laying eggs nearly year-round with the recorded record being 364 eggs in 365 days!

Orpington: Orpingtons are docile with quiet demeanors and are good layers of light brown eggs. They come in buff , black, white and blue varieties.

Barred Plymouth Rock: Barred Rocks are friendly, hardy chickens that are great layers of large brown eggs, making them very popular for backyard flocks. This breed began in New England.

Red Star: Owners of Red Stars are passionate about the breed, raving about the birds extremely friendly personalities and amazing level of egg production. If you want an egg-laying machine, get a Red Star.

Rhode Island Red: Exceptionally hardy, the Rhode Island Red lays large brown eggs. Some chicken owners say RIRs have easygoing personalities others say they are bossy. They arent the quietest either, but are great layers.

    Chicken As The First Ingredient

Traditionally, the first ingredient listed on the ingredients is the most prominent ingredient. If you wish to have a dog food that has the most lean protein, look for chicken as the number one ingredient. Equally important, look to see that actual chicken is the first ingredient and not chicken by-product.

When Can You Give Your Chickens A Snack

Your chickens will do well with a small snack every day. In addition to their regular grazing, pecking, and supply of layer feed, you can toss a handful of tasty treats into their pen or wherever they graze.

During the molting season, you can take the snacking up a notch as well. By adding a higher amount of protein into their diet, your birds will more easily reproduce the feathers lost during the molt and get them back on the right track to laying eggs after a stressful time.

Toss a few extra handfuls of dog food, cat food, or some other high protein snack, or simply mix a bit of the good stuff into their pellet feed to jumpstart their recovery from the molt, the swing into the cold weather, or use it to boost egg production in some withholding hens. Well-fed chickens are happy chickens, and we all know that happy chickens lay the best eggs.

Why Is Chicken Meal Used In Dog Food

“When were making pet food, we need a certain proportion of wet and dry ingredients and also need to balance the nutritional needs of pets,” says Dr. RuthAnn Lobos, a Purina Veterinarian. “By drying and grinding up the chicken, the end product is a concentrated, bioavailable protein source.””If we tried to use all chicken breasts for example, which are about 75% moisture, to make kibble, it would be way too watery and would not come out properly through the extrusion process,” says Lobos.

Raising Chickens To Feed Your Dogs

Raising chickens for their eggs and meat is the single best step you can take in feeding your dog an organic, home-raised, raw diet, without breaking the bank.

Many people shy away from feeding their dog a raw diet because of the price of raw foods, but Im living proof that feeding raw is the single best diet for your wallet and raising chickens to feed your dogs is one reason why.

On January 1st of this year my first eight chickens arrived in the mail. It was a new experience to say the least because -as far as I could remember- Id never even held a chicken, let alone cared for one. Today I have upwards of 50 laying hens and my raw feeding costs are lower than ever.

The Nutritional Benefits Of Chicken And Chicken Meal

Chicken is one of the leanest sources of complete animal protein used in pet foods and it is also one of the most inexpensive and therefore most common proteins. Chicken breast meat contains about 165 calories per 100-gram serving along with 31 grams of protein, 0 grams of carbohydrate, and 3.6 grams of fat.

Only 1 gram of that fat is saturated the rest is polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat. You should also know that, as an animal protein, chicken is a complete protein it contains all of the essential amino acids your dog needs. It is also rich in calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin A, and various B vitamins.

In addition to knowing the nutritional benefits of chicken for your dog, you should also know the difference between different types of chicken-based ingredients. Most pet foods that use chicken use chicken breast meat, the leanest part of the bird, but not all brands specify the type of chicken they use.

Something else you should know is that there is a difference between fresh chicken and chicken meal. Both of these are made from fresh chicken meat, but the latter is cooked to remove moisture in a process that renders it a highly-concentrated source of animal protein.

Fresh chicken meat contains up to 70% moisture by volume . This means that when that product goes through the cooking process and the total moisture content is reduced to 10%, the final volume of the chicken will be much lower.
