Benefits Of Homemade Dog Food

According to them, homemade dog foods include an assortment of whole foods and gives you control over what goes into your poochs stomach.
Here are the benefits of homemade dog food:
Adapting To Varying Needs
Compared to their ancestors, our canine buddies have a bigger life expectancy. While that is sounds great, changes in dietary needs becomes a challenge as they age and develop some health issues. This makes finding the best commercial foods for such needs difficult.
With homemade recipes, catering for these needs is easier as you will only be required to remove some ingredients and substituting them with new ones. You can do all this without altering his feeding routine.

What Kind Of Snacks Can I Feed A Dog With Kidney Disease
Our dogs seriously LOVE snack time, but snack time has had to seriously change! Dogs with kidney disease should avoid meat based chews/treats that are high in phosphorus, so you may find that you need to explore new types of treats for your dog instead. My probiotic rich Pumpkin & Yogurt Bowlsare our dog’s favorite treat these days! They also really enjoy thin apple slices, blueberries, and fresh banana chunks. When it comes to crunchy chews they both are SUPER into dehydrated banana chips, pumpkin, and sweet potato. I swear, our dog’s drool for them like they are the jerky chews we used to treat them with!

Consult With Your Vet About Nutritional Options
The first place to begin your search lies with your vet. Your vet has been trained in animal health and has extensive experience working with puppies just like yours. This gives them great insight into the different types of puppy food.
The vet has also examined and worked with your dog. This means that if your puppy has any special dietary considerations, the vet can help you by offering food recommendations and let you know what you should look for with commercial food. They can advise you about certain ingredients, such as flaxseed, or if your dog should avoid lentils and focus on more meat meals.
Begin by asking your vet about the nutrient profile they recommend you follow for your pitbull puppy. The vet should give you information regarding what you should look for in the puppy food you select. You may also want to ask for suggestions regarding the percent protein or types of veggies your puppys food should contain.
Homemade Dog Food: Overview
1. Feed your dog a wide variety of foods from different food groups.
2. Make sure you supplement your dogs homemade diet with calcium unless you feed raw meaty bones.
3. Stick to lean meats and remove skin from the poultry you feed unless your dog is highly active.
4. Keep in mind that the less variety of foods you feed, the more important supplements become.
5. Review your homemade dog food diet plan with a veterinarian for approval.
In the past few issues of Whole Dog Journal, I have offered critiques on homemade dog food diets in order to address the dogs health concerns or simply to optimize the dogs diet plan. To do this, I analyzed the cooked and raw homemade dog food diets and compared them to the National Research Councils guidelines for canine nutrition. I want to be clear, though: I dont believe this is a requirement for feeding home-cooked dog food. Just as with the diet you feed yourself and your family, feeding a wide variety of healthy foods in appropriate proportions should meet the needs of most healthy dogs. The best diet for dogs, in effect, is a diverse diet.

The Carbohydrate In Dog
This ingredient is very high in good carbs and is easily digested. Many lower quality dog-food brands forgo this ingredient as it can be more expensive to use.
Oats are also an excellent source of carbohydrates. Pit bulls can be more susceptible to food allergies and oats can be an easy remedy.
Veggies dont just provide protein in dog food. They also provide natural carbs to keep pits bulls full of energy and promote a shiny, healthy coat.
You should also keep a look out for vitamins in your dog food. Vitamin A, B, D, and K are especially important.
Vitamin names you may see on the back of the dog food bag are biotin, riboflavin, phosphorus, pyridoxine, beta-carotene, and thiamin. More information about dog-food ingredients can be found here.
Pitbull Puppy Feeding Chart
6-Week Old Pitbull At six weeks, your Pitbull puppy can be provided with moistened dry kibble to make it easier to eat. You can try moistening with water but if your puppy refuses, try using some warm milk replacement formula that is created with a puppys digestive system in mind.
Dont use cows milk to moisten dry kibbles because dogs digestive systems cant handle the lactose and youll be dealing with an upset pup and loose stools. If your puppy doesnt take water as a moistener, you can try using goats milk.
10-Week Old Pitbull During this stage, your Pitbull should be weaned onto solid foods. Use puppy-specific recipes to be sure they have the nutrition required during this growth stage. You can continue moistening the food with water or replacement milk but start to reduce the ratio of liquid to solid food and allow your dog to get accustomed to the texture of his dry kibbles.
12-Week Old Pitbull At twelve weeks, your pup should be fully used to his dry kibbles and should no longer be needing the assistance of moistened food to help him eat is meals. Feed him multiple times per day and stick to puppy formula. Be mindful of feeding instructions and do not underfeed as this will affect his development. Overfeeding will cause him to develop too quickly and his small body will have trouble adjusting. This can lead to future health issues, including problems with his joints during his later years.

How Gut Damage Happens
The good bacteria living in your dogs intestinal tract form part of the immune system. They create a healthy intestinal mucosal lining. When this lining is damaged, its called leaky gut syndrome.
Poor diet, vaccines, drugs and other toxins can cause leaky gut. So when you give your dog kibble, hes off to a bad start.
In leaky gut, holes in the mucosal lining allow fragments of undigested proteins to enter the blood stream. These particles then travel to the liver for processing. But these proteins dont arrive in their proper amino acid format. So the liver rejects them. Then your dogs body responds with inflammation.
Inflammation is the bodys way of stopping or removing invaders it doesnt recognize. The body tries to expel the foreigners through its circulatory system. Eventually, theyll exit through the skin or via the intestinal tract .
So gut health is essential for liver, skin and digestive health. And because kibble lacks good bacteria, you need to add probiotics to your dogs food.
Fruits And Veggies For Pit Bulldogs
Fruits and veggies are necessary for your adult or puppy pit bulls diet. They are a rich source of fiber that helps with digestion. Fruits and veggies are also beneficial because
- They pack probiotics that promote a healthy gut
- They are rich in vitamins that boost your pups immune system
- They promote healthy skin and coat
- They ensure your dog always has a balanced diet
Some of the tasty veggies you should be feeding your pit bull terrier include
- Sweet potato
- Kiwi fruit
Not all fruits are healthy for your pet bulldogs. Fruits like Cherries contain traces of cyanide which can be harmful to your dogs respiratory system. Also, avoid feeding your dog raisins or grapes because they can cause damage to your dogs kidneys.

What Should I Never Feed My Pitbull
Apart from the obvious dietary items that are off-limits to Pitbull dogs, such as chocolate, garlic, caffeine, and onions, to name a few, it is also critical to examine the labels of every dog food product you purchase for components that may be harmful to them. Fillers are food additives that give dog food its heft. The prevailing wisdom regarding fillers is that they are nutritionally worthless.
Guidelines To Creating Balanced Homemade Dog Food Recipes
Following are guidelines for feeding a raw or cooked home-prepared diet to healthy dogs. No single type of food, such as chicken, should ever make up more than half the diet.
Except where specified, homemade food for dogs can be fed either raw or cooked. Leftovers from your table can be included as long as theyre foods you would eat yourself, not fatty scraps.
Meat and Other Animal Products: Should always make up at least half of the diet. A raw diet for dogs can be excessively high in fat, which can lead to obesity. Another potential hazard of diets containing too much fat: If an owner restricts the amount fed too much, the dog may suffer deficiencies of other required nutrients.
Unless your dog gets regular, intense exercise, use lean meats , remove skin from poultry, and cut off separable fat. Its better to feed dark meat poultry than breast, however, unless your dog requires a very low-fat diet.
Raw Meaty Bones : If you choose to feed them, RMBs should make up one third to one half of the total diet. Use the lower end of the range if you feed bony parts such as chicken necks and backs, but you can feed more if youre using primarily meatier parts such as chicken thighs. Never feed cooked bones. Read a full report on raw meaty bones here.
Boneless Meat: Include both poultry and red meat. Heart is a good choice, as it is lean and often less expensive than other muscle meats.

Why You Should Avoid Synthetic Vitamins
Over time, your dogs cell receptors can become clogged with these fake vitamins and they stop working properly. Excessive synthetic vitamins in the food can even be toxic to your dog.
Fresh, whole food-sourced vitamins are complex. The bodys cells recognize them so they use them much more efficiently than synthetics. But when your dog gets synthetic vitamins in his food, it can even reduce the absorption of healthful, whole-food vitamins.
Minimizing synthetic vitamins and adding whole food vitamins means your dogs body can pick and choose what it needs.
So, to help your dog get extra, absorbable nutrients
Raw Dog Food Or Barf :
best diet is its native oneMEAT
Additionally, many would attest that raw meat is optimal. Unlike humans, dogs are not generally susceptible to things like salmonella and e-coli. You and I might regularly eat raw meat if our systems could handle it – but we need to cook our meat to kill the bacteria that have the potential to devastate our digestive systems.
When meat is cooked, proteins, vitamins, and minerals break down and lose their benefit. Raw meat is also high in moisture – it provides a significant amount of your dog’s daily water requirement . The great majority of your dog’s diet should consist of meat protein – which is the one fool-proof ingredient that we know all dogs can digest and thrive on.
Commercial dog foods contain soy, corn, and wheat – all common allergens for dogs. Raw dog food advocates maintain that all grains should be eliminated from our dogs’ diets. They also cite that grains have been blamed as culprits for pancreatic stress and tooth calculus, that our dogs were not designed to process these items, and that asking them to thrive on grains is like asking a human to thrive on a red meat diet – most experts would advise against it.
Let’s start by discussing what a raw-food dog’s diet should consist of. All meat should, obviously, be uncooked, and may include: Eggs , beef, buffalo, venison, elk, chicken, turkey, emu, ostrich, rabbit, and fish. Small animals, like rabbits and fish, may be fed whole – dogs love it this way.

How Often Should I Feed My Pitbull Puppy
Your Pitbull puppy will require multiple mealtimes per day during this growing stage. After being weaned from moms milk, he should be provided with food three to four times per day. This allows you to deliver small amounts of foods throughout the day to keep feeding times comfortable and prevent him from getting too excited and overeating in one sitting. Feeding this way also allows your puppys digestive system to work optimally, without getting overloaded with too much food at one time.

The Pitbull is not one of the largest breeds out there, but these dogs are all muscle. This, combined with the fact that many Pitbulls are high-energy dogs, means that you need to be very careful when choosing your dogs diet. The ideal diet for an adult Pitbull will be rich in high-quality protein to support the dogs lean muscle mass with moderate fat content for energy and skin/coat health. Like all dogs, Pitbulls can be prone to obesity so you need to tread carefully in walking the line between feeding your dog enough and feeding him too much. Just follow the feeding recommendations on the label and watch your dogs weight and condition. If he gains too much weight youll need to cut back but, if he loses weight or energy, you might need to feed him a little more.
