WE would get sick. Dogs have a short digestive system made to handle raw meat and bones, the bacteria that is present isnt a problem for a healthy dog. Read the books I suggest in the first section, for more detailed information. We balance the meals our dogs eat over a period of time, much like feeding your human family.
Best Raw Food For Dogs
Heres a list of the best raw food you can include in your canines diet:
- Chicken
- Medical history
- Environmental factors
Nonetheless, the general rule of thumb when feeding your dog raw is that you should feed it around 2-4% of its body weight. So, for instance, if your dog weighs 23 kg, you should feed it around 453.59 g. This is only a starting point, closely monitor your dogs weight change.
Mistake No : Feeding Only Raw Meat
Many well-meaning pet guardians are confusing balanced, species-appropriate nutrition with feeding hunks of raw muscle meat to their dog. Although fresh meat is a good source of protein and some minerals, it doesnt represent a balanced diet. Feeding a basic 80/10/10 diet is also nutritionally unbalanced and will cause significant issues over time.
Wild canines eat nearly all the parts of their prey, including small bones, internal organs, blood, brain, glands, hair, skin, teeth, eyes, tongue and other tasty treats. Many of these parts of prey animals provide important nutrients, and in fact, this is how carnivores in the wild nutritionally balance their diets.
An exclusive diet of ground up chicken carcasses, for example, is lacking the minimum requirements for a number of vital nutrients in comparison to a nutritionally complete whole prey item, and falls grossly short of almost all nutrients to meet even AAFCOs minimum nutrient requirements .
These include potassium, iron, copper, manganese, zinc, iodine, selenium and vitamins A, D, E, B12 and choline. The vast majority of prey model diets fall into this category, which is why so many vets are opposed to them they grossly undernourish animals, despite delivering sufficient calories, which is a recipe for disaster over time.

How Much Raw Food To Feed Dogs
You can determine how raw food to feed Fido based on calories needed depending on his weight. The only downside is that you need to know how many calories there are in each ingredient you use and add them up. It can be a cumbersome process if you ask me.
Many raw feeders prefer the bodyweight percentage method because its easy to measure and works with any raw diet.
As a general rule, an adult dog should eat about 2% to 4% of his ideal weight.
However, these percentages vary depending on their weight, metabolism, and activity level.
You have a 4 scenarios to determine how much to feed your dog.
- Weight maintenance: Feed 2% 2.5% of their current weight in pounds per day.
- Active dogs : Feed 3% 4% of their current weight in pounds per day.
- Senior, less active, or overweight dogs : Feed 1.5% 2% of their current weight in pounds per day.
- Underweight dogs : Feed 3% 3.5% % of their current weight in pounds per day.
For instance, if your dog weighs 65 lbs , you would need to multiply the weight by either 2% 2.5%. But, which one do you use?
An inactive dog at his ideal weight would use 2%. For an average activity level dog that receives anywhere from an hour to several hours of exercise a day, 2.25% would be the ideal middle ground. If you feel your dog is more active, then you may need to feed 2.5% or more to maintain a healthy weight.
So, for an active dog at his ideal weight, 65 lbs, your would multiply 2.5%*65 lbs which equals 1.625 lbs.
Homemade Dog Food: Overview
1. Feed your dog a wide variety of foods from different food groups.
2. Make sure you supplement your dogs homemade diet with calcium unless you feed raw meaty bones.
3. Stick to lean meats and remove skin from the poultry you feed unless your dog is highly active.
4. Keep in mind that the less variety of foods you feed, the more important supplements become.
5. Review your homemade dog food diet plan with a veterinarian for approval.
In the past few issues of Whole Dog Journal, I have offered critiques on homemade dog food diets in order to address the dogs health concerns or simply to optimize the dogs diet plan. To do this, I analyzed the cooked and raw homemade dog food diets and compared them to the National Research Councils guidelines for canine nutrition. I want to be clear, though: I dont believe this is a requirement for feeding home-cooked dog food. Just as with the diet you feed yourself and your family, feeding a wide variety of healthy foods in appropriate proportions should meet the needs of most healthy dogs. The best diet for dogs, in effect, is a diverse diet.

Traveling With Raw Food
Feeding your dog healthy raw food takes a little more effort than just throwing down a bowl of kibble. Preparing their daily meal , takes me 10 to 15 minutes. And I do have to do more clean up throughout the process, and after, so I dont get raw meat all over the kitchen. So, its reasonable to expect that taking your dogs new diet on the road is going to take a little more planning, and time, too.
When we leave the dogs at home, with a caretaker, weve just been buying the pre-made patties to make their lives as easy as possible. Ive been keeping a box around just in case were crunched on time, having a bad day, or other real world considerations like that.
What about camping? Well, the Dometic comes along when were car or 4×4 camping, but for a recent backpacking trip I found premade freeze-dried patties to be an ideal solution. Just like human backpacking food, all the weight is sucked out of those, making them ideal on the trail, but theyre easily rehydrated with even cool water in camp. Theyre expensive , but I really appreciated the weight savings, and Wiley enjoyed eating them.
Sourcing Meat From Your Local Butcher
We recommend asking your butcher to mince up the meat for you, to help minimise raw meat on your kitchen worktops.
Give them a call and order the following:
- 8kg of finely ground muscle meat (beef is the most widely available, but if your dog has a suspected beef sensitivity or allergy then opt for another protein
- 1kg finely ground organ meats, including up to 500g of liver and any of the following, heart, kidney, spleen, tripe,
- 1kg of fresh marrow bones (rather than grinding these down yourself, let your dog earn all the nutritional goodness as a treat in the garden. For smaller dogs, you may wish to select smaller bone accordingly and only feed it whilst you are present. You could also opt for some frozen chicken wings instead.
- To this you may want to add 1kg of varied chopped green vegetables, carrots, even some apples and berries
- Simply combine the ingredients, put into freezer bags and defrost accordingly
If you are feeding diy raw dog food as a long term solution, varying proteins is a key health pillar. It will help your dog avoid developing food sensitivities and to ensure a variety of nutrients.

Can Dogs Eat Raw Meat
Yes, dogs can eat raw meat and other raw ingredients. Dogs are true carnivores and can thrive on a raw meat diet.
From DNA studies, we know dogs descended directly from the timber wolf approximately 15,000 years ago1. Wolves are clear carnivores. Geneticallyspeaking, dogs demonstrate similar and noticeable carnivorous traits. Their teeth, digestive system, and behavior account for their meat-eating capabilities.
Dogs do not have flat teeth like humans or animals like cows. They also do not chew their cud from side to side. Canines have narrow pointy back teeth, and their jaws operate in a chop-chop motion like all carnivores. In addition, carnivores do not produce amylase in their salivary glands. Dogs dont produce amylase in their saliva but their pancreas and small intestine2.
Further, dogs have higher concentrations of stomach acid that help break down animal protein faster, and the stronger acids kill bacteria found in decaying meat.
Dr. RuthAnn Lobos, a Purina veterinarian, says feeding a diet consisting primarily of raw meat may not provide the complete and balanced nutrition your dog needs3. If you plan to feed raw meat to your dog, you need to do so as part of a balanced raw meal plan, and any raw meat needs to be fresh and thoroughly washed before feeding it.
What To Say To Your Butcher
It is definitely worth finding a good butcher as it will save you a great deal of time and money. Also, if you live anywhere near a slaughterhouse then it is well worth seeing if they can supply you.
Either way, it is much, much easier if you have plenty of freezer space.
When searching for a butcher, explain what you are doing and ask for:
- scraps
- offal
- mince .
With regard to the scraps and the mince, it is fine for it to have some fat in it, but it shouldnt be too fatty .
So far as inexpensive cuts are concerned, every butcher has their own ideas what these might be. Take skirt, which is the diaphragm under the ribs. Some butchers sell this for next to nothing others know that there is good, lean meat to be had there and charge quite a bit for it. An efficient butcher will find you inexpensive ways to feed your dog.
Note that raw chicken carcasses and backs are perfect for dogs and some people feed their dogs almost nothing else. Chicken wings are also great, a perfect parcel of meat and bone.
Some people feel it is important that the meat they buy for their dogs is suitable for human consumption. Others dont. The truth is the dogs are unlikely to mind if it is a bit smelly and you shouldnt be too obsessed with the best before date.
If youre looking for a convenient supply of ethically sourced meat and bones remember Honeys can supply you. We estimate that our DIY customers save about 33% compared to our complete food customers.

Variety Over Time Can Be Good
As with all other things in life, variety and long-term balance can be good, but it depends.
Generally, dogs do not require as much variety in their diet as humans do they can eat the same food that they really enjoy for very long periods of time.
So if your raw dog food recipes are complete and nutritionally balanced, and your dog loves them, then you can stick to just one.
But it’s best to work with a veterinarian or canine nutritionist on this, and decide whether you’ll need to switch it up now and again.

Check The Labels & Ingredients
While the labels can be confusing, knowing which specific dog food label to find can help narrow down your search. Dog foods labeled Natural are still a good choice. However, make sure to keep an eye on products with 100% organic labeling.
And while youre at it, look for products that are AAFCO approved. Dog foods with this label offer complete and balanced nutrition for a particular life stage according to AAFCOs requirements.
Apart from the labels, its also a must for pet owners to check the ingredients. As a rule of thumb, foods with fewer ingredients are often a better choice.
Quality dog food would list animal protein as part of the first three ingredients. The first ingredients show the foods major components. Those with loads of fillers are potentially problematic, so its best to stay away from those.
When checking the ingredients, take time to check for ingredients that may trigger food allergies.
Some dogs are allergic to proteins like beef, chicken, and eggs. Other dogs are allergic to wheat. If this is the case, your dog is better off munching on salmon or natural grain-free dog food.
How Much Food Does Your Dog Need
Figuring out how much food your dog needs can be a bit of a challenge. Every dog is different and a lot of factors can affect their diet. Generally, adult dogs will need to consume between 2% and 3% of their body weight in raw food each day. You will need to monitor your dog’s habits and lifestyle to narrow that number down further.
If your dog is active and spends most of their time getting exercise, their daily intake will be on the higher end of the spectrum. Alternatively, an older dog or one that lounges around all day will need closer to 2%.
Body condition also plays a role. Look at your dog’s body from above and take note of their shape. If they’re underweight, they’ll need more food to get healthy. If they’re overweight, you need to cut back so that they don’t experience any lasting problems.

Purina Beyond Beef Potato & Green Bean Recipe
Rating: 4.5/5
First 5 Ingredients: Beef, Beef Broth, Chicken, Liver, Potatoes, Green Beans
- Formula change
- One reviewer said that about 25% of the can is liquid
Mixing wet food with your dogs regular dry food adds moisture to its diet and also makes the food even more appealing. If youre on the lookout for the best wet food, you might want to try Purina BEYONDs ground entree canned dog food.
Aside from beef and potato, this canned dog food is also available in various flavors including turkey and sweet potato, and chicken, salmon, and spinach.
Pet parents love how this wet canned food nourished their pet dogs who have allergies and digestive problems. One even added that its also a good dog food option for pups with tooth problems since its soft and easy to chew.
A common complaint, however, is its pate-like consistency. Since this is a ground entree, expect to see mashed meat in the mixture instead of chunks.
