How To Make Organic Dog Food At Home

Why Do Dogs Need Homemade Food

Makers of commercial dog food products may want you to believe otherwise, but feeding your dog with homemade food is actually good for him.

Perhaps the most obvious benefit is that you can personally choose the ingredients to be used in the dog food. This is very critical if your dog has allergies, or you just want to spare him from consuming certain ingredients.

You can also be assured that the food you are giving him is 100% safe. In times when dog food recalls due to possible contamination have become a very common occurrence, you will have peace of mind knowing that the food your dog is eating wont make him sick.

It is also possible to save time and effort when you prepare your dogs food. Preparing foods in large branches would let you do so, as you would be able to freeze smaller portions which you can feed to your dog later on.

Of course, you get to benefit from preparing your dogs food, too. While preparation may take up time, you can save a lot of money in the long run especially if you buy ingredients in bulk.

Complete And Balanced Dog Food Diets

Its important homemade dog food is complete and balanced, meaning it meets all of the dogs nutritional needs. It is not important, however, that every meal be complete and balanced, unless you feed the same meal every day with little or no variation.

Home-prepared dog diets that include a wide variety of foods fed at different meals rely on balance over time, not at every meal. Similar to the way humans eat, as long as your dog gets everything he needs spread out over each week or two, his diet will be complete and balanced.

A human nutritionist would never expect someone to follow a single recipe with no variation, as veterinary nutritionists routinely do. Instead, a human would be given guidelines in terms of food groups and portion sizes. As long as your dog doesnt have a health problem that requires a very specific diet, homemade dog food should be the same way.

Keep in mind that puppies are more susceptible to problems caused by nutritional deficiencies or excesses than adult dogs are. Large-breed puppies are particularly at risk from too much calcium prior to puberty. See Puppy Food: Nutritional Guidelines to Maximize Health, for more on puppy nutrition.

Frozen Yogurt Pops For Dogs

If your dog loves to chase ice cubes around the kitchen, then hell love these frozen treats. Theyre made from human-grade ingredients and include fruit juice and carrots, which give your pup an added vitamin boost. Yogurt has calcium and protein and can help your dog digest food.

Note that this recipe calls for non-fat yogurt, which is a much healthier alternative to other types of yogurt, especially if your dog is overweight.

  • 6-oz. container of plain, non-fat frozen yogurt
  • 1 cup of no-sugar-added fruit juice
  • 1/2 cup of carrots, minced

  • Add the yogurt, fruit juice, and carrots into a medium-size bowl. Stir until the ingredients are smooth and well-blended.
  • Drop the mixture into the ice cube trays by the spoonful.
  • Freeze until the ingredients are solid.
  • Pro tip: Use hard plastic trays instead of softer rubber ones to make the treats. The treats are easier to remove from a hard tray.

    Homemade Dog Food Recipes

What would you prefer? A TV dinner, or a homemade stew made by Mom herself? Most of us have eaten both, and have a preference. I can’t speak for your mother’s cooking ability, but chances are, she can do a bit better than a frozen brick of kinda-food. This example may make it easier to empathize with your dog when you fill his bowl with nuggets of processed corn meal and he glances up your way that saying, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Or, maybe your best buddy is more than willing to scarf down anything that hits the bowl. In that case, you might want to ask yourself, “Is conventional dog food the best thing for him?” Your dinner choices might be a no-brainer, but choosing the best option for your pet isn’t always that easy. He’s relying on you to make the healthiest, and most enjoyable, choices for him.

How To Make Your Own Natural Dog Food

Geez, Mom, this again? Thats the look my dogs give me if Ive fed them kibble for several days in a row, and I dont blame them. If youve selected the right dog food, your pup will benefit from high-quality ingredients but they are certainly far from fresh. And imagine if you were forced to eat the same meal day after day do you really think youd be fulfilling all your nutritional requirements? No, we eat a wide variety of foods to meet our needs, and your dog needs that too.

One way to give your dog the benefit of fresh foods and provide variety is to make the food yourself. Its easier than you think. All you need is three ingredients a protein, a carbohydrate, and a vegetable. Roughly, youll want 1/3 of proteins to 2/3 of vegetables and carbs. Heres one simple recipe to get you started.

1/3 Organic Skinless Chicken Breast1/3 Organic Brown Rice1/3 Organic Green Beans

Bake the chicken breast until juices run clear. Boil the beans until they are fully-cooked. And make the brown rice according to the package. Then shred the chicken into bite-size pieces for your dog, and mix all the ingredients together. If your dog seems uncertain about this new meal, you can try throwing it in the food processor and feeding the puree. Save the leftovers in the fridge for later in the week. You can reheat or just feed it cold. Your dog will like it either way!

Our Favorite Homemade Dog Food Recipes For Senior Dogs

A healthy, nutrient-rich diet is important for any dog, regardless of age. However, for senior dogs, its even more essential. Being mindful of what and how much your older pooch eats can go a long way in helping to manage common issues associated with dog aging, includingobesity. There are lots of high-quality, specialty dog foods available and Ive had great success with some of them but they can be expensive. Making your own dog food is a more affordable alternative to commercial versions and youll be able to control what goes into it. If youre concerned about your pooch missing out on nutrients, adding supplements can be helpful too.

Be sure to keep any food allergies or dietary restrictions in mind and talk with your vet before starting your dog on a diet of homemade food, particularly if they suffer from any health conditions. You might also need to adjust the ratio of protein to grains and veggies to accommodate your dogs needs. With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite homemade dog food recipes for older dogs that contain tasty, safe ingredients.

Essential Fatty Acids In Cat And Dog Food

Both dogs and cats require omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the diet because they cannot produce these essential fatty acids on their own. For those of you interested in the scientific nitty-gritty, essential fatty acids and their numeric formulas are listed in the table below.

Deficiency of omega-6 fatty acids can cause skin and coat abnormalities, reproductive problems, and failure to thrive. The omega-3 essential fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid , eicosapentaenoic acid , and docosahexaenoic acid . EPA and DHA are found primarily in marine sources, including fish oil as well as phytoplankton and other marine plants.

Kafkas Organic includes Omega-3 Fish Oil naturally derived from Anchovies, as well as Organic Flaxseed Oil rich in Omega-3 levels. Safflower Oil contains high levels of Omega-6 Oils.

A Meal For You And Your Dog

Love cooking for your dog but never have the time? Rocky Kanaka from The CWs SAVE our SHELTER, Dog’s Day Out and founder of The Dog Bakery, has a solution. This easy to make salmon meal for yourself can also be made for your dog.

This recipe is designed for those who want to eat healthy and want their dogs to eat healthy as well but are always on the go. This is also one of the most eco friendly recipes we have seen. Instead of tossing things we would usually not eat such as broccoli stems, the recipe uses these as a key part to the dogs delicious meal.

This recipe also has a bonus tip on what to do with that salmon skin that is usually thrown in the trash. I get asked a lot if salmon skin is okay for dogs. While it is not safe if consumed raw, due to unwanted parasites, cooking in the oven for 20 minutes to make a crunchy, healthy, limited ingredient, organic, high omega dog snack that may help with heart health and give them a great skin and coat is a big win! says Rocky.

And there is more, when you cook for your dog you are more conscious of what you put in your body. For all of those reasons and more we give this recipe four paws up!

Healthy meals are important for you and your dog but the best thing about this recipe from Rocky Kanaka is it allows you to take time out of your day to spend time with your family two and four legged! Read on to find out how to do it or watch Rocky has he demonstrates!

Is A Vegan Dog Food Diet Healthy For My Pet

    organic home cooked dog food

As a reader, youll need to keep an open mind here! You already know many of those essential nutrients in a dogs diet are found more often in meat.

Dogs evolved from an animal that mostly ate from animal sources. Their teeth are designed to grab and tear at animal products, not grind plants like ours. Each of their three main senses evolved over thousands of years to track prey efficiently.

They still can thrive off of the proper vegan diet!

Vegetarian and vegan diets can be done for dogs, but in the process you have to be very, very careful.

In my opinion, help of a veterinarian or nutritionist is mandatory in this case.

Why We Switched To Homemade Dog Food

Recently, I shared a blog post about our dog’s health issues and why we decided to make the switch to a diet that is made up of 100% human grade food.

In our experience, the switch was easy, cost effective, and so much healthier for our dogs than a traditional doggie diet of processed kibble! The homemade dog food recipe that I make for our dogs combines lean ground sirloin, wholesome brown rice, fresh vegetables, hard boiled eggs, and tender herbs. This healthy, vibrant alternative to traditional dog food has given our 11 year old dog, Hooch, a new lease on life!

Since making the switch 8 months ago I have been so inspired by the improvements we have seen in Hooch! It’s pushed me to continue to research different ingredients that might help even more. I’m excited to share my first Homemade Dog Food Seasoning blend with you and your pup! I really hope you will benefit as much as we have.

What Are The Benefits Of Homemade Dog Food

Homemade Dog Food.~ EASY, HEALTHY and CHEAP!

Homemade dog food can benefit your canine companion in a number of ways especially if you have a pet who suffers from allergies, skin problems, or gastrointestinal sensitivity.

Highly-processed foods also tend to lose nutritional value, whereas making dog food from scratch maintains more of the vital nutrients during the cooking process. With fresh food, you know exactly what your dog is getting versus reading the label and being confused by all the included additives and preservatives.

How Much And When Should You Feed Your Dog

This will vary from dog to dog, but a general rule of thumb is for every 10 lbs your dog weighs they should be fed roughly 1 cup of prepared food.

For our 80 lb Hooch, that means 2 meals a day each containing 4 cups of food. It is important to note that, dogs with kidney problems often feel better when fed several small meals throughout the dayrather than just one or two large meals, so you may find that you need to adjust your feeding schedule as time goes on accordingly to keep your pup comfy!
