Influencing Factors On Determining Feed Amount

  • Activity Level
  • Adjustments for weight gain or weight loss
  • Life Stage
  • Activity level

Be honest with this assessment. Is your dog mostly a lounger that hangs out inside all day with a few backyard jaunts or is it a truly active dog like a sporting breed that hunts, a working dog like a police K9 or your pal that goes hiking with you multiple times a week for hours on end?

Human tendency is to over emphasize/assess activity levels.

Adjustments for weight gain or weight loss

Simply put, does your dog need to lose weight? Gain weight? Maintain? The answer to those questions will help you figure out which end of that 2-3% spectrum you want to start with when starting a raw food diet.

    Life stage

Notice I said adult dogs when referring to the 2-3% of body weight for food amounts. Puppies are an entirely different story as theyre quickly growing and need more calories to support that growth.

There are two approaches for feeding puppies:

    • 2-3% of their expected adult weight
    • 5-6% of their current puppy weight adjusting with the dog as it grows

Senior dogs shouldnt have drastically different needs than a middle-aged dog unless of course, activity level impacts them.

Pregnant dogs are something you should speak to your vet about in determining the best amount of raw food to support a healthy pregnancy.

Its a 30 minute weekly commitment that has made both her and I incredibly happy.

A multivitamin supplement can help cover your pups nutritional bases and fill any gaps, Hansen says. She likes BalanceIT canine, a powdered supplement that you can sprinkle over your dogs food.

Your vet can help you decide whether its worth adding other supplements, too. Probiotics could help promote healthy digestion and support your dogs immune system, while omega-3s might be a good option for dogs that dont eat fatty fish. And if your dog is older and has hip or joint issues, he might benefit from glucosamine and chondroitin.

What Do I Do If My Dog Doesnt Like The Food I Make

Yorkies are unlike most other dogs in that they can be very finicky eaters. Their stomachs are also more sensitive than other breeds, so, unfortunately, there is a chance that your dog will not like the food that you give him or her. The best way to deal with this is to make a smaller batch of dog food so that youre not wasting ingredients or spending too much time on a meal that your pup will not like. If your dog doesnt like the first batch of food, simply try a different recipe.

    Can You Add Fruit

Absolutely! Fruit has a lot of nutrients that are great for dogs. Just don’t go overboard with it. We often use what is in season or what we have in the freezer. We like to use some kind of berries – strawberries or blueberries are best. Do NOT use grapes as they are very bad for dogs. You can add fruit before or after cooking, just beware that if you cook with blueberries, your dog food will turn purple

The Importance Of Complete And Balanced

Homemade DIY Dog Food (How to make your own healthy dog food)

Dog food must be complete and balanced to provide your pup the necessary ingredients she needs to maintain proper health.

To make that hypothetical chicken and rice dinner suitable for your dog, you may have to add an ingredient like bone meal to boost the dishs calcium content, as well as other items to ensure the dog gets enough vitamins and minerals, Goldstein said. Pet parents can add supplementary items individually or buy a pre-made vitamin and mineral mix to stir into the food.

Another key to a successful homemade dog diet is consistency. If youre changing the food each day, it will be harder to ensure the meals are balanced, said Goldstein.

Morgan, takes a different approach, preferring to rotate things so that if there is an imbalance, it can be made up for somewhere else. Talk to your veterinarian about which option is best for your dogs diet and your budget.

    Canning Your Own Dog Food

It is pretty easy to make and can your own dog food. You can use any kind meat you want, beef, chicken, venison, elk, fish, I have even used ham. I dont do a lot of ham, and the ones I do are what we raised, butchered and cured ourselves so I know they dont have a lot of salt or nitrites. Most of the time I will use the older meat when we put a new beef in the freezer, I will use last years meat. And if I have some meat that is a little freezer burned I will use it. You can also get chicken hearts and livers form the store to use.

I try to keep the ratios 60% meat, 20% vegetables, and 20 % grains.

You can use most any vegetables except onions, corn and garlic.

Your grains can be rice, wheat, quinoa, oats, beans, and barley. I mostly use rice since it is easy to come by and fairly inexpensive. The grains need to be cooked before canning.

I have seen some people who cook everything then grind it all together before canning. I dont like doing this since the FDA doesnt recommend canning high density foods like that since you cant be sure the center gets hot enough. If you are wanting to grind everything together you can just cook it like a meatloaf then put in the freezer.

When canning dog food I try to follow the same rules as canning people food. I use to do a lot of stuff not recommended by the FDA, and I do still a few things. But as I learn more and more, for some things I just figure there isnt any point in taking a chance.

How Much You Need To Feed Your Pooch

This is something I hate determining because, of course, my dog is going to beg for food and act like hes starving even after he sneakily devours the cat food.

So how do you know your poochs pouch is full?

Canine Journal has a great graphic to help you determine your dogs needs.

However, youll want to double-check with your vet to make sure your dog is getting everything it needs.

Is It Okay To Swap Out Ingredients

Just like experimenting with the recipe, swapping out ingredients is a bad idea. There are certain foods that your dog cant eat or might have trouble digesting. Even an innocent-seeming swap can totally throw off the whole recipe and possibly even make the food dangerous for your animal. Stick to the recipe in its entirety.

An easy recipe and guidelines for making homemade raw dog food that you can tweak as necessary to what best fits your dog.

For as health conscious as I am about what kind of foods I put in my own body, I have to admit for the better part of six of her seven years, I pretty much fed Ginger the equivalent of fast food to humans.

Sure, it was the good fast food but after awhile, even Chick-Fil-A isnt healthy any more if you know what I mean.

Of course, occasionally I made her homemade pumpkin dog treats but more often than not her food was anything but homemade.

Then one day earlier this year it was like a switch got flipped.

The guy who sold us our water softener system was sitting in our kitchen and as Ulysses looked over models trying to figure out which one made the most sense, the sales guy and I started talking about dog food.

He explained how he starting feeding a raw food diet for his dogs and how their energy levels were through the roof , their coats were shinier than ever and their teeth in great shape.

    It made sense.

I completely buy into the same theories from a human perspective, why wouldnt it be the same for dogs?

So, next trip to Petco, I was forking over some serious money for frozen raw dog food patties and giving this whole thing a shot.

The first meal I gave her the homemade raw dog food, she came running back into the kitchen after licking the bowl clean as if she was begging for more.

Adding Yogurt To My Dogs Homemade Food Will Cover His Needs For Calcium

Dogs actually require very high levels of calcium and adding yogurt to your homemade dog food recipe probably wont cut it. Consider this a 75-pound dog requires about 2,000mgs of calcium per day, or 14,000mgs per week. A diet of turkey, ground lamb, liver, sardines, brown rice, and squash provides about 1,750mgs of calcium. This means that you need to provide an additional 12,000mgs per week which equates to about 40 cups of yogurt it is extremely unlikely that your dog will eat that much yogurt in a week and, even if he did, it would put him over his daily recommended calorie intake.

Many dog food recipes fall short in certain nutrients, especially iron, copper, calcium, and zinc. Even some recipes created by veterinarians don’t measure up. The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine tested 200 recipes, many written by vets. The researchers found most of the recipes were short on some essential nutrients.

The best way to make sure a recipe has what it takes is to choose one created by an expert with training in dog nutrition, says Jennifer Larsen, DVM, PhD. That might be a certified pet nutritionist or a PhD-trained animal nutritionist with experience making pet food. Your vet should be able to point you in the right direction.

Your pet needs protein , fat and carbohydrates . They also need calcium , and essential fatty acids .

And if that’s not enough to consider, if your dog has a health problem, they may need a special diet. You may need a pet nutrition expert to create custom recipes.
