The Farmers Dog ships frozen, allowing you to keep it on hand or serve it every day as a regular meal. This food is made with fresh, healthy and easy-to-pronounce human-grade ingredients. And you can spend your time on more important things, like belly rubs and walks.

The Digestive System Of A Canine

There is a significant difference in the way dogs and humans digest food. The shape of the human jaw and the salivary enzymes helps to break the food in the mouth. The jaw and mouth of the dog are made to tear and crush and their salivary enzymes are designed to kill bacteria. This is why the dog is able to digest the food that humans cannot.

The food travels fast down the esophagus of the dog and this enters its stomach in chunks where the digestion happens. The acids in the stomach of the canine are stronger than that of humans so it can digest food fast. In normal cases, the food reaches from the mouth to the intestine in 10 hours and this produces a firm and hard stool.

However, many things can disrupt the digestive system of the dog and cause loose stool. Something may not be serious like eating grass but if the dog eats stone or has a disease like cancer that causes chronic diarrhea then this is serious.

Homemade Chicken Dinner For Dogs

As you have learned from the earlier recipes, dogs cant get enough of chicken. This explains why we are using this poultry again for this simple dinner for our canine friends. Moreover, this simple DIY food for dogs makes use of vegetables like cabbage and spinach. You will also use apples to make this recipe.

You can also swap out some of the veggies used in this recipe, like carrots for red cabbage. But you should cook carrots if you decide to use them because the orange veggies arent the easiest foods for dogs to digest.

Ingredients:

  • 5 whole eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

It is up to you what type of chicken to use. You can use whole chicken which includes the heart, liver, and neck. Of you can settle for boneless skinless chicken breast, or frozen chicken breast which is best when cooked.

Step by step guide:

  • Chop up the chicken and put in a suitable sized pot. Bring it to a boil.
  • Reduce to a simmer then add the remaining ingredients. Let it simmer until the chicken is done.
  • Remove the pot from the stove. Add the eggs and olive oil once it is cool then stir.

You can keep the leftover in an airtight container and then put this in the refrigerator. The meal should be safe enough for your dogs consumption up to five days.

As for the serving, you can give a large dog up to 2 ½ cups of this food which should last for 2 days.

How Much And When Should You Feed Your Dog

This will vary from dog to dog, but a general rule of thumb is for every 10 lbs your dog weighs they should be fed roughly 1 cup of prepared food.

For our 80 lb Hooch, that means 2 meals a day each containing 4 cups of food. It is important to note that, dogs with kidney problems often feel better when fed several small meals throughout the dayrather than just one or two large meals, so you may find that you need to adjust your feeding schedule as time goes on accordingly to keep your pup comfy!

The Trouble With Tiny Mouths

It is not uncommon for vets to see many small dogs with dental problems due to their tiny mouths. This is because when teeth are crowded into a small space, it becomes especially difficult to provide them with a good cleaning and increases their risk of plaque and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, will end up getting worse and worse until the painful and infected teeth lose their anchoring then they will either fall out or need to be removed by your vet.

This is typically why vets try to encourage proper dental care and regular teeth cleanings when it comes to smaller breeds. You can also find that using a finger toothbrush or a dental swipe can help you care for your dogs teeth right from the comfort of your own home. Next time you visit your local vet, try asking about a comprehensive prevention plan and for doggy dental care that you can do at home.

How To Grind Up Dog Food

Whether you’re dealing with a puppy or a senior canine citizen, sometimes it might be necessary to grind up her kibble. Puppies who are very young or are losing their baby teeth might find it hard to gnaw on hard chunks of kibble. Dogs at the other end of the age spectrum might be losing their teeth, too or may start having digestive issues that make it difficult to digest dry food if it isn’t chewed thoroughly enough. Whenever you find the need to grind up your dog’s kibble, you can pulverize it easily enough using basic kitchen appliances.

Influencing Factors On Determining Feed Amount

Preparing A Dog’s Dinner By Soaking Their Food
  • Activity Level
  • Adjustments for weight gain or weight loss
  • Life Stage
  • Activity level

Be honest with this assessment. Is your dog mostly a lounger that hangs out inside all day with a few backyard jaunts or is it a truly active dog like a sporting breed that hunts, a working dog like a police K9 or your pal that goes hiking with you multiple times a week for hours on end?

Human tendency is to over emphasize/assess activity levels.

Adjustments for weight gain or weight loss

Simply put, does your dog need to lose weight? Gain weight? Maintain? The answer to those questions will help you figure out which end of that 2-3% spectrum you want to start with when starting a raw food diet.

    Life stage

Notice I said adult dogs when referring to the 2-3% of body weight for food amounts. Puppies are an entirely different story as theyre quickly growing and need more calories to support that growth.

There are two approaches for feeding puppies:

    • 2-3% of their expected adult weight
    • 5-6% of their current puppy weight adjusting with the dog as it grows

Senior dogs shouldnt have drastically different needs than a middle-aged dog unless of course, activity level impacts them.

Pregnant dogs are something you should speak to your vet about in determining the best amount of raw food to support a healthy pregnancy.

Making her homemade raw dog food has just become a part of the weekly routine now.

Its a 30 minute weekly commitment that has made both her and I incredibly happy.
