Make sure your entire household is on board with weight loss plans for your pet, especially if feeding the dog is a shared responsibility.

You can decrease your dogs meal serving by ¼ cup per day for weight loss. Alternatively- you can calculate kcals for your dog for a more exact serving suggestion.

Use a feeding chart to ensure the household only feeds the dog once at meal time. Dogs can be very convincing at telling you they havent eaten in days.

Always use a measuring cup when dishing out your dogs meal portions. If your dog is overweight, replace the cup with a smaller measuring scoop so the portion of food served is smaller.

Sneaking the dog treats or food scraps is not doing your dog any favors. Substitute food rewards with praise and physical petting. Dogs love having their cheeks scratched. Tell your dog in a sing song voice what a good girl or boy s/he is.

Healthiest Homemade Dog Food with Chicken (Very Simple to Make)

So how much should you feed your dog for each meal? To answer that well need to dive in and do some quick calorie math.

Lets use my dog Ella as an example. Shes a chihuahua mix that weighs 11 pounds. She eats 1/4 cup of dry food twice a day.

We use Taste of the Wild which has about 360 calories per cup. The average cup of dry dog food has about 400 calories so this example should work for just about anyone.

So, back to Ella, she eats 1/2 a cup a day of dry food which is about 180 calories .

One 3.5 ounce boiled chicken breast has 284 calories. We made 3 in the example above so thats 852 calories of cooked chicken.

A 1/2 cup of cooked white rice boiled in chicken broth has about 113 calories. In our example above we boiled 2 cups of dry rice which usually turns into 3 times that cooked or 6 cups of cooked rice.

6 cups of rice boiled in broth comes out to about 678 calories.

678 calories of rice mixed with 852 calories of shredded chicken comes out to 1530 total calories.

So, if I was trying to match how much ella would need at each meal so she isnt gaining or losing weight Id need to figure out 180 calories of chicken and rice for each meal.

Based on the numbers above the 1530 calories of chicken and rice would provide about 8.5 meals. Lets be indulgent and call it 8 so she gets a bit more. She is sick in this example.

How Do You Get Your Dog To Switch To A Homemade Dog Food

Most dogs will gladly give up their kibble or canned food if given the option of eating real food.

But some dogs do initially withdraw from a bowl full of chicken, rice, and vegetables, and owners must occasionally jump through a few hoops to get their dog to make the switch.

One good way to start is by simply providing your dog with his normal kibble or canned food, but with a bit of real, home-cooked food on top.

For example, you may want to scatter some shredded chicken or a drizzle of olive oil on top. Slowly, over the course of about a week or two, youll want to gradually replace some of his kibble with a little more natural food.

And this is also a good idea for dogs who will willingly switch.

If you go from a 100% kibble diet to a 100% home-cooked diet abruptly, you are probably going to stress out your dogs digestive system, causing diarrhea and gas.

But again, most dogs love home-cooked, all-natural dog foods, and quickly and readily make the switch.
