How To Get Puppy To Eat Dry Food

How Much And When Should You Feed Your Dog

How to get a dog to eat dry dog food

This will vary from dog to dog, but a general rule of thumb is for every 10 lbs your dog weighs they should be fed roughly 1 cup of prepared food.

For our 80 lb Hooch, that means 2 meals a day each containing 4 cups of food. It is important to note that, dogs with kidney problems often feel better when fed several small meals throughout the dayrather than just one or two large meals, so you may find that you need to adjust your feeding schedule as time goes on accordingly to keep your pup comfy!

Give Fresh Dog Food A Go

Theres a newer, increasingly popular addition to the array of dog food options: fresh dog food. For example, Ollie offers human-grade food, made with natural ingredients like chicken, beef, carrots, lamb, and blueberries. The recipes are devised by veterinary nutritionists, are cooked to retain maximum nutrients, and held to the highest safety standards. Then meals are packaged in insulated boxes and delivered directly to your door.

Research has shown that dogs need a balance of meat and vegetables. As important, a dogs diet needs to suit their age, activity level, and general health. Rather than having to mix and match various types of food, Ollie has dog owners answer a few questions about their dog and then devises a customized meal plan, including the ingredients and amount of food your dog will receive in each meal.

There are many benefits to fresh food aside from convenience:

Fresh food combines convenience with quality, nutrition, and safety. That does come with a price range of about two to twelve dollars a day, depending on your dogs size and how many meals they consume per day. So thats another factor to consider when deciding on dog food.

Starting at just $2 a day, Ollie is offering 60% off your first trial box for AKC readers, plus it always ships free. .

Remove Your Dogs Meal Until Tomorrow

Okay, so while this method may seem mean, many owners of fussy eaters swear by its success.

It starts by offering your dog food for dinner as you normally would.

During this time, leave the room and do not interact with your pup. If your dog follows you, ignore him.

If your dog has not eaten his meal within the 15 minutes, take his food away.

Now you are going to wait until the next morning. Its time to offer your dog his meal as breakfast.

Make sure its a fresh meal dont offer kibble that was left sitting out overnight.

If your dog once again has not eaten his meal within 15 minutes, take it away.

Once dinner time rolls around, your dog will have gone a whole day without eating. By this time, your dog will be getting quite hungry and realize that he isnt getting anything else.

You dog will be left with one choice:

To eat his food!

This method works because no healthy dog will starve itself. Your pup will gladly eat a meal that he doesnt enjoy if there is no alternative it beats a grumbling tummy!

Oh, and dont worry about your dog going hungry. Generally, most dogs can go a few days without eating.

Tip #1 The Food Shall Be Prepared And Presented In Your Finest Linen

Kidding! But not really. I learned this trick from a co-worker of mine when I was having trouble getting my dog to eat their dry food. Shout out Caitlynn!

Your dog doesnt find it appealing when you simply dump out a scoop of kibbles into their bowl and expect them to eat it.

What I found out works best for my dog is that I put the food in her bowl and then I act as if Im doing something special to it to enhance the flavor. Keyword being ACT!

You have to sell it, or your dog wont believe you.

Selling it can include:

  • Stirring it with a spoon
  • Sticking it in the microwave
  • Sticking it in the oven
  • Pretend to season it to perfection
  • Blow their food

The goal is to do anything you can think of to make a presentation for your dog.

After I add the food to her bowl, I take a spoon and stir her dry food around for about a minute. Then, I grab some food seasoning from my cabinet and pretend that I am seasoning the food just for her.

Make sure that your dog is watching you chef it all up while their food bowl is in your hand.

After that, I put the bowl in the oven or microwave and just act like shes got something special coming her way. When I pull the food out, I simply blow it for a few seconds and eyeball the food to make it seem like it has to be just right.

When I am doing all of that she simply stares at me with her tail wagging back and forth, her mouth drooling, and her eyes just eager with excitement because she cant wait to taste what I have prepared.

Puppy Mush To The Rescue

Puppy mush is a soft, porridge-like food made from puppy formula and dry dog food. Its easy to digest and nutrient-rich, making it the perfect food for puppies during the weaning process. Your puppy will not nurse as much from their mom or be bottle-fed once you start to wean them.

My Puppy Isnt Eating What Should I Do

While most puppies will rapidly scoff down whatever food you give them, some can be very fussy eaters. Not eating regularly, or at all, can be the symptom of a larger health problem, so you should see your vet and rectify this before turning to the food and your puppys eating habits.

Failing to eat due to illness is normally accompanied by lethargy and a change in behaviour, but not always. You may be able to check for bad teeth, growths, sores or foreign objects in the mouth or throat, but your vet has the tools and know-how to find and diagnose these things faster, as well as take the necessary actions or prescribe the essential medication to help your puppy recover. Furthermore, if your dog is not showing any external symptoms, but is still refusing to eat, vomiting up their food, or suffering from prolonged diarrhoea, then it could be something internal. Dont try to solve the problem yourself go to your vet to give your puppy the best chance of a speedy recovery.

Assuming your vet has given your puppy a clean bill of health, the next thing to examine is the atmosphere in your home, especially the area where your puppy eats. Try to keep this a quiet space and relatively free of too much foot traffic. While most dogs dont mind other people being near them while they eat, if your puppy isnt eating, this could be the reason.

How Should You Start Feeding Dry Food

Weaning your puppy will not be an easy task because they are used to milk. However, once you get the hang of how to wean, you will have an easy 4-5 weeks of weaning.

The process is straightforward. Always combine the dry food with warm water or milk.

Again, nobody wants to be fed cold porridge. If the food you are weaning the puppy onto was in the freezer or fridge, take it out on time and let it thaw before adding the liquid to it.

Weaning takes 4-5 weeks, as we mentioned. Every week has its guidelines for successful weaning. In the first week, combine one part of dry food with three portions of liquid. Let the dry food soak for a while, then mash the mixture using a spoon until you achieve a mushy consistency.

The first weeks mash needs to be extra liquid because the puppy is just being introduced to a new meal. Doing this ensures that there are little resistance and stomach upsets.

In the second week, increase the amount of dry food by a portion and decrease the liquid by a part such that they are equal. The mush will be less consistent, but the puppy will get used to it.

You dont have to increase the whole portion in one day. You can do it gradually until you get to an entire part by the end of the week.

In the following weeks, you will increase the amount of dry food as you reduce the liquid until the puppy adjusts to dry food.

You can move slow with the proportions if you realize that your puppy is having digestion problems and diarrhea or vomiting.
