Stop Giving Your Dog Scraps
Does your dog prefer to shun his food in favor of table scraps? Unfortunately, this is a problem that you need to take responsibility for and fix.
When a dog gets to taste from our table, hes exposed to tastes that are far more versatile than his everyday dry kibbles. Once he realizes this, he will turn his nose up at his own meals and wait for something more exciting. To avoid this, you need to stop giving your pup table leftovers as this will only reinforce his behavior.
Besides it being a bad habit, feeding your dog foods with unbalanced nutrition can cause him to gain unhealthy weight and he might miss essential nutrients. Also, remember that some common people foods can be very poisonous to dogs.
In the beginning, your dog may exhibit obvious signs of displeasure when you refuse to give in to his begging and feed him from the table, and he may stubbornly refuse to eat his food, hoping that youll give in.
In that case, dont worry and dont give up. As long as your dog is a healthy adult, he should be fine to skip a meal or two. Once he realizes that your food is off-limits, he will have no choice other but to eat his own food again.
Likewise, be sure not to give him too many treats since this can ruin his desire for regular dog food as well.
If Your Dog Only Eats Human Food She May Have Partial Anorexia
If a dog only eats human food, he or she may experience partial anorexia and not receive the nutrients he or she requires to stay healthy. Untreated, it can result in more serious health issues. If you discover that your dog is only eating human food, you should take her to the veterinarian for a checkup.

Heat Up Your Dogs Food
Heating up your dogs food increases its smell and palatability. Sick dogs will have a hindered sense of smell and taste. Food that has been warmed up may smell more fragrant and can help entice your dog to eat it. This will also help with taste which will encourage your dog to continue eating after that first bite.

Make Sure Hes Healthy
If your dog normally eats his food with gusto and has suddenly stopped eating, the most important thing to do is rule out any serious health problems. Many dogs wont eat if theyre not feeling well, especially if theyre suffering from intestinal or dental issues, so you should visit your veterinarian to make sure nothings wrong. But if your dog eats other kinds of food and refuses to touch his dry food, it may mean hes a picky eater.
Preparation Of Our Homemade Diet
All of the information above might seem intimidating, but I assure you that making the actual meals for our dogs takes no more than 20 minutes of actual hands-on time.
First, we cook our complex carbs, whether theyre grains, legumes, or starchy vegetables.
While that pot is simmering on the stove, we cook the meat in a separate pan in coconut oil and ground turmeric. After its cooled a bit, we add chunks of meat to our food processor and pulse until theyre broken down into 1/2- to 1-inch pieces.
Then, we gather whatever vegetables or fruits we have in the kitchen , chop them up as needed, and toss them into the food processor.
We also add a few clean, crushed eggshells to the mix. A few pulses turns all this food into smaller pieces, making them more digestible for our dogs.
Finally, we add the cooled, cooked carbs to the food processor and do a couple more pulses to combine. Everything should have a finely crumbled texture by this point.
Since dogs have short digestive tracts, its crucial that you break down the food to increase its bioavailability that is, making all the nutrients in those wholesome ingredients more digestible in a dogs system.
I prepare enough food to last my two pugs an entire week. Its unbelievably easy, and I like knowing exactly what goes into their food. Friends will watch us feed our pugs and remark that it looks good enough for them to eat!

Stick To A Feeding Schedule
While were on the subject, most dogs are okay with just two meals a day. If your dog hasnt touched his food for more than 30 minutes, remove the bowl until the next feeding. That way, he will learn that there are certain times when he can eat.
Its also possible that your dog prefers not to eat his breakfast in the morning. This is why I highly suggest giving smaller meals, several times throughout the day. If youre a busy pet parent, an automatic pet feeder is an ideal way to set up feeding schedules and meal portions ahead of time.
Too Much Excitement Going On
When dogs are too overstimulated or excited, their appetite may go out of the window because they just can’t seem to relax enough to focus on eating.
I used to have a puppy over for boarding and training who was super happy to be let out of her crate overnight and all she wanted to do was greet us and play. When we offered her food, she would sniff it and then look for something else to do!
If we presented the food again, she would mouth it and then spit it. However, she would then eat in the late morning-early afternoon once she was calmer and more relaxed.
If your dog would rather sleep by his food than eat it, you know something is amiss.

Should I Get Some Different Food To Entice My Dog To Eat Or Leave It Be While I Work With The Vet
My dog has become an increasingly picky eater, with us having to cater to various whims to get him to eat. However, on Sunday we had to coax, cajole, and beg him to eat, and then on Monday he refused to eat his kibble.
He had no other outward signs of being ill. He still ate treats, he still played tug like crazy, still loved going on walks and pulling me around when I’d let him. No vomiting, diarrhia,
Yesterday I took him to the vet, and the vet gave him metronidazole and a shot cerenia. He advised me that if he wasn’t better by Thursday to bring him back for tests.
Last night, he ate about half of his normal night time kibble.
Today he has seemed a bit more muted then normal. He’s not playing as hard, and he hasn’t touched his breakfast. He has spurts of energy…he jumped all over my wife this morning, he pulled my father around on their walk, etc, but when it’s quiet he just wants to lounge about with someone on the couch.
Obviously, we are going back to the vet first thing in the morning.
My question is this: should I try broth or a different food to try to get him to eat, or should I leave the food alone so it is a control to see how he is feeling/doing?
Information of about pet:
Signalment: Dog, 2 years old, neutered, GSD/Catahoula, 85lbs
History: Rescue, been with me about 5 months, despite all other training being fantastic I can’t stop him from eating things. We did go to a pond at one point recently as well.
Clinical signs: not eating, now lethargy after
Dont Give Him Any Scraps
When you regularly give your dog scraps, it results in him being a picky eater. Once your dog gets used to resourceful foods and varied tastes, hes likely to start disliking his own food.
Constantly giving your dog scraps will also result in unhealthy diets and insufficient nutrients. Not all thats healthy for you is healthy for your dog.
Along that note, some foods that you enjoy can be poisonous to dogs. This unhealthy routine might also result in your dog beginning to develop obesity.
Once you stop giving your dog scraps, the process will be a little difficult but quite necessary. Your dog will certainly show signs of disapproval and might even try to beg or trick you innocently to give him scraps.
You might find your dog refusing to eat his own food in objection. Your dog can go the whole day on a meal or two only and thats quite okay.
In any case, you shouldnt give in. Once your dog sees that theres no other option, hell realize he has to eat his own food.

Reasons To Feed Your Dog Naturally
Naturally, dogs feed from the ground, which is a flat surface. This gives them the opportunity to move around their food with ease and gives them the ability to view the surrounding area as they eat. This allows them to see whether they have a challenge approaching, whether that be a dog, human or other animal. With animals, they always put safety first and feeling safe enhances the enjoyment of their meal, being able to relax and remain aware of their surroundings while they eat.
Domestic dogs and wild dogs are scavengers by nature. They do not place their food on plates, let alone bowls. Bowls are for human convenience and sadly cause much anxiety and discomfort to our dogs.
There is no research on how best to feed your dog, but plenty of anecdotal evidence. I began feeding my dogs off the floor over 10 years ago, having noticed that my labrador and spaniel left food that was around the edges of a bowl.
A General Guideline For Preparing Homemade Dog Food
My DIY dog food recipe is more of a general guideline, rather than an exact meal plan that I follow each week. My dogs diet changes the same way ours does, depending on what we do and what we buy or grow.
However, we almost always stay with this basic formula:
- 50 percent cooked protein
- 25 percent cooked complex carbohydrates
- Fats and supplements
Protein is always meat and usually chicken, though weve also used turkey, pork, and beef. We feed any and all parts of the animals, but most commonly, we saute chicken breasts or chicken thighs in coconut oil and ground turmeric.
Coconut oil has a host of health benefits for dogs, such as improving the skin and coat, increasing energy, aiding digestion, reducing allergic reactions, promoting wound healing, preventing yeast and fungal infections, and supporting arthritis or ligament problems.
Turmeric has long been studied for its powerful medicinal properties, including its use as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
We add it to the coconut oil since it is fat-soluble, and use it to support our pugs joint health.
Speaking of dark meat, we feed thighs and breasts interchangeably. While well remove the skin from poultry and trim off excessive fat from red meat, we dont worry about buying the leanest meat possible for our dogs.
A little fat is necessary for a well-rounded diet.
They tend to be the leftovers in our produce bin, so we never have to buy, say, a whole head of cauliflower just for the dogs.

Why Won’t My Dog Eat Food But Will Eat Treats
Chances are, your furbaby is spoiled or picky. Some dogs are skipping meals and waiting for treats because they just prefer the taste of treats.
Treats are delicious and can be a handy way to reward and praise your precious pooch. When given too liberally, however, treats can become far more appealing than actual food, causing some dogs to turn their nose up at their regular food and demand only treats.
It might also be that your pup is bored with their food or doesnt much like it. In these cases, it might be time to look at a new brand of food. Aim for the best quality you can afford, and maybe drizzle some warm water over it to release those tempting odors.

How Long Can A Dog Go Without Food
Dogs can usually go three to five days without food, however, this is not ideal. If your dog has gone two days without food, it is highly recommended you call a veterinarian if you havent already.
More important than your dog eating is their water intake. If you cant encourage your dog to eat, try to convince them to drink water .
When To Feed Your Dog
The times and frequencies you feed your dog depends on their age and health. We will now look at how often to feed a dog, as well as when to feed a dog.
Im not one to stick to a rigid routine for when I feed my dogs. The time varies between 6am and 10am for breakfast and 5pm and 8pm in the evenings.
Some days, I feed them their whole meal quota in the evening. It all depends on what suits us best that particular day. For our dogs to be adaptable, having less routine can enable us not to panic when we miss a time slot, and in turn, prevent your dogs becoming anxious too.
For those that do prefer to have set mealtimes, there is nothing wrong with this its all about personal preference and fitting it into your lifestyle.

Why Is My Dog Not Eating
There are many reasons why a dog might not want to eat. Firstly, its worth saying that loss of appetite is one of the most common signs of illness, so if your dog hasnt eaten for 24 hours, then its best to call your vet, especially if there are any other troubling signs, like diarrhea or lethargy. Remember, you can contact Small Door vets 24/7 via the app.
When Shouldnt I Feed My Sick Dog
If your dog has been vomiting or has diarrhea, then you should wait at least twelve hours after the last episode to try to feed it again. If you feed your dog too soon and its been vomiting, the food could upset the stomach again and just give it more to throw up. If vomiting or diarrhea persists for two days or more, take your dog to the vet.
