How Much Food Do I Feed My Puppy

Step : Determine Activity Level

How much food to feed your puppy? | Veterinary Approved

Its important we take activity level into the equation. How much exercise does your dog get?

Be honest here.

The vast majority of dogs today fall into an inactive activity level. Most are cooped up at home all day while their caregivers are at work. And few are lucky to get dedicated walks, play sessions and exercise every day.The reality:Many dog owners assume their dogs are more active than they truly are and in turn feed more than they need to.Use the following as a guide:

Most companion canines fall into this category. These are the dogs that spend most of their days lying around the house. They venture outside to potty or for short walks and play sessions. If you have an inactive dog, you may need to feed 2% or less to maintain a healthy weight.

A dog with an average activity level may receive anywhere from an hour to several hours of exercise a day. In this case, feeding between 2-3% of body weight is appropriate, but 2-2.5% might be more ideal.

An active dog is one that gets plenty of exercise. These dogs get out of the house more often. And they tend to exert themselves far beyond routine walks or average play sessions. Active dogs generally participate in more adventures or activities with their caregivers. This could include hiking, running, biking, hunting, and so forth. If you feel your dog is more active, than you may need to feed 2.5% or more to maintain a healthy weight.

When your new puppy arrives home it can be a stressful event for them. During the first few days, it can cause their appetite or digestion to be a little off-kilter. Try not to worry about this too much as it is perfectly normal. After they settle in their digestion and appetite should settle.

If it is excessively runny, shows signs of blood or carries on for too long you may want to consult your vet. They may have developed colitis or picked up something that requires treatment. They can prescribe medication or probiotics to assist.

Whats The Best Way To Feed My Puppy

The best way you can feed your puppy is to create a routine and stick to it. Feed them at the same times, in the same place, using the same bowl, so they understand exactly when and where mealtimes are. They dont need variety in their diet in the same way humans do, so stick to the same food each time.

When you do transition to a different food for example, when they move from being a puppy to an adult dog do it over a week or so, by mixing the new and old foods together and gradually increasing the percentage of new food.

Once youve put your puppys bowl down, theyll smell and nose the food to test its temperature. When theyve started eating make sure to keep an eye on them to ensure their safety, but dont fuss over them while theyre eating as it could cause protective, aggressive behaviour.

Leave the bowl down for 15 to 20 minutes and then remove it, even if there is food still uneaten this will help them learn they must eat when you decide. You should also feed your puppy after youve eaten or at a different time completely to demonstrate the hierarchy of the household. Always make sure there is plenty of water available, and change it regularly.

Giving your puppy scraps or leftovers can result in bad behaviour as it confuses their routine. Similarly, try and avoid offering food as a reward too frequently and do not offer treat food as a way to entice them to eat their main food its too confusing for your puppy and may result in them not eating.

How Much Should I Feed My French Bulldog Puppy? + Feeding Guide

This isnt an exact science, and there may be some trial and error involved in coming up with the amount of food your dog needs each day. Start by looking at the feeding guidelines on the dog food package, but take this information as a suggestion rather than requirement, since those guidelines may result in larger than necessary portion sizes.

Next, factor in your dogs age and lifestyle. For example, puppies and active adult dogs need more food than elderly dogs. The best way to decide if your dog is getting the right amount of food is to look at the dog, at whether he eats everything in his bowl, sometimes doesnt finish, or even skips a meal. If your dog has a visible waist, hes well proportioned, and you can feel his ribs, hes probably getting the right amount of food.

How To Know If Your Puppy Is Fat

Pet obesity is a huge problem in the UK, with studies suggesting that 56 per cent of the nations dogs are overweight or obese. Fat dogs will struggle more to enjoy life and the likelihood of them suffering from serious conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, breathing problems and cancer, is increased. These health problems wont just put a strain on your wallet as they are costly to treat, but they could cause heartache too as each tends to lead to premature death. They are also at greater risk of arthritis, which is painful for dogs. Managing your pups food intake alongside suitable exercise for their age is the best way to prevent them getting fat.

Many dog owners dont recognise that their pet is overweight, but there are simple and easy ways to check. Look straight down at your pups body from above. Your pets waist should taper in to give an hourglass shape. If they look oval from above you will need to think about cutting down on their food intake, and if the hourglass shape is too extreme they are underweight.

Gently run your hands along both sides of your dogs chest and you should be able to feel their ribs through a thin layer of fat. The ribs should not be highly visible as they would be in an emaciated dog, but neither should it be difficult to feel them through a layer of fat.
