Q: Are There Natural Remedies

Dr. Cathy: For mild ear infections, you can clean your dogs ears at home. Mix one drop of dish detergent in 16 ounces of water. Fill the ear canal, massage the mixture in, and let your dog fling his head.

To dry the ears and make a slightly acidic environment in there, mix one part of apple cider vinegar with three parts of water, and then fill the ear and let your dog fling his head.

If the infection needs a bit more than cleaning, garlic soaked in vitamin E can help because garlic is antibacterial, while vitamin E promotes healing.

Be careful about using an over-the-counter ear cleaner that may contain alcohol, which can burn your dogs ears. There are also ear cleaners available for purchase that are already made with natural ingredients.

Some ears take a bit more work but still can be treated naturally.

Olive leaf, rosemary extract, oregano oil, neem oil, and noni are all examples of herbal medications that can help treat yeast and bacterial infections.

The thing to remember is this: if the ears are bad, there is usually stuff going on with the whole skin, so treat the whole body with these herbal medications and soothe the ears as the body heals.

Commercial Food Diet Plan

Yeasty Dog? Try This DIY Yeast Diet For Dogs

Not all dog food comes packed with yeast, and there are ways to change your dogs diet plan by feeding them commercially made food. But you should make sure that it comes labeled as whole food, or Limited Ingredient Whole Food. It means that these foods come with fewer ingredients, reducing the rate of yeast growth on the dogs skin. These foods are ideal for dogs with medical conditions like allergies or, in this case, skin infections.

Preparation Of Our Homemade Diet

All of the information above might seem intimidating, but I assure you that making the actual meals for our dogs takes no more than 20 minutes of actual hands-on time.

First, we cook our complex carbs, whether theyre grains, legumes, or starchy vegetables.

While that pot is simmering on the stove, we cook the meat in a separate pan in coconut oil and ground turmeric. After its cooled a bit, we add chunks of meat to our food processor and pulse until theyre broken down into 1/2- to 1-inch pieces.

Then, we gather whatever vegetables or fruits we have in the kitchen , chop them up as needed, and toss them into the food processor.

We also add a few clean, crushed eggshells to the mix. A few pulses turns all this food into smaller pieces, making them more digestible for our dogs.

Finally, we add the cooled, cooked carbs to the food processor and do a couple more pulses to combine. Everything should have a finely crumbled texture by this point.

Since dogs have short digestive tracts, its crucial that you break down the food to increase its bioavailability that is, making all the nutrients in those wholesome ingredients more digestible in a dogs system.

I prepare enough food to last my two pugs an entire week. Its unbelievably easy, and I like knowing exactly what goes into their food. Friends will watch us feed our pugs and remark that it looks good enough for them to eat!

The Role Of Pet Foods In Yeast Infections

The environment is not the only factor influencing whether your dog develops a yeast infection his diet also plays a role.

To survive and grow, yeast needs energy in the form of glucose. This glucose comes from carbohydrates and starches.

The problem is that many low-quality foods have low-quality carbohydrates, as they are popular, cheap fillers. These fillers have minimal nutrition but have all the nutrition that yeast needs.

In other words, a low-quality diet can increase the risk of a skin infection or other types of yeast infections.

Feeding your furry friend anti-yeast dog food is a simple way to overcome this challenge. Watching what your dog eats doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

While we offer the above recipe, dog owners with less time on their hands can also find commercial options that are right for your dog’s diet.

Transitioning To Homemade Dog Food

Homemade Dog Food Recipes For Yeast

Most dogs dont have a problem making the switch to homemade food. If yours is prone to digestive issues, start slowly by mixing a little bit of the homemade food with the commercial food.

Over the course of a week or two, gradually increase the amount of homemade food while decreasing the commercial food.

If your dog vomits or has diarrhea, try introducing only a couple of new ingredients at a time until their systems are well adjusted to the fresh diet.

For dogs with health issues, please consult with a veterinarian if you arent sure what kind of supplements are needed. Use your best judgment, the way you would when feeding yourself or your family.

Homemade Dog Food Recipe For Yeast Infections

Looking to take matters into your own hands? Making your dogs food from scratch lets you make ingredient decisions that benefit their overall health.

Rather than questioning and making guesses, you can know for sure that your meals arent feeding the yeast!

This recipe is simple and contains only a handful of wholesome ingredients.

One ingredient that might come as a surprise is garlic. Garlic is primarily considered to be toxic in the dog community.

While large amounts can cause some severe health problems, its beneficial in moderation.

Garlic contains anti-fungal properties, so adding it to a homemade recipe can do wonders to keep infections at bay.

What Youll Need

  • 3 pounds of chicken thighs
  • 2 chicken bouillon cubes
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 pound of mixed frozen vegetables

When choosing the vegetable mix, make sure to select a frozen product that doesnt contain onions or anything else thats harmful to dogs.

Youre already using garlic, so you dont want to overdo things!

Making the Recipe

Start by deboning the chicken and removing the skin. You can also dice the garlic. Then, whip out your slow cooker!

This is a set it and forget it kind of recipe. Once you prepare the ingredients, you can leave the slow cooker to work its magic for several hours.

Place the chicken, garlic, and bouillon cubes into the slow cooker.

Add enough water to cover the ingredients. Set the machine on the lowest setting and let everything cook for about six hours.

Ingredients Youd Want To Avoid

Now that you know what you want in your dog foods ingredient list, here is a list of ingredients that you would like to avoid as much as possible.

  • Additives and preservatives
  • Starchy foods like rice, corn, oatmeal, potato, and sweet potato
  • Fruits with high sugar content like mangoes

It gets tricky from here since pet foods usually contain ingredients used to bind the stuff together and keep the food fresh. The key here is to look for a limited ingredientdiet filled with wholesome and natural ingredients. This way, youre confident that the food your dog is eating only contains all the good stuff.

Adding to the confusion are the heated debates on carbs being the cause of yeast infection. Youve probably heard from your vet that carbohydrates do not increase blood sugar levels.

However, the other side of the spectrum negates this. They say that yeast uses sugar or carbs as an energy source, thereby increasing the levels of blood sugar on your dogs body, which will consequently lead to yeast growth.

Both may have valid points. If youre confused, the best course of action is to try both and find out which one actually works for your dog.

Keep in mind that dogs nutritional needs vary so much that there is no one-full-proof ingredient formula that will work for ALL dogs.
