Homemade Dog Food for Upset Stomach Recipe (Easy to Digest, Bland, Low Calorie)

Keep your dog healthy and fit with this easy peasy homemade recipe its cheaper than store-bought and chockfull of fresh veggies!

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So thats what we did we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

Thats when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food just like making anything at home is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.

But its important to note that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size, such as:

  • High-quality protein
  • Fat
  • Calcium
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Now this recipe here has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies and 25% grains, but the ratios can easily be adjusted to suit your pups breed and/or needs.

When Should You Be Worried That It Is An Emergency

    • Be sure to monitor your dogs condition closely if you suspect they may have an upset stomach. Although usually an upset stomach isnt serious, in some cases, it can be a sign of an underlying issue. How do you know the difference? Heres our tips:
    • Urgent! Get your dog to your vet/emergency vet now!
    • Unable to stand
    • Bleeding from mouth, nose, or eyes
  • Comfort & observe:
  • Vomiting: Throwing up 2-3 times over a short period of time, and then being fine is pretty normal for how a dog handles digestive problems. But if your dog is vomiting 3 or more times over a period of eight hours, get your dog to the vet.
  • Also, your dog may get to the point of vomiting up a yellowy substance which means their stomach is empty and theyre just pulling up stomach acid. Thats okay and normal if it happens for a short period of time. If the vomiting doesnt stop over several hours, or your dog starts vomiting blood, call/go to your vet immediately.
  • Diarrhea: The rules on diarrhea are a lot like those for vomiting. Its not unusual for your dog, when sick, to have several episodes of diarrhea over a short period of time. Their digestive system is upset, so its their bodys way of cleaning things out.
  • Its only when diarrhea or urgent need to defecate doesnt subside or when their blood in the stool that you should take your dog to the vet immediately.

Most commercial dog foods contain fillers such as corn gluten meal or wheat gluten meal, which can cause reactions in dogs with sensitive stomachs. This situation is where homemade dog food can have an advantage over a commercial diet since you control exactly which ingredients go into your pets food bowl.

Generally, homemade dog food consists of a bland diet with a shortlist of ingredients. Typical meal components that digest well include:

    • Pumpkin chunks or puree
    • Sweet potato
    • Olive oil
    • Mild-flavored vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, green beans, peas, or spinach
    • Chicken, turkey, or lamb baby food, as long as they dont contain any garlic or onion in any form

You can also offer your pet bone broth, which works well for extra hydration if your dog isnt drinking enough water. If you are learning how to make bone broth for dogs yourself, make sure to strain the broth to remove all bones as they can get stuck in your dogs throat. Also, let the fat rise to the top and cool, then remove. Foods containing too much fat can potentially trigger pancreatitis, a painful stomach condition for your pup. For that reason, something like hamburger meat, while tasty, is not ideal.

How To Determine If Your Dog Has A Sensitive Stomach

Its not uncommon for dogs to consume seemingly innocuous objects from the park or the alley and come out unscathed. Not so much for other canines. A gurgling stomach or droopy and sleepy behavior are all possible outcomes.

Its not enjoyable for either the dogs or their owners if their dog has an accident or vomits and they have to clean up something disgusting.

Its crucial to keep track of how often you have a stomachache. There are certain dogs who are plagued with continuing, chronic sensitive stomach troubles that present regularly and seem to come and go at the most inconvenient times. Seeing a veterinarian if your dog is unwell for more than a day is a good idea.

When it comes to the health of your dogs stomach, the food he or she eats has a huge influence. Begin by lowering the number of treats you give your dog and switching to a more basic diet. Your dog may have food allergies. Identifying whats causing your dogs upset stomach can help him feel better.

You may see whether switching to a different protein and carbohydrate mix helps your dogs digestive issues by using an elimination diet. Switching to a meal with fewer components will allow you to keep an eye on your dogs progress. Excellent news if symptoms improve! You may gradually increase the number of proteins or carbohydrates you give your pet. If anything causes your dog to respond in an unfavorable way, you should retrace your steps.

    Baked Sweet Potato Dog Treats

Chicken and Rice Dog Food for Upset Stomach (Easy Homemade Recipe)

Most dogs really love sweet potatoes, and it doesnt get any easier than this recipe! Baked sweet potato treats make a nutritious snack for your pup and contain healthy fiber to treat diarrhea or constipation.

    Ingredients:

    • Whole sweet potatoes, as many as you want to cook

Wash the outer skin of the sweet potatoes, then slice them thinly but no thinner than 1/4 inch. Try using a mandolin slicer for consistent slices. If the slices are too thin, theyll get crispy, and your dog will gobble them very quickly. Thicker slices stay chewy and keep your pup busy for a while.

Once sliced, spread the pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake in the oven at 250F for 2.5 to 3 hours, turning them over halfway through the cooking time. Cook until the slices are dried out and shrunken but still slightly bendable. After cooling, store the sweet potato treats in a closed container in your refrigerator. Theyll keep for up to three weeks.
