Hills Science Diet Dry Dog Food Adult Chicken & Barley Recipe
This food has quite a bit of omega fatty acids and vitamin E in it, making it a good choice for building a bright, shiny coat. Those fatty acids are also good for boosting immune response.
Chicken is the first listed ingredient, and beyond that, the food also has chicken fat, flaxseed, and chicken meal, all of which contain essential nutrients that dogs usually cant get anywhere else. Despite having all these nutrients, this is a moderately-priced food.
Perhaps the reason why its relatively inexpensive is that it has a limited amount of protein only about 20%. Also, its filled with filler grains like wheat and corn, which can cause digestive issues and provide empty calories.

Discussion Of The Primary Ingredients
Knowing whats going into your pets food is vital, as some companies use less than stellar ingredients, so heres a look at the good and bad of Hills Science Diet dog food.
The majority of Hills Science Diet dog food recipes use real meat as the first ingredient, which means your pup is getting an excellent source of protein. Thats always a plus! However, for dogs with food sensitivities, there may be issues, as the most often occurring sensitivities are to common protein sources such as chicken. There are a handful of other options, such as turkey and lamb, to choose from, though.
And while most of Hills recipes list actual meat as the first ingredient, a few list as the first ingredient instead. This is also a good protein source for your dog, just not as excellent as real meat.
Peas & Legumes
A downside to Hills Science Diet dog food is that many recipes contain ingredients such as yellow peas, pea fiber, soybean meal, and other legumes. Why is this potentially bad? Because peas and legumes have been linked to heart disease in dogs. More research is needed into the subject to determine how large a link it is, but you should be aware of it when purchasing food for your pet.
Hills Science Diet Dog Food: Is It Right For Your Dog
If your doctor has recommended that you feed your dog Hills Science Diet due to some medical condition, then, by all means, follow their instructions. This brand is one of the best for nourishing dogs struggling with infirmities.
Its still a good food for healthy pups, and its moderately priced, but you can likely find better kibble if youre willing to pay a bit more. The protein levels are especially low and theyre full of grains, and we generally recommend packing in the meat at the expense of corn and wheat.
Still, this is a fine food, and one your dog shouldnt have any qualms about gulping down.

Overall Is Hills Science Diet Dog Food A Good Choice
Science Diet has upgraded some of their ingredients in the last few years. A meat ingredient, such as chicken meal, is now the first ingredient in most or all of their kibbles.
Hills Science Diet foods contain no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. We think there is less for critics to complain about now, especially with veterinarians and others advising a return to grains for some dogs.
Many of the foods are high in carbohydrates but, looking at the calories and fat in the foods, your dog probably wont get fat.
Hills recall problems are troubling but, overall, we do think that Hills Science Diet dog foods are good foods, especially if your dog has any specific health issues that require a special food.

Choosing The Best Dog Foods For Urinary Health: A Buyer’s Guide
If your dog has bad urinary health, he or she most likely has a urinary tract infection , kidney stones, or both. Treatment will differ based on the type of stone, but in general, your veterinarian will follow this treatment strategy for kidney stones.
Analyze the stones to determine the best course of action.
Your veterinarian may recommend surgery to remove some of the stones so that they can determine what type your dog has. This will assist your veterinarian in making educated nutrition and treatment options because certain stones have distinct demands that may contradict others.
Cure the current UTI.
Your veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics or other medications to assist your dog’s body in healing. When the irritation subsides, the stones may pass on their own.
Prescribe or recommend meals that can help battle that specific sort of stone.
This is why it is critical that at least one stone be removed and evaluated by a veterinarian. Though kidney stones can occur for a variety of causes, some are food-related and can be avoided with a healthy diet and treatment.
Kidney Stone Types and Dietary Requirements for Each
Kidney stones are classified into six types. Each one has a unique treatment and preventative technique, so it’s critical to know which one your dog has so you can provide the best care possible.
Stones of Purine
Stones made of calcium oxalate
Stones of Calcium Phosphate
Stones of Cystine
Stones of Struvite
Stones of Silica
