Common wisdom has long held that it is best to stop feeding a dog with vomiting or diarrhea for a day or two, to let their gut settle down and allow things to get back to normal. However, this approach is not generally recommended anymore for several reasons.
We now know that having food present in the gut is very important for your dogs health. Most cells in a dogs body have their energy supplied from the blood, but the cells that line the intestines get their energy directly from the food that is currently being digested.
This means that if we stop feeding our dogs for twenty-four hours, we deprive their intestines of energy. Most dogs with an upset stomach will have inflammation or damage to the intestines, which need energy to help them heal. A lack of food can actually slow the healing process and make it more likely that dogs will stay sicker for longer.
Healthy adult dogs will have good reserves of energy, and so can cope with being starved, but this is not true for other dogs.
This means that it is not recommended to starve your dog when they have an upset stomach unless your veterinarian has specifically advised you to do so.

Is Your Dog A Puppy
A young, healthy puppy shouldnt go more than a few hours without eating.
Small breed puppies, especially, are at a high risk of hypoglycemia and should be watched closely for signs of lethargy or collapse if they are not eating. If this happens, they should be treated on an emergency basis.
Some puppies may not like larger kibble, as it can be hard for their puppy teeth to chew, especially if they are just transitioning to solid food. This can be remedied by mixing in water and letting it soak to create more of a porridge consistency, or the kibble can be mixed with canned food as well.
If your puppy still will not eat, they should be seen right away by a veterinarian. If they are also lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, they should be seen on an emergency basis.
Check Your Dogs Temperature
We recommend using a rectal thermometer because it is the most accurate option . An ear thermometer is also an option but not as precise. A dogs normal body temperature is 101 to 102.5°F. A temperature above 104°F is a fever. If the temperature is higher than 104°F or lower than 99°F, you should go to the vet or emergency vet hospital immediately. A fever or drop in body temperature signals a serious illness that requires prompt veterinary treatment.

White Rice Or Brown Rice
- Rice is a typical staple for a bland diet because rice is easily digested by dogs and easy on an upset stomach. However, there is one thing that many pet parents overlook when feeding their dog white or brown rice – you must overcook the rice in order for it to be highly digestible for dogs. Rice must be a mushy consistency before being fed to dogs. It should not be fed to dogs if the rice is cooked like what we humans would eat. Be careful not to feed too much brown rice though, as too much fiber from brown rice could also cause constipation.
Transitioning Your Dog To A Different Food
In general, the best way to transition your dog to a new food is to start small. The first meal should contain approximately 80-90 percent old food and 10-20 percent new food. Bone Broth And Baby Food
