Warning: Loss Of Appetite In Dogs
A loss of appetite in your dog could be a sign of a bacterial or viral infection. Parvovirus is one such infection that causes decreased appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.
If you suspect your dog could have an underlying illness, its important to reach out to your dogs veterinarian as soon as possible.
Sick dogs often have a decreased appetite, but may accept certain human foods that they view as treats.
If your dogs eating habits are a recent or sudden change, take your dog to the veterinarian to get evaluated. Always talk to your dogs veterinarian about any changes in their diet.

Did You Switch Dog Foods
Transitioning from one dog food to another too quickly can cause stomach upset, which may mean that your dog doesnt feel like eating. Its important to transition foods gradually over 7-10 days in order to avoid stomach upset. This also allows your dog to get used to the new food over time, rather than making a sudden switch.
Schedule A Visit To The Vets Clinic
If your pup is still not eating despite switching to a different dog food brand, they may be suffering a health condition that needs to be examined by a vet.
Book an appointment with the vet at the earliest time possible to have your dog examined.
The vet will perform tests on your dog to find out if they have any illness that are causing a loss of appetite.
During the clinic visit, the vet may require you to provide a background of your dogs condition such as the number of days they have not been eating, and the observed behavioral change.

Can Puppies Eat Just Dry Food
So is it a success when your puppy eats just dry food and water? Many vets would say yes. It certainly is a big improvement on a meat-based diet.
I would say not quite. I prefer the puppies I see to eat a little fresh fruit and vegetable with their dry, and I recommend starting raw bones early under supervision. But thats just me. The big battle is already won.
But are you feeling just a little guilty that you took away the tastiest food? I perfectly understand how you feel we all love our puppies and want them to be happy always.
Perhaps my favourite thought experiment will help. Imagine your dog is now old and has the power of speech. You ask what was great about your life?. Do you really think theyd say the food? Dont sell yourself short- its you they want.
Love your puppy in every other way that you can. Just not with food choices its you who needs to do the choosing. Theyll love you back anyway!

Try Enhancing His Meal

Some dogs just dont like the taste or texture of dry food. If your dog is not eating his dry food, you may want to mix a small amount of wet food with his dry food to make it more palatable. If you do decide to add wet food to his regular meal, remember to scale back the amount of dry food to avoid over-feeding him. Other options include adding meal enhancements, which coat the dry kibble with a flavorful puree, or try creating your own personalized dry dog food blend.

She Has Tooth Pain Or Other Dental Issues
Dental problems make eating a real pain, particularly if your dog has a kibble-based diet thats crunchy.
Sadly, dental disease is common in dogs, especially in seniors and small breeds. Cracked, decayed, or loose teeth are uncomfortable and aside from causing her to refuse food they put her at risk of serious infections.
Checking your dogs mouth regularly and performing routine teeth brushing can help detect and prevent dental issues. So, if your dog isnt eating, check her mouth for signs of injury or infection and make a vet appointment if necessary.
Medical Causes For Anorexia In Dogs
Medical causes of anorexia include any condition or illness that causes a dog to not want to eat. They can include hundreds, maybe even thousands, of potential issues. The medical disorders that can cause anorexia include diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, kidneys, airway, lung or blood, and anything that can cause pain. Information about some of the most common causes include:
- Gastrointestinal Diseases â The gastrointestinal tract includes the system that takes food in, processes it, and eliminates it. This includes everything from the mouth, esophagus , the stomach, the small intestine, and finally the large intestine. A disease of any of these areas can cause a dog to not want to eat and are commonly associated with vomiting and diarrhea.
- Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract include infections of the bacterial, viral, or parasitic variety. Examples of infections are hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and viruses, such as coronavirus or parvovirus. Additional diseases of the GI tract include tumors, such as cancer, ulcerations, inflammatory diseases, food allergies, ingestion of indigestible objects that cause a âforeign bodyâ, ingestion of spoiled food or trash, or even changes in food. Diseases of the mouth, such as bad teeth or ulcerations, can also cause pain and lack of appetite.

Make Sure You Are Feeding The Right Amount
This one might seem a little obvious, but you would be amazed at just how many owners overfeed their dogs.
I can understand. I mean, when your dog stares at you with those bulgy puppy eyes, it can be hard to resist giving them an extra treat or two. It wont hurt, right?
It might be that your dog isnt fussy but just full.
Overfeeding is a particular problem if you have a small pup like a Chihuahua, Papillon or Brussels Griffon
These tiny dogs need much less food than you think. The smallest sizes might only need half a cup of kibble across a whole day.
As you can imagine, these tiny stomachs get full quick. When your belly is full to bursting, the last thing you want is more food, right?
Well, your dog feels the same. And if you present him with more food, your dog isnt going to eat it.
While you may think your dog is fussy, your dog may need more time to digest his last meal.
Speak to your vet about the amount of food your dog needs. If you are overfeeding, cut back it could cure your dogs picky eating.
Make Your Dog Work For It
I dont know about you, but I find that the rewards I work the hardest for are the most satisfying
Your dog feels the same. He will be considerably more likely to eat his food if he has to work for it.
A short session of Shake, Roll Over, or any other trick will have your dog expecting a reward for his hard work.
Its at this point you offer your fussy dog his meal. Many picky eaters get so caught up in being rewarded that they forget they would normally reject this meal.
The key here is to make your dog think his reward is a big deal. Shower your pup with praise and pats while offering him the meal.
If you can get your dog excited enough, he will believe this meal is the best thing that has ever happened to him He will eat his food without a second thought.

Is Your Dog Pregnant Or In Heat
Early in pregnancy, your dog may have a reduced or absent appetite. If your dog is in the middle or late part of her gestation, she may eat less because her stomach has less room to expand due to the presence of puppies, but she should make up for this by eating a smaller amount more frequently.
Regardless of what point of gestation your dog is in, if she has not eaten in over 24 hours, your veterinarian should be called right away to ensure that everything is okay.
Dogs in heat may also have a decreased appetite, which is considered normal. However, if she goes longer than 48 hours without eating anything, she should be checked by her veterinarian. If she is lethargic, vomiting, having diarrhea, or drinking and urinating more than usual, she should be seen by her veterinarian right away, as this could indicate an infection in the uterus known as pyometra.

Why My Dog Wont Eat His Food But Will Eat Treats

Every dog owner wants his dog to be happy and healthy. Of course, thats not always possible. Our canine buddies may exhibit unusual behavior that can be linked to health problems.
One of those uncommon behavioral patterns is hunger strike, or so called partial anorexia.
I bet none of you have encountered this before!
So, how do you react in such a situation? What should be done if your dog wont eat his food, but will eat treats instead? Is this some kind of picky eater behavior, or is Fido seriously ill?
Well, the truth is that all scenarios are possible.
Usually, dogs will have some health issues that will bother them so much that they begin to refuse meals.
Still, why do puppies choose treats instead?
I like to say that puppies have found a so-called connection between getting treats and feeling happy. Its really that simple. Once you give your dog a delicious treat, he will be thrilled, and he will want more just because it doesnt happen quite often.
As a dog owner, you will need to put your foot down and say when is enough with the treats. Proper feeding habits should be introduced to your dog.
Now, I know teaching puppies to eat healthy is simple, but teaching adult doggos is very hard. They already know what they want because they have tried other things and they already have their preferences.
If your dog wont eat his food, but will eat treats, and you find that beyond annoying, this article is just for you!

Your Dog Might Already Be Full
Another reason why your dog may be disinterested in food is that theyve already eaten. Is it possible that your dog is sneaking extra meals from somewhere, or someone, else? A quick check with your neighbours, other family members, and the rubbish bins, may explain why the delicious dinner you provide is being left untouched. The problem may even be coming from closer to home – if every member of a large family is giving them the odd treat, that could be enough to fill your dog up. While theyre unlikely to complain, its not giving them a balanced diet!
If your dog is consistently disinterested in food, it may be that they simply dont have as much of an appetite as their four-legged friends – whats normal for one dog may be too much for another.
If I Stop Giving Treats To My Dog Will Her Appetite Come Back

If your dog refuses to eat and tries to feed on the treats you give her instead, taking away the treats might be a solution.
Treats are foods that contain high levels of calories, oil, and additives and they are extra tasty to dogs. Just as a meal you eat at a restaurant is more delicious than a meal you make at home, this is also the case with treats.
Treats are not healthy foods when consumed in excess, on the contrary, they cause serious harm to your dogs health.
If you try to stop giving the treat for a while, over time she will turn to her food and her appetite is likely to come back.
