Incorporation And Growth As A Regional Power
The company was incorporated as Wal-Mart, Inc. on October 31, 1969, and changed its name to Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in 1970. The same year, the company opened a home office and first distribution center in Bentonville, Arkansas. It had 38 stores operating with 1,500 employees and sales of $44.2 million. It began trading stock as a publicly held company on October 1, 1970, and was soon listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The first stock split occurred in May 1971 at a price of $47 per share. By this time, Walmart was operating in five states: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Oklahoma it entered Tennessee in 1973 and Kentucky and Mississippi in 1974. As the company moved into Texas in 1975, there were 125 stores with 7,500 employees and total sales of $340.3 million.
In the 1980s, Walmart continued to grow rapidly, and by the company’s 25th anniversary in 1987, there were 1,198 stores with sales of $15.9 billion and 200,000 associates.
With the contribution of its superstores, the company surpassed Toys “R” Us in toy sales in 1998.

Walmart Is Making Some Changes To Its Supply Chain For Ground Beef But It’s Going To Take Some Time
Walmart announced in April 2019 that they were looking to create a dedicated end-to-end supply chain of Angus beef. While Scott Neal, senior vice president at Walmart U.S. Meat, announced in a press release that this will allow the retailer “to deliver consistent quality and value,” this system is not yet in place and it may take them some time to work out all the kinks . Jeremy Scott, an analyst at Mizuho FInancial Group, praised this “unique approach by Walmart to pursue a direct link from calf to plate” in an interview with the Reuters news agency, but warned that “it comes with plenty of risk and new variables.” Amongst these new variables seem to be the fact that the supply chain will not actually be able to cover all of Walmart’s beef needs, so some product will still need to be sourced from former supplier Tyson Foods.
Sounds like it might be a while yet before Walmart achieves its goal of farm-to-table transparency with its beef supply. In the meantime, we suggest you mooove your ground beef purchasing to a different grocer.

Whole Foods Amazon Prime Discounts Dont Yet Add Up To Much
Like most grocery stores, Whole Foods uses loss leaderswidely advertised discounts on a small number of itemsto draw customers into stores . But theres a new twist: Amazon Prime members who provide their phone numbers at checkout automatically receive further discounts . Prime members get an extra 10 percent off items already on sale at Whole Foods, plus special Prime-only discounts on a handful of other weekly special items.
While these perks sound great, we found that so far they arent worth much. Compared to most other grocery stores, Whole Foods runs very few sales and offered only five Prime-only specials. Sometimes its Prime-only deals are designed to garner a lot of attention: For Valentines Day, it hyped that Prime members could buy two dozen roses for $19.99, instead of $24.99. But because Whole Foods and Amazon offer so few of these discounts, they wont save most shoppers much money.
Amazon likely isnt done making changes at Whole Foods. Well continue to check in.
Waiting For A Rollout
Industry observers said they are not sure if, or when, Wal-Mart might decide to roll out Neighborhood Markets more aggressively.
“Obviously, Wal-Mart has struggled a bit with the format. But I’ve got to believe it’s more a matter of trying to understand how the Neighborhood Market brand complements and competes with Wal-Mart supercenters and Sam’s Clubs,” Green told SN.
“Wal-Mart has pretty much decided on the size of the stores, but it’s still tweaking what it puts into them to understand what happens when it adds or removes stockkeeping units and how that affects sales at its other formats, to understand better how each one competes with and complements the others, rather than trying to fit in with existing competition because Wal-Mart knows it can beat anyone in the market on price.”
It could be three to five years before Wal-Mart makes a big move with Neighborhood Markets, Green said, “after the last wave of fill-ins with supercenters in the central U.S. occurs,” he explained. “Wal-Mart has a strong record with supercenters, and it wants to take the time to learn more about the Neighborhood Market concept before moving forward.”
Bob Gorland, vice president for the Harrisburg, Pa., office of Matthew P. Casey & Associates, Clark, N.J. — consultants specializing in supermarket site selection and feasibility studies — said Wal-Mart is likely to continue to roll out Neighborhood Markets gradually for a few more years.

Is Walmart Neighborhood Market More Expensive
- Posted on
About a month ago our neighborhood got a Walmart Neighborhood Market, and the appeal of something closer, smaller, and perceivingly more inviting got me thinking. Is Walmart Neighborhood Market more expensive than regular Walmart?
As we made our first trip through the store on the first weekend it was open it was apparent lots of people in the community were drawn to the new store. A couple of things that stuck out about the new store were, it was half the distance to the regular Walmart. It was about 1/3 the size of a Super Walmart. It had a cozier and more homely feeling. It’s location made it easier to get in and out for grabbing a few groceries that are needed to prepare dinner. However, I had a feeling that I was paying for the convenience. Much like you pay more for gas station/convenience stores.
I thought I wasn’t the only one wondering this question, and thoughthmm, I could make this into a blog post. Because I’d bet more people think they’re paying extra too. So this last week I set out for both stores with a list of 11 items, and visited both on the same day to compare prices. Here is what I found:
- Milk : $3.98 $3.98
- Bananas: : $0.51 $0.48
- Beer : $6.28 $6.28
- Coffee : $8.48 $8.48
- Yogurt : $1.00 $1.00
- Cheese : $2.98 $2.98
- Flour : $1.58 $1.68
- Guacamole : $4.88 $4.88
- Hot Dogs : $3.48 $3.48
- Butter : $3.48 $3.48
- Cereal : $2.84 $2.84

Target Stores Charge High Prices For Produce
Overall, prices at the Target store we shopped were about four percent lower than average. But its produce prices were nine percent higher than average. In general, we found that Target stores around the U.S. that lack scales at checkout and therefore price produce per piece or package, offer undersized items relative to their price tags.

Why You Should Never Buy Ground Beef At Walmart
While Walmart may be your best one-stop shopping destination for those occasions when you’ve just got to pick up a cremation urn, a fursuit and, oh yeah, some groceries, there are still a few things you should really shop for elsewhere, and no, we’re not talking about those embarrassing products you probably purchase online anyway. No, it’s just that Walmart’s grocery line, while extensive, has a few items that are best purchased at a grocery store that actually specializes in food. Ground beef is definitely one of the top items you should not pick up on your next Wally World run.
What Food Should You Buy For Your Dog
While dogs enjoy eating meat, they aren’t strictly carnivores. They also need the nutrients provided by fruits and grains. Quality dog foods offer a good balance of all of the food groups to ensure your dog’s well-being. Just keep in mind that as dogs get older their nutritional needs change, so always buy dog food that’s appropriate for their age.
Regardless of the brand you shop, one of the biggest decisions is whether to opt for wet food or dry food. Both types of food have their benefits, and which one you choose depends on the needs of your dog:
- Wet food: Wet food is often easier to digest than dry foods, making them a good choice for older dogs, dogs with delicate stomachs, or dogs that have trouble chewing for any reason. Buying food in cans often makes it easier to get portion size right, since you don’t need to worry about weighing.
- Dry food: Purchasing large bags of dry food often represents the best value, and chewing on crunchy pieces is good for your dog’s teeth. Such foods are also less messy than wet alternatives, and you don’t need to struggle with a can opener whenever it’s feeding time.
Shopping For Dog Food By Brand
We offer an extensive selection of dog food to cater for every size and breed. If you’re shopping by brand, simply select the brand name you’re interested in to get a list of all available products. From there, it’s possible to refine your search based on filters such as dog size, age, flavor, price, and special dietary requirements. Alternatively, it’s possible to enter the product name directly into the search bar at the top of the page.
You love your dog, and you want to make sure you’re serving the best food possible. But with so many options it may be hard to know which product to buy. If in doubt, it’s worth reading the customer reviews for some honest insight. Such reviews aren’t paid endorsements, so they provide the unbiased information you need to make the right purchase.

Walmart’s Ground Beef Is Not Always The Best Deal
“But why?” You may ask, frustrated about having to make yet another stop en route to your next furry funeral-slash-barbecue. One reason is its comparatively high price. When Kiplinger did a price check on various Walmart items as compared to other retailers, they found that Walmart’s ground beef was selling for more than $1 per pound higher than that sold at discount grocer Aldi. The Kitchn did their own price comparison, this time Walmart vs. Costco, and found out that while the price of Walmart’s regular ground beef was only a few cents higher than that of Costco, Walmart’s organic ground beef cost a whole $1 per pound more.
