How To Read The Label
Reading the label of the canned or dry food is the only way to really know whether it is the best food for your dog. The FDA enforces federal regulations for information that must be printed on every pet food label. Individual states may elect to follow the guidelines established by the AAFCO, which are more specific.
Each label should include:

Not only are they dedicated to using the highest quality ingredients in each of their products, but they also take quality control and safety measures very seriously in the manufacture of those products.
In 2018, the brand voluntarily recalled two products under the Good Buddy range after one of the products were found to contain elevated levels of a naturally-occurring beef thyroid hormone. (High levels of the hormone may cause increased urination, thirst, and heart rate weight loss and restlessness.
Only those with best before dates occurring between May 19, 2017 to September 1, 2019 were affected. Since then, no other recalls have been issued.

Good Buddy Sausage Cuts Real Beef Recipe
Rating: 4.5/5 stars
All ingredients: Beef, Sweet Potatoes, Dried Cultured Skim Milk, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols
Good Buddy Sausage Cuts are bite-sized treats that are made of either beef or chicken. The Good Buddy recipes have a wood-smoked taste that dogs go wild over. All are grain-free and contain no gluten.
There are only five wholesome ingredients in this beef recipe. They are beef, sweet potatoes, dried cultured skim milk, salt, and mixed tocopherols.
Beef provides most of the flavor as well as the protein content. Theres probably a whole lot of beef included here to get the snacks protein content up to 32% because there are no other protein support that we can see aside from the milk.
Sweet potatoes are a healthy treat by itself that you can give your pet. Its even better when mixed with other wholesome food ingredients so you can get the full range of nutrition benefits.
Sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene , fiber , calcium , iron, and more.

The third ingredient is dried cultured skim milk, which is a dehydrated form of milk. Its full of protein, calcium, and vitamin D. While milk is okay for dogs, do remember that it contains lactose. So if your pet has any dairy-related sensitivity, it might be better to pass on these treats entirely.
Dont be afraid of salt. Dogs need it too for some cell functions like nerve signal transmission and fluid balance. It can also aid in digestion.

This brand is the self-described leader in organic and natural pet food and one of the only pet food companies that offers certified-organic products.
This company makes some pretty lofty claims about the quality and nutrition of their products but these claims appear to be founded in truth.

Which Types Of Cats Might Do Better With A Different Brand
The only cats better off using a different brand are those that wont eat it. Cats are notoriously picky eaters and dont like change. If your cat likes its current food, it can be hard to convince them to switch, especially if they are getting older. Most experts recommend replacing 10% of the food with the new type the first week and increasing the percentage every week until your cat adjusts. Weve found this to be effective for most cats, but there will always be a few holdouts.
If your cat has a health problem, your vet may prescribe a specific food that they need to eat. We recommend following the doctors orders and returning to Castor and Pollux when the condition subsides.
What Do Dogs Need In Their Diet
As with humans, a dogs diet is the foundation of good health. There are foods that can heal a dog, foods that harm a dog, and foods that do both. A frequent term used by veterinarians is species appropriate, which means the type of food the animal consumes in the wild. Since dogs and wolves share 99.9% of DNA, a species appropriate diet for a dog would be similar to a wolfs diet: high protein, high moisture and low carbohydrates.
Although its popular to think a dog is omnivorous and it certainly does seem like they eat anything they have not evolved from their carnivorous origins. Dogs require meat in their diet, despite the fad of feeding them just vegetables and whole grains. Their digestive system breaks down raw meat, bone, offal and fur into nutrients and then passes waste material quickly.
Were not advocating feeding bones, internal organs and fur to your dog, but the nutrients these body parts supply should be integrated in your dogs diet. Reputable dog food manufacturers strive to make foods that meet your dogs nutritional needs. There are, however, many dog food manufacturers household names, no less that plump up their product with unnamed meats, bulky grains and additives to save costs.

Castor & Pollux Organix Grain Free Dry Organic Chicken & Sweet Potato Recipe
Castor & Pollux Organix Grain-Free Organic Chicken & Sweet Potato Recipe Dry Cat Food is our favorite brand from this company. Its a dry cat food that they cook in an organically certified kitchen using all-natural organic ingredients. It has organic chicken listed as its first ingredient, and several other chicken ingredients are listed as well. It provides your cat with the essential nutrient, taurine, and contains no artificial colors or harmful preservatives.
The only thing we didnt like about this recipe is that its expensive, and a few of our cats wouldnt eat it no matter how hard we tried.

Whole Earth Farms Grain Free
Whole Earth Farms Grain-Free Adult Recipe is a canned food and has meat in its first five ingredients: chicken, chicken broth, turkey, chicken liver and whitefish. Peas, potatoes, carrots and apples round out this well-balanced dog food. Its dry matter protein is 43% and fat is 27%. This recipe blend has about the same acceptable protein-to-fat ratio as the Castor & Pollux Organix Butcher & Bushel.
Whole Earth Farms has three other blends that also have meats and fish as primary ingredients. The company also makes a variety of high-quality meat stews. These, however, have broths as their second and third ingredients and consequently dont meet all the criteria of what makes the best canned dog food.

What Kinds Of Dog Food Does Castor & Pollux Offer
You can see all of the recipes made by Castor & Pollux on their web pages.
Not all organic products are the same, depending on the percentage of organic ingredients a product contains. For example, a food could be 70-94 percent organic or 95-99 percent organic or 100 percent organic . These foods would receive different organic labeling.
All of the Castor & Pollux Organix line foods today are USDA Organic Certified made with 95 to 99 percent certified organic ingredients. That includes their kibble and wet/canned foods.
Their Organix formulas include dry, wet/canned, freeze-dried raw, meal toppers, and treats. Most recipes are grain-free but they have some which are grain-inclusive.
The Pristine formulas use some organic ingredients but not all of their ingredients are organic. The first ingredient is always meat or poultry that is responsibly raised without any antibiotics or hormones, or fish that is wild caught. Fruits and vegetables are grown without any synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides. The recipes do not contain grain, corn, soy, wheat or gluten ingredients. The recipes do not use any artificial preservatives, flavors or colors. Formulas include dry, wet/canned, freeze-dried raw, meal toppers, and treats. All formulas are grain-free.

Organix Dog Food Recipes What You Wont Find
As mentioned earlier, the ingredients used in the Castor & Pollux formulas are organic. Furthermore, these recipes are produced right here in the United States, something that I put a major emphasis on. The use of natural ingredients in the Organix recipes may be beneficial to your pet for a number of reasons
What doesnt go into dog food recipes is just as important as what does in my opinion. It should be assuring that ingredients used in these formulas are, for the most part, obtained from farms that do not use artificial or synthesized items.
The Organix recipes do not contain such things as corn, wheat, or soy which are used as fillers in many of the commercial dog foods. These type of ingredients provide little to zero nutritional value to our dogs diet, and may actually cause some harm to our four-legged companions.
