Why Science Matters In Your Dog’s Food
tags
Healthy pets lead to happy pets. If you’ve ever wondered just what is in dog food, you’re likely to pick the highest quality food for your four-legged friend, which is essential to many long, memorable years of companionship.
Just like with humans, meals that include balanced amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fats, oils, along with essential minerals and vitamins are key to a dog’s long-term health. But unlike their human owners, dogs can’t choose from an array of fruits, vegetables, meats and grains every day. Instead, dogs typically eat the same food at each meal, which is why picking a food that uses scientific research to formulate a precise balance of nutrients is important. It’s also important to realize those needs change depending on your pet’s life stage, size or special needs.

Just Dont Overfeed Small Dogs
Just because your Pug burns calories faster than a Great Dane doesnt mean hes not at risk of gaining weight. Besides, his metabolism will slow down as he gets older. So keep an eye on everything you feed your pupfrom kibble to treats to table scraps. If you are worried that your pup is overweight, you should talk with your veterinarian about switching to size-specific canned food, like Nutro grain-free roasted turkey, potato and pea stew cuts in gravy dog food, which has fewer calories per volume, says Dr. Martinez, who wrote The Dog Diet Answer Book. Another option for overweight pups, Dr. Martinez suggests is adding green beans to foodaim for about a ratio of 20% green beans to 80% kibbleto dilute the calorie count but still maintain the right amount of dog nutrition.
How Much Salt Do Dogs Need
Because all dog food contains salt, there is absolutely no need to give your dogs other foods that have any salt. You dont need to season their foods, and you shouldnt be giving them salty treats, such as potato chips and salted popcorn.
Too much salt can even cause death! As a rule, just 1.5 grams of salt per pound of body weight can kill a dog. That is a lot of salt, but it can happen if a dog happens to rip open a bag of chips and eat them, knock over a salt shaker and eat it, etc. It is a good idea to keep salt and salty treats well out of the reach of your dogs.
Yes, we do realize that not all dogs are the same, and that some are able to eat foods that others cant. But, when it comes to salt, it is best to avoid it altogether, just to be on the safe side.
Dogs only need a tiny amount in their diets, and they get all that they need from the dog food that they eat. Adult dogs require approximately 0.06 percent sodium in their diets. Growing puppies require more, about four times that amount.

Whats The Difference Between Dog Food And Cat Food
Dogs are omnivores and therefore can consume a more varied diet that includes both plant-based and animal-based ingredients.
On the other hand, cats are true carnivores, meaning they eat solely animal protein and have greater protein and fat requirements than dogs.
Additionally, cats require 11 essential amino acids to be provided by their diet, whereas dogs require 10 amino acids. The additional amino acid required by cats is taurine.
To meet these greater nutrient requirements, commercial cat foods must provide greater protein, fat, and taurine concentrations than commercial dog foods. This implies that all commercial dog food is nutritionally deficient for cats.
For dogs, however, the greater protein and fat contents of cat food make it more tasty, fragrant, and therefore enticing, and allow it to meet or even exceed a dogs nutrient requirements.

When It Comes To The Largest Breeds It Might Surprise You How Much One Dog Can Eat In A Day
If youre a dog lover and meet that special pup that melts your heart, you may decide to scoop him up without a second thought. However, what happens when that dog ends up being a doggy giant? For one thing, large dogs come with several challenges, including requiring a lot of exercise and training and costing you a lot more than you expected.
Sometimes, when you decide to get a new furry family member, you probably assume that your expenses are going to increase a little things like vet bills, grooming, and dog food are all no-brainers. The thing is, depending on what dog breed you have, your pet food bill can vary dramatically. For example, small dog breeds, like a Maltese, may only eat roughly two-thirds of a cup of food per day, and medium breeds might eat around 2 cups of food per day, but what if the dog of your dreams comes in the form of a 200-pound St. Bernard? This powerful canine requires an average of 6.5 cups of food per day. What a difference!
Your budget aside, its important to know what your dog needs, no matter what his size. The largest dogs, such as the Mastiff and Great Dane, need more food, plain and simple, but not all large dogs eat the same amount. Plus, dogs within the same breed may have different food requirements due to things like activity level, existing health conditions, metabolism, and age. Therefore, your first step is to know your pup, then decide what he needs to eat daily to perform at his optimal level.

Cost Of Small Breed Dog Food
Once you have sorted through the various dog food brands and found one that you and your vet think will best benefit your dog, you need to decide how much you are willing to spend. A good rule of thumb to follow for commercial dog food diets is to stay away from the cheapest option. Your dogs food is a vital part of his preventative healthcare, and so you want to invest in it as much as possible. When it comes to dog food, you usually get what you pay for.
On the other hand, an expensive dog food is not a guarantee of quality, either. By talking with your veterinarian and comparing brands of dog food in a variety of price ranges, you should be able to find the best dog food for small dogs that also matches your budget.
How Dog Food For Small Breeds Is Different
Small breed dogs typically require a higher caloric content to their food. Those little balls of energy need lots of fuel to burn! Dog foods formulated for small breed dogs increase the calories without increasing the amount of food in a serving. This is done by maintaining a higher fat to protein ratio in the dog food recipe. Additionally, kibble for small-sized dogs is made in sizes a small mouth can easily chew and canned wet dog food is more finely ground.
Although puppies of any breed are small, I do not recommend you feed them small breed dog food formulated for adult dogs. Rather, feed him a puppy food formulated for breed size. I gave my furry buddy Puppy Food for Large Breed Puppies until he was 18 months old. Puppy Food for large breed dogs is lower in calories per serving than other Puppy Food formulas. This allows the pup to grow at a healthy rate for supporting joints and bones. Additionally, the Large Breed Puppy Food contains the perfect amount of Calcium for controlling bone development.

Omega Fatty Acids and Healthy Fats
Omega fatty acids keep your dogs skin and coat healthy. They also boost the immune system, improve heart health and aid brain function. They help ensure proper development of the retina and visual cortex for good eyesight. Omega-3 fatty acids are also key to helping repair gut issues and maintaining good gut health.
But not all omega-3 oils are equal. Look for high-quality fish oils, including salmon oil. These are high in eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid , the components of omega fatty acids that provide the most health benefits.
The right type and amount of fat helps provide sustained energy for your small breeds high activity level. Natural chicken fat is a rich source of healthy omega fatty acids. Plus, pure chicken fat lacks the protein particles that can cause poultry protein intolerances in some dogs, so its safe for nearly every pup to consume.
Amino Acids
Probiotics
Fiber
A good fiber source is also essential for proper digestion and elimination. Sweet potato tastes great to almost all dogs even picky eaters and helps support digestive health. Pumpkins fiber content can assist with balancing a sensitive digestive tract and improves overall bowel health.

Yes Dogs Can Eat Salt In Moderation
We cant stress enough that even though dogs do need some sodium in their diets, they get all that they need from their regular dog food.
There is never any need to give them anything that contains salt, and some dogs even require low-sodium diets, particularly those with such health problems as diabetes and heart disease.
Keep your dogs healthy and happy by keeping salty treats away from them.
Purina Pro Plan Savor Small Breed Dry Dog Food
There was plenty we liked about the Purina Pro Plan Savor Small Breed Dry Dog Food, but there was also plenty that turned us off at the same time. To begin, we dont like the high price. But wed be more accepting if we felt this product earned the higher price tag by providing a higher-quality product. Thats not what we experienced.
When we first looked at the ingredients list, everything started off well. The first listed ingredient is real chicken, so we knew they used quality protein in this formula. We also knew that it had a good amount of protein at 29%, more than many other foods. There are also other nutrients like linoleic acid and vitamin A that we were happy to see.
But further down the list, we saw some ingredients that didnt please us as much. The third ingredient, right after ground rice, is poultry by-product meal. This is a cheap filler to boost the protein of a dog food, but its not the protein source wed prefer. Then, we saw the corn gluten meal. Corn isnt great for dogs and no one wants gluten in their food anymore.
We really wanted to like the Natures Recipe Small Breed Grain-Free Dry Dog Food. It had some great upsides and we thought our dogs would love it, but unfortunately, many of them didnt. Quite a few of our dogs refused to eat this food and that was our first clue that it wasnt quite what we had hoped.
