Sample buyer reviewSo I switched to this dog food on chewy as the review was right, the price was right and I did not have to haul large bags of dog food home. Auto shipment is a plus. Most important is my dogs love it. I didnt realize before researching these brands of dog food that the size of the kibble could be a health issue for the dog. Hard to find small kibble that is healthy. My dog usually has ear issues as well. None seen since starting the new kibble. Hopefully the skin issues will clear up as well!

Signs Your Dog Might Have A Food Allergy

Best Grain

Of course, any allergies should be diagnosed by a vet, but here are some signs that your canine companion could have a food allergy.

  • Rashes or other skin irritations can signify a food allergy.

  • Dogs with food allergies often suffer from diarrhea and/or vomiting.

  • Excessive flatulence can be a sign of a food allergy in dogs.

  • Since a canine food allergy can manifest itself in the form of itchy skin, look for licking, chewing, and self-biting behaviors.

  • Frequent ear infections can be caused by food allergies.

Even if your dog has a food allergy, it might not be an allergy to grains or gluten. For this reason, its important to have him properly diagnosed.

Beef and dairy are actually much more common allergens for dogs than grains are.

Best Wet Food For Puppies

Dry food isn’t the only option for puppies. Wet food is another tasty option and offers several advantages for puppies. “Wet food can help puppies transition from a liquid diet to solid food,” says Shepherd. She adds that this transition, which should begin before a puppy is fully weaned, helps puppies accept solid food and learn how to drink water.

Wet food is also easy for puppies to eat. Without sturdy adult teeth, young puppies can struggle to munch on dry kibble, making wet food’s soft and moist texture ideal. In addition, wet food is packed with flavor, providing tasty enticement for a picky or hesitant eater. However, Shepherd recommends consulting your veterinarian if your puppy’s appetite is poor as there may be an underlying condition.

When reading a label for wet puppy food, look for the AAFCO statement that says the food provides complete and balanced nutrition for growth or all life stages. Also, remember that wet food tends to cost more than kibble and needs to be refrigerated and used within a few days to prevent spoiling.

Wet food certainly has its benefits for puppies, but it’s not a necessity. “The decision to feed dry versus wet food is very individual, depending on the individual puppy’s needs and owner’s desires and resources,” says Shepherd.

Meet Their Dietary Requirements

Finding the best small breed dog food can be a bit of a task. The fact is, these petite canines require higher calories per pound, compared to their larger-sized mates, due to their higher metabolic rates and energy levels. If these needs are not properly met, they could lead to gut problems in puppyhood as well as immunity problems as they grow older.

Dogs generally require a variety of minerals, vitamins, and nutrients. They are actually considered omnivores rather than obligate carnivores. Domestic dogs can thrive on vegetables and fruits along with meaty proteins to provide a well-rounded diet.

Merrick Grain Free Real Salmon & Sweet Potato Dry Dog Food

Select editor Morgan Greenwald said she gives Merricks salmon and sweet potato kibble to her 1-year-old pit bull mix, Suzie, since she cant tolerate some other types of protein. She gobbles it down and she does great with it she has a sensitive tummy and her vet said we should avoid chicken and turkey, so I stick to salmon, Greenwald said, adding that she likes the sweet potato in the formula because its good for dogs digestion.

The experts we spoke to agree: Studies show that proteins like beef and chicken are among the most reported causes of allergies in dogs, so its important to look out for common signs of allergies like excessive itching and vomiting to figure out what works best for them, said Dr. Joe Wakshlag, professor of clinical nutrition and sports medicine and rehabilitation at Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine. However, most dogs dont usually experience these types of allergies, so you dont need to avoid chicken and turkey unless you think your dog may have an allergy or intolerance.

Feeding Requirements For Small Breeds

Best Small Breed Dog Food Grain Free

You already know by now that a small breed diet needs to be higher in calories and nutrients. You can easily check any dog food by looking at the label or company website to see how many calories and protein it has per cup.

To know your dogs daily energy requirement, you should calculate his RER , and then multiply it by several factors to get a calorie estimation.

To make it easier, heres a basic calorie calculator for dogs.

The other option would be to simply check the label of the dog food, and use the recommended feeding guidelines.

This way is more of a general suggestion, and youll certainly want to adjust it according to your dogs age, activity level, and such. It is, however, a good start.

The fact that that grain-free dog foods are highly dense means theyre also quite filling. As a result, you dont have to worry about feeding your dog more than two times a day at most.

Serving just one meal per day is fine, but it can also be too much food for him. As a result, he may not be able to finish his plate in one sitting, so make sure to experiment and see what works best.

If youre feeding your dog two meals a day, youll need to divide the feeding guideline. For example, if you have to feed your dog one cup every day, give half a cup in the morning, and another in the evening.

Now, here comes the interesting part.

Does Grain Free Dog Food Cause Heart Disease

In an announcement made by The Food and Drug Administration in 2019, it was revealed that grain free dog food poses safety concerns on dogs. Dogs who consume food labelled as grain free are more prone to heart diseases. In addition, the substitute carbohydrate components used in grain free dog food are a potential cause of heart-related issues in dogs.

Vet recommended dog food is said to initiate dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs leading to risks of a heart attack. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition leading to weakness in the heart. This condition causes enlarged heart and thinning of heart muscles resulting in heart failure and even death. However, the study fails to confirm grain free dog food behind the reported heart diseases among dogs. Therefore, it is also being assumed that there exist other contributing factors than just the grain free component which might be causing such health conditions.

Best Dry Dog Food For Puppies

5 Dog Foods for Small Dogs

If you’re wondering whether your puppy really needs a special food just for younger dogs, the answer is yes! Puppies need more calories, more fat, and a different vitamin and mineral balance to support healthy growth, Shepherd explains. Typically, puppy food is made for dogs under 1 year of age.

Though there aren’t any official AAFCO nutrient standards specifically for small and large breeds, some puppy foods are made specially for dogs of different sizes. “Balancing the nutrient needs of dogs given their wide size variety and ages is wise and common sense,” says Dodds. For instance, large breed puppies need a special ratio of calcium to phosphorus for their growing big bones, and they can benefit from supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin to help keep their joints healthy, according to Shepherd. On the flip side, puppy foods for smaller breeds often have smaller kibble pieces for smaller mouths. They may also be a bit higher in calories, since smaller breeds can have higher metabolisms.

If you want to make sure a food is appropriate for puppies, check the label for an AAFCO complete and balanced statement that says it’s intended for growth for all life stages. Some foods might also specifically state that they’re for younger dogs. Keep an eye out for any food that says “maintenance” on the package. These are meant specifically for adult dogs, so they won’t be right for a puppy.
