Reduced Risk Of Arthritis And Bone Disease

Homemade Dog Treats | Back to Basics

The crippling effects of arthritis and bone disease is astonishingly common. Some of these effects are genetic, however they are also largely due to diet.

Diets high in carbohydrate and low in essential fatty acids can lead to increased inflammation and hence worsen arthritis symptoms.

Studies on people are now finding a link between diet and the effects it has on arthritis and inflammation. They are finding that certain foods high in essential fatty acids and omega fatty acids decrease inflammation and ease suffering. Raw diets are full of these nutritional benefits. Bone disease begins with puppies and kittens.

Before an animal is fully grown their bones are soft and vulnerable to excessive force and incorrect nutrition. When puppies are grown too fast, they will begin to experience structural problems. Many kibble diets are often too high in calories and certain minerals causing rapid growth spurts and uneven growth, which can potentiall lead to joint disease such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Puppies fed a raw biologically appropriate diet tend to grow more slowly and steadily without painful growth spurts and uneven bone growth.

Be The Change You Want To See In The World

Back to Basics Foods is based on the premise that good health is achieved through eating the proper diet and staying active. We believe that our childrens meals are sacred gifts from us that should not come laden with chemical additives, flavorings, dyes or perfumes. The basic old-fashioned foods that our grandparents ate are what built this country and made our nation strong, not TV dinners and Microwave Meals. Since we are reported to be the first generation in a hundred years not to outlive our parents, we can learn something from the way they lived and nourished themselves.

The new meal requirements for the NSLP mean that changes are on the way. But dont be fooled by simple formula tweaks, there may still be many undesired and unnecessary ingredients lurking. Back to Basics Foods promises to deliver only food options that are free from the worst additives and preservatives. We will guarantee that you will never see, Bleached Flours, Chemical Dyes, Hexane Derived Proteins, Hydrogenated Oils or Trans Fats, Artificial Sweeteners, MSG, BHT, TBHQ, BHA, High Fructose Corn Syrup and the myriad other chemicals that have found their way onto our childrens trays.

Back To Basics High Protein Pork Formula Dog Food Review

Weve chosen Back To Basics High Protein Pork Formula for this review. Many dog owners arent familiar with pork as a meat protein for dogs so we were happy to see Back To Basics use it in this food.

The first five ingredients in this high protein food are: Pork Liver, Pork Meal, Pork Protein, Tapioca, and Pork Fat . As already mentioned, Back To Basics believes in using organ meat in their foods and we dont have a problem with this approach. Liver in this case pork liver, is an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Its especially good at providing vitamin A and D, as well as B and C, and trace minerals.

The food also contains pork meal. As with other meals, this means that most of the moisture and fat have already been removed from the meat, leaving a concentrated protein. This is a very good meat protein for dogs. If youre not familiar with pork in dog foods, Eagle Pack and some other dog foods use it. Pork is about 80 percent protein before the moisture and fat are removed. The protein is even more concentrated after they are removed.

The third ingredient is pork protein. This is a little vague but Back To Basics describes it as a highly concentrated source of premium boneless pork with concentrated amino acids. That still doesnt provide a lot of information.

We also note that the food has chelated minerals. Minerals are bonded to proteins so dogs can digest them more easily. Chelated minerals are often used in more expensive dog foods.

Back To Basics + Diy Dog Food

Last year, 2020 was the year I decided to make a change in my dogs food diet. We have a sweet old man name Zeus that loves to eat. Realizing that with his hungry, he always seemed to over eat because he was so unhappy with us. In result, he was super heavy, which you can imagine was horrible on his joints.

Doing a little research online and asking from experts, I started looking into seeing how difficult it was to make your own dog food. I know that there were a few main ingredients that needed to be in the meal, and I started with meat.

From this point on I went on to my list that Ive given below. I am sharing my experience from my own personal view point and want to share that if you do want to make your own dog food, its so possible. Just takes a little time and organizational planning.

Im happy to report that Zeus has lost weight and is much more mobile as well as expressive. I almost feel like he has a peep to his step and as much as he still is a bit stiff, he is much more mobile. I am glad I made the switch, I hope he lives his last years a little less pain free and much more happier.

Back To Basics Reviews

Back To Basics dog food comes in three product lines: high protein formulas, grain free recipes, and wet entrees. Most of their foods contain organ meat, in addition to the meat protein in the food. Back To Basics says, truthfully, that organ meat such as liver, provides a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Technically, liver and other organs are considered by-products so Back To Basics goes to some lengths to explain why they include organ meat and why it is good for your dog. In these foods, the organ meats are named and fully identified. You know the animal they come from and exactly which parts are used. These are not by-products in the sense that most people use the term. There is certainly nothing wrong with feeding your dog liver, heart, and giblets from healthy animals. Just ask people who feed their dogs a raw food diet.

Of course, if your dog doesnt have food sensitivities or allergies, and you dont think hes likely to develop any, then go for it. Rotate his food and feed him whatever you like. In fact, most dogs do not develop food sensitivities or food allergies. If they have problems with a particular food, its probably due to the formulation of the food, such as some kind of fiber that is hard for dogs to digest.

The Dog Food Market Is Evolving And Growing

It

“More and more veterinarians and breeders are recommending COOKED human grade food for dogs to replace traditional nutritionally lacking commercial dry and canned dog food – but there are not a lot of places to obtain it.”

Unlike cats, dogs are not strictly carnivores and require additional nutrients like humans, which they may not be getting in the proper proportions with dry dog food.

Another alternative being touted is Raw Meat but consider this unhealthy choice. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s web site does not recommend raw meat and states:

“Problems can and do occur if raw foods are fed. For example, meats should not be fed raw because of the danger of transmitting parasites and harmful bacteria .”

In addition, studies show that most dogs and cats prefer cooked meat.”

People would not eat any of the above dog foods that are commercially available, why should their dogs?

Reconsider the daily food choices you make for your pets! You cannot expect to maintain your dog’s good health, zest for food, weight and energy level on over processed, denatured, contaminated foods or table scraps. The composition of dog food is very important in order to provide a dog’s optimal health and interest in their food, especially as they grow older.

There are alternative ways of feeding your pet to make necessary healthy changes!

So what’s the solution?

THAT’S WHERE HUMAN GRADE DOGGIE CUISINE COMES IN!

Back To Basics Tubbed Dog Foodthe Bottom Line

Judging by its ingredients alone, Back to Basics tubbed dog food looks like an above-average wet product.

But ingredient quality by itself cannot tell the whole story. We still need to estimate the products meat content before determining a final rating.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 50%, a fat level of 11% and estimated carbohydrates of about 31%.

As a group, the brand features an average protein content of 50% and a mean fat level of 11%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 31% for the overall product line.

And a fat-to-protein ratio of about 22%.

Above-average protein. Below-average fat. And above carbs when compared to a typical wet dog food.

When you consider the protein-boosting effect of the pea protein and flaxseed, this still looks like the profile of a wet product containing a significant amount of meat.

Bottom line?

Back to Basics is a grain-free meat-based tubbed dog food using a significant amount of giblets, liver or poultry as its main sources of animal protein, thus earning the brand 4.5 stars.

Highly recommended.

We like this product. However, its unfortunate the company chose to include pea protein in its recipes. Without this ingredient, we would have been compelled to award this line a higher rating.

Please note certain recipes are sometimes given a higher or lower rating based upon our estimate of their total meat content and their fat-to-protein ratios.
